Examining Belt of Frenzy

A look at the Belt of Frenzy relic in Smite.

Belt of Frenzy item increases the damage of the user’s team by a tremendous amount and it has recently been reintroduced to Smite. The Frenzy effect has had niche uses in the past, but this iteration has already seen competitive play. This article will examine the history and applications of Belt of Frenzy.

Belt of Frenzy is a relic that grants all teammates within 70 units a substantial damage boost. It grants 10% additional damage and 15% attack speed for 5 seconds. In addition, the relic also grants an additional 10% damage dealt to objectives for the duration. Belt of Frenzy has a 120 second cooldown. Upgrading the relic increases the duration of the effect from 5 seconds to 8 and grants allies 10 penetration for even more effective damage.

Frenzy was initially introduced to Smite as the Active item Girdle of Might that granted one's team additional damage in one way or another, depending on the iteration and form that the effect took. In Season 3, Active items were reworked to Relics and Girdle of Might was renamed to Frenzy. In the patch that introduced Season 4, the Frenzy Relic was removed and replaced with Frenzied Ritual. Rituals were consumable items that cost 750 gold and unlocked at level 10. Frenzied Ritual was very strong and teams would often carry multiple copies for late game fights. Rituals as a whole were too strong and removed in patch 4.5. Because of its history in the game and reputation as the most fun Ritual, Frenzy was rebirthed in 4.7 as the Belt of Frenzy Relic, where it exists in its current state.

Right now, Belt of Frenzy is built primarily on supports in places where Mediation Cloak or Magic Shell have been earlier in the season. This is because both of the alternative team-wide relics have been nerfed. Magic Shell is not very good at its base rank and was replaced as the standard starting Relic by Meditation Cloak a while ago. Meditation Cloak was then nerfed in 4.7, the same patch that Belt of Frenzy was introduced. In general, supports are not going to buy selfish defensive relics early and Belt of Frenzy is the strongest team fight relic remaining. Another factor promoting Belt of Frenzy is the meta promoting early aggression, which leads to Belt of Frenzy and Sundering Spear being highly sought-after Relics. Belt of Frenzy is very strong, but it is not the end all be all Relic choice and options such as Sunder and teamfight Relics are still usable by supports in the first Relic slot.

The in-game text of Belt of Frenzy

Let’s take a closer look at what Belt of Frenzy provides to a team. The 70 unit radius of the item is twice that of Relics such as Magic Shell and Phantom Veil. This means that the Frenzy effect covers a very wide area and your team can be more spread out when you use it. The larger radius allows reaction activations of Belt of Frenzy to be potentially more useful than sudden Shell uses because it could hit more allies and provide a larger benefit to your team.

The most important part of Belt of Frenzy is the damage amplification it provides. A 10% bonus to damage dealt is huge and can be the difference in a fight. On top of the base damage amplification, this Relic also provides 15% attack speed. The increased attack speed obviously benefits some characters more than others but still increases the overall damage of the team by a large amount. In addition, the upgraded version of Belt of Frenzy provides 10 penetration to allies affected by the buff. Penetration is one of the most important damage stats in Smite and 10 is still enough penetration to grant your team quite a bit of damage against squishy and tanky targets. All these benefits combine for a massive damage boost for your entire team for the 8 second duration. Lastly, Belt of Frenzy grants 10% bonus damage to objectives. This stacks with all the other bonuses for very quick objective taking. Belt of Frenzy has several applications. As a team-wide relic, Frenzy is great in teamfights. It is also useful when taking objectives. Belt of Frenzy also has a couple of more niche uses.

Belt of Frenzy is a strong Relic during teamfights. Using it boosts your team’s damage by an incredible amount as we just covered. If unchecked, your team is just stronger than the enemy team for the 5 to 8 seconds Belt of Frenzy is active. There are a couple of times to active Belt of Frenzy in a team fight. The most obvious use is when a fight starts. For either the initiating or defending team, activating Frenzy will increase the team fight potential for the ensuing combat. Belt of Frenzy can also be used in the middle of a fight when you are having trouble taking out the frontline, have broken the frontline and can blast squishies, or when your fight is failing and needs a boost. As long as Belt of Frenzy is not activated too late, it is a good Relic to have for fights.

Belt of Frenzy can be used to take down objectives. All of the effects from the Relic combine for just a crazy amount of additional damage on objectives. Belt of Frenzy can be used to sneak or rush the Gold Fury or Fire Giant for surprise spikes. Belt of Frenzy can also be used just to amplify the securing hit such as right before Circle of Protection is popped to guarantee the objective is not stolen. The user just has to be careful of the enemy realizing Frenzy had been used as they could take advantage of it in the next fight.

There are a couple of other ways to use Belt of Frenzy. Pressure on the first wave in mid is important and clearing first can be used to snowball by taking the enemy jungle. A team that places their mid laner and support in the mid lane at the start of the game and thinks they are down in clear can use Frenzy on the first wave to prevent the enemy from snowballing off the first wave. The support can realistically start in any lane that may fall behind early for this strategy. On the other hand, a team that has great clear early in mid or duo lane can use Frenzy on the first wave to push the advantage even harder or to quickly clear an enemy buff after pushing the first wave, another way to expand a lead.

Belt of Frenzy can also be used as a scare tactic. When you are not in position to teamfight and won’t be for a couple minutes, you can use the Relic to scare off the opponent if they get a little close. This is risky though, as the enemy can later engage knowing that the Belt of Frenzy is on cooldown.

Belt of Frenzy is a Relic that has had a bumpy history in Smite, but is back and is strong. The item increases the damage of one’s team for a considerable amount and is built primarily by supports. Belt of Frenzy can be used in fights, at objectives, or pretty much whenever you think you need a team-wide damage boost.
