The connector on Overpass is notorious for being quite troublesome. Without any predefined strategies and positions in mind you'll get overrun with ease. This article will shed a light on some known and less known spots to make your task as painless as possible.
Aggressive Hold
There are several ways to hold connector and first we’ll address the aggressive approach. If you have a decent spawn and rush through either toilets or lower park / A-short you'll be in connector second(s) before the enemy is. This will give you a great advantage. If you position yourself at the bottom of the stairs with half of your body peeking out, you have a clear line of sight towards the ladder from which terrorists will emerge. Especially with an AWP this is an excellent position to get an easy frag at the start of the round. This position is strong with any weapon, but obviously it comes with a warning. It’s exceedingly simple to be overrun in this position if you don’t have a teammate covering for you. As always, there’s nothing cowardly about retreating. Trading kills always favours the Terrorists since CT’s have to spread thin to protect both bombsites.
Another hugely risky tactic in connector is to be boosted on the stairs as seen above. Have your buddy stand halfway on the stairs so you can easily jump on top of him. In doing so you have a clear view of terrorists pushing pipe to construction. Your enemies are not likely going to look at you since it’s such an odd place to be standing. Obviously this tactic is high risk, high reward. If the enemies decide to push lower tunnels instead, you’re pretty much cannon fodder. Your buddy should be keeping an eye on lower tunnels at all times and to further your chances it is deemed wise to deploy a smoke to cloud the view of connector from the tunnels.
Defensive Hold
The next approach can be considered both aggressive and defensive. When you enter connector from A-short and run down the stairs you can do a minor strafe jump from the coils on the floor onto the pipe above you. As soon as you land you can do a crouch top all the way onto the pipe and crouch walk to the corner. Your enemies will never expect this and, when executed swiftly, this position will grant you some easy kills on the unsuspecting opposition. The biggest downside is obviously visibility: you’re completely in the open and when you fail the strafe jump you will fall directly in lower tunnels with no cover whatsoever. Always smoke off lower tunnels before attempting this jump and to improve your chances of hitting the jump consistently, practising this manoeuvre is critical.
A safer position would be shoulder peeking behind the stairs leading up to A-short. You’re barely visible from the advancing enemies and on top of that, they have to clear a lot of angles before engaging in a gunfight. This spot is even better when you have a teammate baiting the enemies from on top of the stairs. They’ll be directing all of their attention to the most visible threat while you have an easy time disposing the advancing T’s.
Another position is on top of the shelves near A-short. This spot is great for force-buys and eco rounds since you’re utilising a strange angle and you have the high ground. Terrorists pushing up the stairs will not likely prefire or check this position since it’s uncommon for a CT to be there. Shelves is also suitable for holding balloons from connector. The advancing terrorists are trained to engage the counter-terrorists at the top of the stairs. You’re situated in the back which makes you harder to spot. The jump is quite easy to land consistently. All you need is a little strafe when running on the lower end of the stairs.
Last reminder
Before you go to town with these different ways to hold connector you must get an overall feel for the map, the layout and the different routes the terrorists can use to get to the bombsites. A lot of strategies for the attacking side aren’t based on taking connector at all. When the terrorists opt to go to the A-bombsite they can skip this location altogether. When they do a long-push towards the A-site they won’t even be visible from connector and they can sneak past you unseen. Likewise, they can split from A-long into toilets and this way they’re barely visible from connector. Terrorists can do a B-bombsite push without coming through or being visible from connector. As is always the case in Counter-Strike: Global Offensive playing the map of your choice over and over again will give you a natural feel for the map. This will assist you greatly in expecting certain enemy movements and will help you improve as a Counter-Terrorist.
