We look over the best eco-rounds of DH Malmö group stages and help improve your Low-Cost fragging.
Everyone knows that every round counts. Whether you're 10 ahead or 5 behind, one round could turn the game. Before we start, let me clear some things up for those of you a little newer. Ecos are not force buys. A team ecos when they have more than ~$2700. They buy what they can to stay above $2700 so that they can still full-buy next round. Now that that's cleared up, let's jump into it!
Spoiler Precursor: If you have not yet watched the Dreamhack Malmö Group Stages and you plan to, steer clear of the videos.
#1: Don't Be Afraid to Get Aggressive
Our first example is Round 9 between Tyloo and Team-Liquid on Cobblestone. This is a perfect example of working with what you have. In the round before, Fancy managed to save his AK and armor. The rest of the team bought almost nothing to keep their cash high enough.
<iframe style="display: block; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/ECTNZJMMcp8?rel=0&showinfo=0&start=812&end=856" width="540" height="360" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen="allowfullscreen"></iframe>
They stack B-Site with the 4 pistols and leave Fancy on his own with the equipment. Fancy knows he can't survive a full site push so he gets aggressive. He holds close up and gets the first kill. Meanwhile, his teammates have neither seen nor heard any of Liquid at the B-Site, so they begin to rotate. They know that with such little equipment, they need numbers to get any frags. They bunch up and hold Liquid off so that they can get trade kills and wait for Somebody to flank behind. Once Liquid push onto the site, Tyloo peek together and get the trades.
The biggest point to take from this is that Eco-Rounds are coin-flips. If you play them right, you still may lose them. It's always going to be an uphill battle, but that leads us into our first takeaway point: #1: Don't Be Afraid to Get Aggressive. The point of an Eco is to get a few kills to hurt the enemy economy. You know you'll be able to buy up next round, so don't be afraid to push and take chances.
#2: Play Close.
Our next example didn't work as well, but it's still a great example. It's Round 23 between EnvyUs and Faze on Cache. Envy decides to buy pistols and a flash in an attempt to get a hold on Faze's economy.
<iframe style="display: block; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/4xN6c3o9ccY?rel=0&showinfo=0&start=2347&end=2410" width="540" height="304" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen="allowfullscreen"></iframe>
Now I know what you're thinking. "They only got so far because Kio had no armor", and that is a reason. The difference between this example and the previous is the equipment. Last example was all about using what you have. This example is about getting what you need.
The first thing everyone did was to take close positions. Pistols in CS:GO are tremendously powerful, especially in close range. Of course, anyone that's ever played knows this. Both teams, T side especially, can benefit from taking close positions with these pistols and getting the jump on the enemy. You spawn with nothing, you buy pistols, you steal rifles, you win rounds (or not). #2: Play Close.
#3: Form a Travelling Wall.
This next one is more of a force buy, but it really drives home one of the most important points.
<iframe style="display: block; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/XGJL7TuJUdg?rel=0&showinfo=0&start=87&end=180" width="540" height="304" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen="allowfullscreen"></iframe>
Always Stick Together. During gun rounds, trade kills are very important, right? You stick with your buddy to ensure that no matter what, you won't be at a man disadvantage. So why wouldn't you do this on Eco-Rounds, when your primary objective is to get as many kills with the least investment? As we've already seen, pistols are very strong. That doesn't mean you can run up cat and take site all on your own (unless you're Fnatic). You need to bunch up and trade together. You might lose a few in the process, but you'll always get more kills and more bomb plants than if you had run out on your own. In the example, though they lose Cutler, they trade it out and keep the man advantage. #3: Form a Travelling Wall.
#4: Remember Your Disadvantages.
Moving onto what might be the most important example of all these, we see Round 22 between EnvyUs and Faze. Faze is forced onto an eco at a very crucial point.
<iframe style="display: block; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;" src="http://oddshot.tv/shot/dreamhackcs-20160413141321140/embed" width="540" height="304" frameborder="0"></iframe>
They buy a couple smokes to allow them to get close, and they push up. They get very agressive and force their way into the site. Even though they lose a couple, they trade it out because they moved together. Fairly quickly they lose most of the team. Kio is left and instead of going for a massive spraydown or trying to plant, he uses what he has and wins the round quite impressively. What Kio knew is that this is not a gun round. He did not have any utility left or any armor to sustain a long fight. He took tap shots and never let himself get exposed enough to get aim-punched to a loss. You need to mentally recognize that no matter what, this is not a gun round, it's not a pistol round. Eco rounds are a beast of their own, and you have to treat them that way. #4: Remember your disadvantages.
#5: Never Spend Too Much
So to wrap this up, remember that all of these rules are very situational. How you play an Eco-Round is will always vary depending on your team's economy, the round situation, your loss bonus, all of it. The main thing you can do is keep yourself conscious during your Eco-Rounds and get used to them. Learn the signs for different eco strategies and go with them. But remember: #5: Never Spend Too Much
