Did You Know? A Series Of Tips On Smite Abilities

With so many different abilities in Smite, it can be hard to keep track of them all!

Generally, each God in Smite has small tricks and tips that many people forget or do not know about. There are also general items of information that we overlook or disregard. Knowledge is power, so have a quick read through and perhaps you'll discover something new!

General

- Mesmerize

The Mesmerize ability is a fairly uncommon type of Crowd Control (CC) possessed by Apollo, Cupid, Kumbhakarna and Raijin. This type of CC can be very useful in saving yourself or an ally. A mesmerized unit cannot take any action, however this is cancelled if the unit takes any damage (excluding minion damage). Therefore, this can be used to your advantage if you are low on health. By mesmerizing an enemy, they cannot react to follow you, making it a little easier to make a get away! However, what most people forget is that Mesmerize stops the enemy from making any action until they are damaged. If you see an enemy God mesmerized with an ally attempting to get back to safety, do not attack them. By attacking them, you provide them with the ability to follow-up and chase your low-health ally!

- The Titan

The Titan is the final objective in most Smite game modes standing between your team and victory! However, what many of us forget, is that the more enemy Towers and Phoenixes that are still standing, the stronger the Titan is! In Conquest, Titans have a base health of 8000HP, with an extra 500HP for each Tower that team has, and an extra 1500HP for each Phoenix that team has. Therefore, the more Towers and Phoenixes your team destroy, the better!

NB: Bold statistics are when the Titan is immune to all damage (as all Phoenixes are still alive); therefore are theoretical statistics

Phoenixes Towers Health Physical Protection Magical Protection Physical Power 0 0 8000 60 45 250 1 0 9500 75 51 310 1 1 10000 80 53 330 1 2 10500 85 55 350 2 0 11000 90 57 370 2 1 11500 95 59 390 2 2 12000 100 61 410 2 3 12500 105 63 430 3 4 13000 110 65 450 3 0 12500 105 63 430 3 1 13000 110 65 450 3 2 13500 115 67 470 3 3 14000 120 69 490 3 4 14500 125 71 510 3 5 15000 130 73 530 3 6 15500 135 75 550

If we compare the difference between destroying all 6 towers and all 3 phoenixes, to that of destroying all 6 towers and only 2 phoenixes, we can see a fairly significant difference. With one Phoenix (as opposed to none), the Titan has an extra 1500HP, 15 Physical Protections, 6 Magical Protections and 60 Physical Power. Consider these bonuses next time when you are debating whether or not to destroy the last remaining Phoenix!

So, the enemy towers and phoenixes are down, and you are progressing towards the enemy Titan. You start attacking, and see its health go down to 50% before retreating, with the intention of returning with your teammates soon to finish it. STOP. If you damage the Titan and then leave the enemy base, the Titan will heal a percentage of its health! Similarly, if you attack an enemy God whilst in the Titan’s targeting area, it will heal a percentage of its health! This strategy is ultimately counter-productive and can be damaging to you if you receive damage from the Titan whilst attacking it – the Titan can heal quicker than you!

- Soul Reaver

A popular item amongst mages, Soul Reaver provides +100 Magical Power and +300 Mana. In addition, when a God takes damage from an ability, they take 15% of their maximum health in additional damage, occurring once every 60 seconds. What most people do not know, is that if an ability hits multiple enemies, Soul Reaver’s passive affects the one with the highest health!

- Player Deployables

Anhur’s Shifting Sands, Ymir’s Ice Wall and Odin’s Ring of Spears can protect you from enemy Ultimates. For example, Hercules’ boulder will bounce off of these walls, and He Bo’s Ultimate will not be able to penetrate the deployable, leaving him stuck behind the wall.

God Specific

- Ah Puch

Ah Puch’s ultimate, Empty the Crypts, unleashes a swarm of wraiths. These wraiths move in straight lines, disappearing after colliding with a target or a deployable. This means that if they hit an object such as Ymir’s Ice Wall, the wraiths will die and not hit any targets behind this wall.

