Fear the Bat! The Strength of Camazotz in the Solo Lane
Analyzing what makes Camazotz a top solo laner in Smite.
Analyzing what makes Camazotz a top solo laner in Smite.
Camazotz is one of the best characters in Smite right now. As a top solo laner, the Deadly God of Bats is often picked or banned in competitive Smite games. There are plenty of reasons why Camazotz is so highly valued. He has a strong early game with high damage and amazing sustain, malleable build paths, and is a flex pick. In this article, we will explain what makes Camazotz a great solo lane god.
Camazotz is an aggressive god. He is all about dealing damage and healing up in combat. His passive, Essence Drinker, give Camazotz Vampirism, which increases his healing and lifesteal by 4%. In addition, whenever a player dies, they leave behind a pool of essence visible only to Camazotz. While Camazotz stands in a pool, he regains up to 20% of his maximum health and mana.
Camazotz’s first ability is Screech. He shoots out a line attack that pierces minions. The profectile does up to 270 damage with 70% scaling. If Screech hits an enemy god, it will produce three echoes that that radiate from the target. If Camazotz catches one of the echoes, he gains vision of the target and up to 40 additional power.
Vampiric Bats is an ability that fires off a single-target projectile. The spell deals massive damage a base value of 380, with an absurd 135% power scaling, split between the initial hit and a slowing dot. After the dot, the bats will return to Camazotz and heal him. If Camazotz uses Vampiric bats on a jungle camp leader, he gains Vampirism, increasing his lifesteal and overall healing by 3%. This buff stacks up to three times and lasts 210 seconds. The Vampirism from the Bats exists as separate buffs than the Vampirism from the passive.
Camazotz has a short-ranged leap called Devour. He jumps on enemies for 320 damage at max rank and heals for 50 per target hit. The healing of this ability was so strong that is got reduced by five per target in Patch 5.7. This nerf has an impact on the early game where the 30 health difference from jumping on a minion wave matters more.
Bat Out of Hell is the ultimate ability of Camazotz. He flies in the air, becoming CC immune and untargetable for four seconds. In this duration, Camazotz may swoop up to three times, dealing damage to all targets hit and increasing the damage of a swoop by each additional targets hit. This damage was reduced from 300 to 280 damage per swoop in patch 5.7, but it still hits very hard.
Camazotz brings a lot of damage, but he provides very little control.
Camazotz has a very strong early game, which he can use to leverage leads in the lane. Camazotz has two main strengths in his early game: his sustain and damage. He can bully down opponents while keeping himself healthy.
Camazotz is great at keeping himself alive. His passive allows him to heal up while just clearing the wave with basic attacks, or in the aftermath of fights. The bat can then finish off a wave with Devour for burst healing if he was tanking the wave. Throwing Vampiric Bats on minions and gods will continually provide Camazotz with extra healing. Camazotz has to maintain his Vampirism stacks by regularly casting his bats on major jungle minions to keep his increased lifesteal and healing buff. When paired with items such as Warrior’s Blessing and Gladiator’s Shield, Camazotz can maintain a high health level and survive through adversity.
In addition to high self-sustain, Camazotz is great at killing his lane opponent. All of his skills have high base damage and good scaling. Both Screech and Vampiric Bats are ranged and can be used for safe poke. Camazotz can continually poke his opponents, causing them to burn through potions and eventually take bad backs under risk of death. Camazotz has a great all-in too. If his opponent gets low enough, Camazotz can throw out all his abilities and finish them off with Bat Out of Hell. Camazotz also has a uniquegank assist, where his high damage can be paired with a jungler to just quickly kill the enemy solo laner.
Guardians are popular in the solo lane, and Camazotz can excel against them in lane. He wears them down and tends to push minions under their tower. New in Season 5, minions under an enemy tower will ignore other minions and just hit the tower. Over the course of the laning phase, Camazotz will push enough minions under the opponent's tower to knock it down, freeing Camazotz to roam or invade and making it risky for the enemy solo to farm. Camazotz can use this lead to snowball his team to victory.
When facing higher pressure gods, such as the average Warrior, Camazotz will have a harder time pushing minions under the tower, but his sustain keeps him alive in the lane. If Camazotz is able to get advantages and kill his direct opposition, he can be set up for the snowball he desires.
Camazotz can choose between two paths when leveling his skills in the early game. Leveling Screech provides safer wave clear and decent poke. Screech can clear the wave from range and poke the lane opponent. Devour, on the other hand, hits for more damage and heals Camazotz per target hit. Using Devour for wave clear is not safe, as you use your escape tool to kill minions. Both abilities are great for wave clear and which one to level depends on player preference and what they think they can get away with in the matchup. The third hit of Camazotz’s hit chain is a cleave, which massively helps Camazotz clear the wave early or allows Camazotz to save his abilities for fighting, depending on the pressure dynamic of the lane.
A solo lane Camazotz has a few build paths they can use. Camazotz will start with Warrior’s blessing and often a Chalice of Healing. After buying Warrior Tabi, he has a few options. Sometimes Camazotz will go straight tank, building just protection items like a Warrior or Guardian solo. Sometimes Gladiator's Shield is built as a bridge item to give Camazotz some protections and healing against physical gods. The rest of the tank up build path depends on the enemy composition.
In other cases, Camazotz will build some damage items. Transcendence can be bought after boots for more damage in the lane and early fights. Power and Penetration items can be sprinkled into the build path, but at least half the items should be protection items. Camazotz is also great with hybrid items such as Masamune and Void Shield. These items give Camazotz damage and bulk, so he can still kill enemies while surviving. The degree of tankiness in a Camazotz build depends on the player, matchup, and flow of the game.
Camazotz solo can choose between several itemization options.
Camazotz is very strong early and wants to snowball the early game before the team fight phase of games. In the mid to late game, Camazotz just wants to pounce and kill a squishy with his damage. Bat Out of Hell can be used to pick off low health targets or soften up a grouped-up team. With a squishy build, Camazotz will just get blown up if he jumps into a late game fight, but a tanky bat can fight and survive with his healing.
Even though Camazotz is very strong, he does have answers. In general, he is weaker against tanky teams and compositions with easy lock down to prevent him from getting to enemy carries. Camazotz has a lot of healing, so antiheal from abilities and items can shut his survivability down.
Camazotz can also struggle in lane against other gods with high pressure. Achilles, for example, also comes with high base damages and healing and can beat up Camazotz and win the lane. Pushing a Camazotz out of lane denies him from getting a lead and snowballing.
Camazotz is not just a solo laner. In competitive environments, a Camazotz pick can threaten to flex into other roles. He has the ability to be a jungler, where his high damage is supplemented by assassin itemization. Camazotz has also been played in the carry position in the duo lane, where he can bully a Hunter in lane. Camazotz can be flexed in a draft to hide picks or get advantageous matchups around the map.
Camazotz is one of the most popular gods in high level Smite games right now. He has a very strong early game with high damage and sustain. Camazotz can also flex his role and build choices to best suit the individual match. Camazotz is highly valued and we will see how far the he can be pushed after 5.7 has nerfed the Deadly God of Bats.
