Amumu Guide: Learn How to Play One of the Strongest Champions Right Now

Rank up in League of Legends with this comprehensive Amumu guide.

If you are looking to rank up in League of Legends, or learn the jungle role with a mechanically easy champion, Amumu is a great choice right now. Over the past few patches, the sad mummy has received a series of small but significant buffs that have caused his winrates to soar to 53.84% across all ranks, increasing to above 54% in Silver and Gold games. That makes him the third highest winrate champion in the game right now, and the highest winrate jungler! While he is most effective in lower tier ranks such as Iron, Silver, and Gold, he is more than capable of being an effective jungler in the higher tier ranks. Lastly, with an average ban ratio in ranked play of just 0.59%, you are almost always guaranteed to secure him in champion select.

Hopefully, you are now convinced to give this cute little bundle of sadness a try, so here is a simple guide to get you winning games by tossing bandages and crying on your enemies!

Ability Order

The ability order for Amumu is quite simple. Take W at level 1, then level up E at level 2, followed by Q at level 3. After that, max E first, followed by W, and then Q. Meanwhile put a point in R at every available level.

Runes

Aftershock, which was buffed for tanks in the most recent patch, is a must as it now gives bonus resistances scaling off your armour and magic resistance. However, there is a lot room for customization around your preferred style in the secondary rune tree. Personally, I like to take Cheap Shot for the bonus true damage and Ultimate Hunter for the lower ultimate cooldown (this is very helpful if you teamfight a lot).

Another personal recommendation is taking Transcendence and Nullifying orb in the sorcery tree for increased cooldown reduction and magic resistance. Finally, the offense base stat selection is also a matter of personal preference and a lot of people take +10% attack speed to help with early jungle clears, but I like to integrate cooldown reduction in my runes so that I can cast as many of Amumu’s overpowered ultimates possible. Play around and see what works best for your playstyle!

Item Build Path

To start off, follow the recommended path of taking Hunter’s Talisman and Refillable Potion. Then rush Bami’s Cinder and turn that into Cinderhulk as your jungle item as soon as you can. Note that you always want to choose the Blue Smite enchantment over Red Smite, as you simply do not auto-attack enemies enough and the slow from Blue Smite can make it easier to land your Bandage Toss! After that, you will finish your core build path by buying an Abyssal Mask followed by Ninja Tabi. In the very rare event that the enemy team has little to no attack damage-based champions, you should consider buying Mercury’s Treads instead of Ninja Tabi.

After that, the last three items of the build are up to you! If you want to do more damage, you should build Liandry’s Torment and Rylai’s Crystal Sceptre. If you want to be more tanky, you should build Thornmail and Gargoyle Stoneplate. Essentially, the first three items of the build path are a must, but the last three are up to you! If you still unsure, the picture above shows a reliable item build that is good in most games.

Jungle Pathing

This image illustrates what jungle camps you want to kill in what order for your first clear. After your first clear, everything is situational, so I’m afraid you are on your own. A quick tip though is to focus on your own jungle camps over trying to steal enemy camps, while prioritizing the Raptors and Wolves camps. There are two jungle paths drawn in the image above, one for each side of the map your team may be on. Note that in the most recent patch, the highly prioritized Rift Scuttler now spawns at 3:15 instead of 2:00. This is a huge buff for Amumu in the early game, as it now allows you to clear four camps and get level 3 before fighting the other jungler for the Rift Scuttler. Previously, Amumu would have to often have to surrender the Rift Scuttler due to his weak first two levels, but now you have the option to fight for it! After you finish Rift Scuttler, or decide against killing it, consider ganking top or mid lane before recalling for your second clear.

Tips and Tricks

Finally, here are some very handy tips and tricks to help you master the mechanics and nuisances of this adorable yet deadly mummy:

- Your E cooldown reduces by 0.5 seconds every time you are auto-attacked, so when you are killing Krugs, Raptors and Wolves, just focus the big monsters and let the little ones attack you and reduce your E cooldown rapidly.

- Rift Scuttler takes increased damage when it is stunned, so hit it with your Q and then auto-attack it once and cast your E while it is stunned to kill it faster.

- Your W rapidly drains your mana, so make sure you only turn it on when you are fighting or clearing your camps and turn it off when you leave the action!

- Some champions are really hard to hit with your Q (e.g. Zed and LeBlanc), so if you’re struggling to hit enemies you can just walk close to them and press R and then hit them with your Q.

- If you don’t have R available or you don’t want to use it, use your Blue Smite to slow them and make it harder for them to dodge your Q.

- Your R (ultimate) is one of the best abilities in the game when it comes to teamfighting. Get used to its radius and try to hit as many champions with it at once.

- Additionally, try to save your Flash for teamfights where you can Flash into the team and press R for a big AOE stun!

- Your passive makes your teammates deal a percent of magic damage as true damage, so focus on getting your ability power-based teammates ahead so you can help them deal even more damage.