- Ares

‘I HAVE YOU NOW!’…and he really does. If Ares uses his Ultimate, No Escape, whilst you are backing, and you successfully return to your fountain, you will be pulled all the way from your fountain back to Ares! This also applies to Janus portals.

- Bellona

Bellona is a very versatile God who can succeed in a variety of roles, with a range of different items. If you build lifesteal items on Bellona, be aware that basic attacks whilst using her hammer (Bludgeon) only have 33% lifesteal.

- Freya

A staple of Freya’s kit is her second ability (Pulse), changing her melee basic attacks into ranged basic attacks, dealing AOE damage and slowing enemies. However, if Pulse is used with Irridate, Freya’s basic attacks will become single target and no longer slow, but will deal increased damage.

Freya can use Banish on minions, enemy Gods and enemy pets. However, one uncommon piece of knowledge is that Freya can use this ability on Loki’s Decoy. This makes Freya an extremely viable counter for Loki in the solo lane. Decoy is Loki’s main source of waveclear in lane, taunting minions towards it and exploding, dealing damage. If timed right, Freya can banish the Decoy just as it is about to explode, protecting her minions from the damage, and exhausting Loki’s main source of waveclear! Ultimately, this will give Freya a huge advantage in lane.

- Hades

When Hades uses his third ability, Devour Souls, on a Blighted enemy, he deals damage to enemies and also heals allies. Many people forget that this heal is an AOE heal, affecting allied Gods and not just Hades himself.

- Hercules

Hercules’ Ultimate, Excavate, is a boulder that deals damage where it lands. This boulder bounces off walls, including player-made walls such as Ymir’s Ice Wall. This can be manipulated for some funny plays, as shown in the video below!

- Kumbhakarna

One of the features of Kumbhakarna’s kit which we all find highly annoying is his passive ‘Sleepy’. When Kumbhakarna reaches 0 HP he falls asleep instead of being killed, and must be basic attacked to be killed. If he is not killed within 8 seconds, he will awaken with 25% HP and mana. What most people forget is that the passive exists! Many people will tower-dive a low health Kumbhakarna to secure a kill, and he will simply fall asleep! Alternatively, players will execute Kumbhakarna, and instead of being executed, he takes a small nap. Think about when you last saw Kumbhakarna in his passive. It has a large cooldown timer of 240s, so is relatively easy to avoid. Think before you use your ultimate on that low HP Kumbhakarna!

If you are the person playing Kumbhakarna, do not forget that your third ability, Mighty Yawn, can be used whilst you are in your passive to mesmerize all enemy Gods in the radius of the ability. This prevents them from taking any action, meaning that they can no longer attack you! Also, remember that Kumbhakarna is knockback immune whilst channelling his second ability, Groggy Strike.

- Kali

Marked for Death is Kali’s well-known passive. Upon killing a God targeted by Death Mark, she heals 80% of her HP. However, if she does not secure the kill, but instead gets an assist, she receives 15% HP. But remember, this healing is affected by healing reduction!

- Mercury

Known for his speed, it is only fitting that Mercury’s passive, Fastest God Alive, gives him a physical power bonus for the distance he has travelled! For every one foot he has travelled, he gains a 0.1% physical power buff (up to 50%). However, this passive does not charge whilst Mercury is jumping (despite him having an awesome jump animation!)

- Neith

World Weaver is (in my eyes) a very irritating ability! Playing Neith, you must remember that the longer you channel the ability, the more damage it will deal. Firing it immediately only does 50% damage, however channeling it for three seconds will deal 100% damage.

If you are being ulted by World Weaver, you can avoid the damage (and potentially a death) by hiding behind an ally (preferably your high health support rather than a low health ally!) Remember, that the ultimate must be blocked from the direction in which Neith is shooting. For example if she is north of you, the ally you are hiding behind must be to the north of you.

