The inaugaral season for the Echo Fox organization was certainly not as succesful as both players and viewers had expected. After a near playoff qualification in the 2016 Spring Split, the Echo Fox hype died as it entered the 2016 Summer Split which saw the team go 1-17. After requalifying for the LCS, Echo Fox looked to take this first season as a lesson and sought improvement. Heading into the 2017 NA LCS Spring Split, Echo Fox released 3 of its starting players in hopes to improve on their disastrous season. We sit down with former Echo Fox Support, Big, to decipher exactly what went wrong internally with Echo Fox and his plans for the future of League of Legends.
What have you been up to since the last time we saw you in the NA LCS Summer Split?
Big: well lately ive been playing other games to take a break from league and looking for other team offers.
How has the break from League of Legends been for you? Do you feel it has been too long or it was all needed after this season?
Big: The break was definitely too long, once we survived relegations there was nothing to practice for which made me more eager to do better.
In spring split, Echo Fox ended the split in 7th place but in the summer split, the results did not pan out like many were expecting. Could you provide us with some insight as to what changed in the summer split?
Big: It came down to being motivated to practice and improving. We weren't picking up certain champions or learning from our mistakes in scrims. It would just be the same problems every week and the huge losing streak didn't help with our morale.
So how beneficial would you say that the Korean Bootcamp was then? What is your personal opinion on NA teams bootcamping in Korea
Big: When we went to bootcamp it wasn't that productive for us. We didn't play enough and whenever we played we didn't learn that much. I think if given the right mindset, going to korea could be very productive. The practice is way better in terms of soloq and scrim environment.
You often highlight the lack of productive practice. Compared to other teams in LCS or maybe even compared to your days in challenger, how much less were you guys practicing?
Big: I don't mean it in terms of time, I mean it in terms of being productive. We would practice the same as other teams. We just wouldn't learn anything from the scrims we played.
Over the course of the Summer Split, you guys changed Head Coaches from Cop to Heaventime. In your eyes, how do you feel the team dynamic and growth of the team changed with Heaventime?
Big: The team dynamic didn't change at all. Its hard to say for the growth of the team since we had issues before he joined.
In Echo Fox, you guys were given a lot of resources like a gaming office but it feels like there was a lack of constructive coaching. How do you feel the new roster of Echo Fox would perform given the same resources as you? Does a World Champion to the line-up completely bring the team up in standings?
Big: I'm sure the team is able to make playoffs with the current roster. Being able to have a world champion in your team helps tremendously. He already knows how the game should be played and is able to adapt to what the team needs.
While your time with Echo Fox was not as successful as you might have liked it to be, you were able to play a full season of LCS. How was this Season of League of Legends to you personally?
Big: It was a fun experience, I never thought that I would play on the same team with Froggen. Even though we didn't do well I've met great people out of it and I'm excited to make my way back.
How will you use the experience you had with Echo Fox to further grow and improve as both a shot caller and player?
Big: I definitely learned to be aware of the team morale more. Its so important especially after losing time and time again. I think for me personally I've learned to take the initiative more.
Do you have any final words to your fans? Maybe provide us with a little teaser for what is next for Big?
Big: Thanks for supporting me. You'll be seeing me real soon.
