How to Defend the B Bombsite in Dust2

Improve your odds of succeeding in defending the most iconic bombsite in Counter-Strike.

The B bombsite of Dust2 is without any doubt one of the most iconic places in first-person shooter history. You might know its corners better than you know the corners of your own house, but do you know how to correctly and effectively defend it against the Terrorists that will do everything possible to get in and bomb it? In the next few paragraphs I will give you some tips on how to defend this piece of history, talk about some common positions to defend it, and discuss common attack strategies that you need to be prepared for. We will start by talking about the different access points to the bombsite, which could very well be the first point of contact you will have with the Terrorists. Let us start then.

The B bombsite has three access points, but those only span across two different directions. Players can reach it from Tunnels and from Middle. While Tunnels are the most straightforward way for B to be attacked, you should also be aware of Middle as it has two entrances – Door and Window. These access points make for very precise timings on the start of each round. With the best spawn on each side, a player should expect to meet the first opponent right at the end of the tunnel (from a Terrorist perspective). Given the high possibility of encounters, it is normal for both teams to throw utility to avoid rushes. While a Terrorist team is more likely to throw a Flashbang and a Smoke Grenade (to create cover from someone that might be defending on Car or Door), the Counter-Terrorists should prioritize a Flashbang and an Incendiary Grenade. The order of the utility thrown depends on how the CTs are setting up to defend B.

Before telling you the best setups to defend, we need to talk about the most common attack strategies you will encounter during your Dust2 matches. Like I wrote before, Terrorists can attack from Middle, from Tunnels, or both at the same time. First let’s analyse what could happen in a fast round:

- Terrorists can simply rush B, without any care, trying to catch the CTs out of position. Always expect at least a Flashbang that will go off as soon as it comes out of Tunnels, giving you no time to react to it;

- They might rush Middle to B. Most of the time, a Smoke will be thrown to cover CT Spawn while they push up the hill to B Doors and Window. Expect several enemies at the same time from both entrances.

- They coordinate a split rush to B. The most common tactic here is for two Terrorists to stay in Tunnel and wait for the other three to get Middle control and then they will push at the same time from both sides. This is the hardest push to defend.

On a slow round, all the approaches follow the same pattern as the fast ones, except there will be delays, utility wasted from both teams, and possibly fakes to force player rotations. Remember that while rotating, Terrorists in Tunnels can and will hear your steps in Middle. But you can also use that to your advantage, faking a rotation.

Now we’re going to focus on the main topic of this guide: Defending B! There are some common positions that CTs usually adopt:

- 2 players on B with 1 in Middle, which gives you a strong B presence with fast backup;

- 2 players in B, with one watching Tunnel and the other watching Middle, leaving the Terrorists Middle uncovered, which gives you a weak presence in Middle;

- 1 player in B and 1 in Middle, with a backup ready in CT or A.

These are just the most common and concise ways of defending B. You might have other strategies that can also work as well or even better than these. Remember that Counter-Strike is a game where no single round is the same and there are a lot of variables – it is up to you to read them the best way possible and act accordingly.

Now I’m going to tell you what is, in my opinion, the best way to defend against each type of push that I covered before:

- You should always throw precautionary utility to Tunnels as soon as you enter the site. If you’re defending B with another player, one player throws a Flashbang while the other makes use of an Incendiary Grenade at the entrance of Tunnels. If they’re rushing, they will surely be delayed if not stopped. And if you’re lucky, the Flashbang will disorientate them enough to make them burn in the Incendiary without noticing until it is way too late. In the event you’re defending alone, you should prioritise the Flashbang, followed by the Incendiary. When you're alone, you should give it a few seconds before getting on the site to avoid being caught without cover against more than one enemy. Throw the utility and stay in Door/Window until you know that you’re safe to enter. If they rush you can always kill one and hide outside of B. Yes, you will give up control of site, but you end up with one more player for the retake.

- In the event they push Middle to B, you have two options – either you challenge them when they cross Doors and Window, using both choke points to your advantage as no more than one enemy can enter at a time, or you can try to back up to Tunnels, creating the opportunity to retake with the players from A. It's important to note that if you try to challenge them as they enter, you should expect to have someone surprising you from Tunnels, making this strategy riskier, while also being one that can easily be rewarding because of possibility of easy kills.

- Or maybe they will do a split to B. This strategy is the hardest to defend against, but there is a tip I will share with you that makes you probability of winning go up a lot while also being useful for pretty much every map where the opponents are able come from different directions at the same time. Quickly throw a Flashbang to one of the entrances and push it. Most of the time you will catch opponents who were readying up to push at the same time of their teammates off-guard. Doing this will make it so you won’t be caught with your back turned to an opponent while improving your chances to win a round. If you’re able to kill the players in the area you just pushed, you've just improved the odds of winning the round for your team by a lot. At the same time, you won’t need to worry about dying from behind because you know that the remaining players are now on the site you just left. Be careful though, there may still be a Lurker somewhere.

Perfection comes from practice. While most of these tips are pretty straightforward, there will be times where things simply won’t go your way. It is normal. Even when you know all the tricks there is to know in one map there will always be players that are able to surprise you from time to time. Take that opportunity to learn with your mistakes and their proficiency.

Always strive to improve the communication with your teammates. Some of the tips I just gave you require fast coordinated actions, making good communication essential! Even if your teammate is not communicating with you, never stop giving them information and they may still be listening.

Since there are still no demos from professional matches in the new Dust2, there is no way for people to learn from the top tier of the community. But that is just one more reason for you to spend some time on the map earning new tricks – you might end up creating what could be the future meta.

Load up your guns and get ready to defend B against those classic rushes!
