A look into split-pushing and how to properly execute a split-push
With split-pushing becoming a bigger part of the game every season, it becomes important that players understand when and how to split-push along with if their champion should split-push in the first place. While a poorly executed split-push can be devastating for your team, a properly executed one can easily win the game for your team. Because of this split-pushing becomes a very important aspect of the game to understand how to execute properly. Through this article, all of this should become very clear and you’ll have an easier time split-pushing at the right moment and properly as well.
Who should split-push?
Usually the champion that is tasked with split pushing is the top laner as they can still join a team fight if needed with Teleport. But now that mid laners are also starting to take Teleport or Ghost on certain champions, we’re starting to see some mid laners with decent mobility and great wave clear like Azir and Vladimir split-push as well since they’re also easily able to join in to a team fight. Along with champions with Teleport, we see some ADCs with a powerful wave clears and objective taking abilities such as Tristana and Kalista split push as well. When you have multiple champions on your team that are capable of split-pushing, you should allow the champion with the best dueling capabilities to split-push. This usually makes the top laner your main source of split-pushing, simply due to the fact that they’re usually good in a duel against an enemy and they usually have Teleport ready to help the team when needed.
When to split-push and when you shouldn’t
There’s a few aspects you should consider during the game to determine whether you should attempt to split-push. First, you should consider the team compositions. For example, if their team composition doesn’t have a huge amount of wave clearing abilities, it would be a good idea to split-push as the enemy team would have a hard time reacting to the split-push. Aside from that, some other aspects you must consider are the general power of the teams throughout the game. For example, if your team has a mid game power spike, you should abuse that time window to split-push. Finally, one last aspect you should think about before you begin split-pushing is the matchup with the enemy that will most likely sent to deal with you. This is usually the enemy in the same role as you (top laner is sent to deal with the top laner and so on). If the enemy is either ahead, or is just able to out duel you in general, you should avoid split-pushing as you’ll most likely die and put your team at a disadvantage.
Proper setup
When you want to split-push, proper setup is needed to ensure you don’t get picked off due to bad map positioning. You should ensure that your team is pushing another lane and applying pressure there at the same time. Along with that it’s usually a good idea to ensure you have a ward ready to be used as you push farther into enemy’s side of the map, as you become susceptible to ganks when you begin to split-push. With proper setup, the enemy will find that it’s hard to deal with the pressure from the split-push as sending more than one champion to deal with you will cause a greater loss elsewhere as the enemy will be put at a disadvantage. Along with this, properly setting up your attempt to split-push will enable your team to play around it as well, which allows for better overall map movement from the whole team.
Knowing when to stop
When you’re split-pushing, having map awareness is still very important, as your team will be attempting to take other objectives. You must be constantly aware of when you should leave the lane and go assist your team (usually through a teleport flank). Along with that you should be constantly aware of enemy champions rotations as you’re able to be easily ganked. As long as you’re constantly aware of the map, you should be able to split-push safely and apply pressure on the map, while being a nuisance to deal with as you’re able to back off as they attempt to gank you or even bait your life to start a team fight in your favor.
Conclusion
At the end of this, you should now be able to execute a split-push properly. With your mastery of this huge aspect of the game, you’ll be able to apply pressure around the map, which will then allow your team to take objectives freely. With this skill in your arsenal, you’re able to slowly but surely win the entire game for your team. So take this important skill out onto the rift and climb the ranks with your perfect movement through the map as you split-push your way to victory.
