Reviewing The Pre-Season Changes: Item reworks

Take a look at what pre-season changes will do to your favourite items!

Every season brings something new to the League of Legends community, and Season 6 will be no different. Riot is changing and reworking a lot of already existing items, while adding a quite a bit of new ones. Also, don't forget that you will be starting with 500 gold, and not 475!

Please, note that some of the changes are major and will not be shown in this article.

So, let's take a look at reworked items and compare them with what they've been before:

Aside from a new icon, which looks great, Last Whisper will now be a lot cheaper, offer less attack damage (+25 attack damage in total), and ignore 30% of a target's bonus armor. This means Last Whisper will no longer be a core item for AD carries. If your enemies don't build armor but rather magic resist or something else, Last Whisper should not be an item for you to buy. The +25 attack damage it now offers can compensate through other, better items, and is not a reason to buy Last Whisper anymore. It is important to remember that Last Whisper ignored 35% of the target's armor before, and now ignores only 30% of targets bonus armor. However, if you have a tanky opponent, Last Whisper is still a good buy to go!

Youmuu's Ghostblade is going to be more expensive due to an increase in +35 attack damage. Ghostblade won't have its 10% critical strike chance anymore, which is actually perfectly fine. It is an early to mid game item, and flat attack damage can be much more useful than critical strike chance in earlier points of the game.

One more item that goes higher in cost is The Black Cleaver. The price goes up, some stats go down; Black Cleaver now ofers 100 health less than before, but also offers new +15 bonus attack damage. The passive stays untouched. Since Black Cleaver is mostly picked by champions like Darius or Riven, this is also a good change. Extra attack damage will make lane phase easier (farming, 1v1 fights) and yet you will still get a decent amount of health from it.

An awesome change is coming for Ionian Boots of Lucidity! Although the cooldown has been reduced from 15% to 10%, these boots have a great new passive - they now reduce the cooldown of Summoner Spells by 10%! That means your flash cooldown will be 30 seconds shorter. Now, just remember how many times you wished your flash (or any other Summoner Spell) came up earlier!

Hextech Gunblade is getting a change but we're not so sure if it's good or bad. With 10% life steal gone, Gunblade will now heal you for 15% of the dealt damage (33% as effective for AOE), and had its passive which reduces cooldown removed.

Now, here comes the good news for Junglers! Hunter's Machete will cost 50 gold less, which is a nice bit of extra money you get to spent on the beginning of the game. Also, Machete is now giving our fellow Junglers 8% life steal and +15 bonus experience versus monsters (no more extra gold). This will make early jungling faster and easier, and while dealing 20 bonus flat damage on hit versus monsters you now gain from Machete will help low-level players who still don't have runes learn how to jungle.

An item we were not so sure about when it came out, and that has been used almost only by Ezreal players, is finally getting some great stats. Essence Reaver will maybe cost you some extra gold and give 15 less attack damage, but it will now give you +20% of critical strike chance. Also, you will now be able to gain up to an extra +20% cooldown reduction equal to your critical strike chance from other items and/or runes. With mana restoring still here, Essence Reaver just might become a core item for AD Carries in Season 6, because who doesn't like to crit AND gain cooldown reduction at the same time?

Maw of Malmortius now brings us extra 10 magic resist (50 in total) and +10 armor penetration, but will do less damage. The shield it gives you has been untouched, but the new second passive (Lifeline) will now trigger with the shield – whenever Lifeline triggers, you will gain 25% attack speed, 10% spell vamp, and 10% life steal until out of combat. This could make Maw an extremely good item for AD champions although the damage has been reduced. With the new Lifeline trigger and armor penetration Maw is becoming a really strong item with both defence and offence.

An item that has almost been forgotten, Mercurial Scimitar, is also bringing us some great, new buffs. Attack damage has been reduced by only 5, magic resist has been left untouched and it brings us 10% life steal; Mercurial is becoming a powerful item for every AD playing against ability power champions. Whether it is an enemy Sona constantly poking you or a fed enemy midlaner, Mercurial is a great option to buy - lifesteal, magic resist and damage, what more could you wish for?

I guess critical strike chance is what Season 6 is going to be all about. Hence, Runaan's Hurricane will now give you +30% of critical strike chance and +5% of movement speed for the same amount of gold. Although the attack speed has been reduced, Hurricane's bolts will now also be able to critically strike. Hurricane may not be an item you will buy to gain a lot attack speed anymore, but critically striking bolts are a great thing, and I must admit, it's kind of fair. Kalista players with attack speed from Hurricane only brought us nightmares. So, this season, critting all the way!

Phantom Dancer is bringing us nerfs in both attack speed and movement speed, but compensates it throught its two new passives. While in 500 units of an enemy champion you can see, Phantom will give you +12% movement speed and you will still be able to move through units. Never mind the movement speed you lost without its passive because Phantom Dancer is bringing a new dimension to chasing. With it, we won't be so angry about the enemy champion escaping with 15 HP, because he/she won't be able to escape! The other great thing about Phantom Dancer is the second passive, which will make you safe from the last champion hit - it will do 12% less damage to you. It won't be easy to decide between new Statikk Shiv and new Phantom Dancer now, will it?

Going further with buffs for critical strike chance, the new version of Statikk Shiv will give you +35 attack speed and +30% critical strike chance. Although the movement speed got reduced by 1%, Statikk Shiv's passive can now hit five targets and has range from 50 to 150 bonus magic damage (based on the level). Since the semi-recent changes to Statikk Shiv and Phantom Dancer, Statikk Shiv had nothing compared to Phantom. With more attack speed and higher chance of critical strike, Statikk will become a very important item for AD Carries. With the crazy pushing power we now get with new Statikk's passive, unstoppable crit Yasuo might be also coming back.

Last but not the least, the League of Legends all-time favourite item, Trinity Force, is also getting a quite huge rework. Since Sheen might not be giving AP anymore (which is not official yet), Trinity Force will not give you ability power anymore, and you will also lose some attack damage and attack speed. However, Trinity Force is getting some critical strike chance (who would have thought?). So, with +10% critical strike chance, 15 more mana and 10% cooldown reduction, Trinity Force might still be the item that dishes tons of damage.

Those are the bigger item changes that Riot has in mind for the new season. It seems like a lot to adapt to, but no worries, I’m sure the items will suit you all really well.
