A Quick Guide To Lucioball

Lucioball is here for the summer games. Time to step up your game.
Overwatch's first seasonal event, The Summer Games, has finally introduced another brawl that you will play more than once without getting bored. Lucioball is essentially 3 vs 3 soccer, but with wall riding, aerial hits, and significantly less fake injuries. The brawl seems simply enough on the surface, but playing it for an hour or so reveals a significant amount of depth. There is nothing in game that tells you how to truly excel at Lucioball. This has led to a lot of new players doing poorly in their first few games, getting yelled at, and abandoning the fun entirely. It is my hopes that this guide will share some unknown information which will lead to better overall games.
The Arena
Before I dive into Lucio's kit and tips, I want to talk about the arena the game takes place in. All games of Lucioball take place in Estadio das Ras, a soccer field in the shape of a rounded rectangle. The entire stadium is walled, with each goal residing within the walls on each end. If you have ever played Rocket League this setup should be very familiar to you. The walls allow Lucio to wallride up and down the length of the field at an increased speed. These walls are a fast way to get to the other side of the field to help on defense or offense. In addition to the walls, each side of the field possesses three orange rectangles. One rectangle covers the entire length of both goals, while the other two are located on the right and left sides of the field, just behind the center line. These rectangles are jump pads and allow Lucio to jump to great heights in order to intercept the ball. Learning to use the walls and jump pads effectively are a must for any aspiring Lucioball player.

Lucio's Kit
For this brawl, Lucio has had some serious reworking to his abilities. Left-click is no longer your primary fire, instead it is Lucio's melee attack. Melee is a great way to hit the ball small distances and to pass it to a teammate without overshooting them.
Right-click acts exactly the same as it did before. Right-click has much more power behind it than melee, making it perfect for clearing the ball from your side of the field or for shooting on the opponent's goal. Right-click can still be used to knock your opponents away, just like before. Use it to knock away a would-be striker or to move the goalie away from the goal, allowing your teammates an easy shot.
In this game mode, nobody takes damage. As a result, Crossfade has been removed entirely from the game and Lucio can only use his speed boost.
Amp It Up, Lucio's E, has also received some changes. Instead of boosting the movement speed of all allies around Lucio, pressing E will only give a speed boost to the individual that pressed it. Amp It Up is especially useful when trying to beat your opponents to the ball or to quickly reposition yourself for a shot. It is extremely useful in the middle of the field which is devoid of walls and jump pads.
Lucio's ult has been completely changed for this brawl. Using Lucio's ult will pull the ball directly to whoever used it. The ult will charge slowly over the course of the game, but making saves and scoring will charge the ult meter much faster. This ult is very useful on offense and can be used to score some easy goals. However, you are likely to only get it once a game so make it count.
How to Get Good
Formation
The biggest and most important thing that I've learned is that your team needs to communicate at the beginning of the match and figure out what formation you are going to play. I personally suggest playing a 1-1-1. Having a dedicated striker and midfielder will do wonders for your team. Having one player whose sole purpose to score puts them in a great position and helps prevent overcrowding on defense. This formation will destroy all teams that have a goalie and two players that aimlessly wander after the ball. There is no offside penalty in this game, so having your striker sit behind both of the other team's attackers gives an easy 1 vs 1 with the goalie.
Use Your Left-click
Many new players will use their right-click whenever the ball gets near them. This is exactly like that kid on your youth team that would do nothing but boot the ball as hard as they could whenever the ball got to their feet. It is much easier to finesse a ball to your team mate with your melee. If your first instinct is to right-click whenever the ball is near you, you will find that the ability is always on cooldown when you really need it.
Lead Your Passes
Whenever you are passing to a teammate, put the ball in front of them. A ball to your teammates back is useless, and a pass directly to their side is just as bad. Don't worry about overshooting your teammate, they have a speed boost that they can use to run onto the ball.
Ult to Score
I have encountered two ways to score using Lucio's ult, the cheesy way and the right way. The cheesy way is really dirty, but effective. To properly cheese, you must get into the opponent's goal. From there you wait for the ball to get loose, use your right-click on the opposing goalie to knock him out of position, and then use your ult to pull the ball directly into the goal. I will warn you, using this method removes you from play and you will be yelled at by the opposing team.
The right way is just as satisfying as the cheesy way. To do it, wait for the ball to be launched past you towards the opposing goal. After that, position yourself in front of their goal, use your ult, and line up your shot. You give yourself a perfect set up for a potentially game winning goal.

These are the biggest tips I can give to anyone looking to get better at Lucioball. There are probably more tricks to learn, but those will be revealed in time. Enjoy The Summer Games and enjoy receiving the Chinese flag player icon for the third time.