- Nox

Shadow Step is Nox’s third ability, which can be used offensively or defensively. She can dash into enemies or dash into an allied God, hiding in their shadow for up to eight seconds. It is possible for her to Shadow Step into an ally who has a ‘global’ Ultimate (for example flying into the air or travelling a large distance across the map), and she will land with them and be able to exit them at this new location.

Nox’s ultimate (Night Terror) is a vortex exploding on contact with an enemy God or at the end of its range. However, this vortex can be aimed at and explode on contact with a wall. This can help Nox hit someone trying to escape, by detonating it on a wall nearby, so the enemy God is hit by the AOE explosion. Alternatively, you could use player-made walls to block her Ultimate from hitting you or an ally.

- Nu Wa

After hand-crafting humanity from clay, it is appropriate that Nu Wa has some Clay Soldiers in her kit! These soldiers aren’t always the smartest of guys, but charge and deal damage with basic attacks. They can also be exploded with Shining Metal. However, many people forget that these Clay Soldiers reduce an enemy God’s magical protection!

For her Ultimate, Nu Wa ascends to the sky and summons Fire Shards to damage each enemy God. Nu Wa will get assists for any kill occurring whilst she is in her ultimate, whether or not Fire Shards damaged the enemy God who died.

- Odin

Ring of Spears not only traps enemy Gods in the ring, but also stops healing. Any healing abilities do not apply a heal whilst the God is inside the ring. This includes lifesteal. Enemy Gods in the ring also have their attack speed lowered by up to 60%!

- Raijin

Joining Smite in February 2016, Raijin is the second Japanese God to come to the game. His seconnd ability, Raiju, marks a target enemy, and deals damage when Raijin next damages the targeted enemy God. However, most players do not know that Raiju can mark reveal enemies who are in stealth, such as Loki or Ao Kuang.

- Serqet

The Goddess of Venom’s ultimate, Last Breath, can be applied to minions and jungle camp minions. Note this when attempting to ult an enemy God, as there is a chance that you miss them and instead, use your Ultimate on a minion. However, you can ult the minion of your choice, leading to some funny plays!

- Sobek

Charge Prey can be an intimidating ability to be against, especially in the duo lane. Sobek has the potential to throw you behind him, which might mean a trip to the enemy tower or towards the enemy ADC. If you are hit by this ability, you are likely to take a large amount of damage. However, this ability can hit minions, so the best way to dodge it is to let the minions block the attack for you!

- Sun Wukong

When Sun Wukong uses his Ultimate, Somersault Cloud, he leaves a decoy behind to fight for him. This decoy can be executed, so be aware if Sun Wukong has used his ultimate yet or not, before going for a gank! Similarly, Neith’s World Weaver can target and hit the Sun Wukong decoy.

- Vamana

Sleeping Baby Giant is Vamana’s passive, partially affecting his Ultimate, Colossal Fury. If Vamana is damaged whilst in his Ultimate, the duration of the Ultimate is extended by 0.5s per hit, up to a maximum of 10s. Many people forget this, and attack him whilst he is in his Ultimate. Unless he has extremely low health, this is not a very good idea!

- Vulcan

Earthshaker, Vulcan’s Ultimate, starts at 60% strength, and will deal more damage the further it travels; gaining 0.33% damage for each unit travelled. This means that the further Vulcan’s Ultimate is from him, the more damage it will deal!

- Xbalanque

When Xbalanque uses his ultimate, all enemies are shrouded in darkness for 3 seconds, and Xbalanque gains additional range on his basic attacks. This darkness prevents enemy wards, minions and structures from detecting anyone in their line of sight, and also allows Xbalanque to hit enemy structures from outside their radius!

- Zhong Kui

A common misconception is that stacks from Zhong Kui’s passive affect the damage of his Ultimate. His passive, Demon Bag, gives Zhong Kui a protection buff for each demon he captures. These protections are doubled when he uses his Ultimate, but his Demon Bag will be empty after using the Ultimate. However, the number of stacks from Demon Bag have no effect on the damage of his ltimate!
