A brief guide to the runes and masteries you should be taking on Kled, The Cantankerous Cavelier.
A brief guide to the runes and masteries you should be taking on Kled, The Cantankerous Cavelier.
Kled, The Cantankerous Cavelier was recently released, and people are playing him constantly. Whether it is the mirror matched normal game, or his seemingly guaranteed pick or ban presence in ranked, when new champions come out, one of the biggest questions raised is what runes and masteries to use. Mastering a champion can take hundreds of hours over many games played, but putting yourself at an advantage immediately only takes a few moments of your time. Having the right runes and masteries will not make up for not knowing higher level mechanics on a champion, but they will definitely help you survive and thrive throughout the game. In this article, the best rune and mastery options will be discussed.
Runes:
AD Marks
These are a must, due to the fact that he is a damage focused melee champion. He is all about combat. Because he is autoattack focused with skills scaling with AD, these are the obvious choice. Of the matches played by the pros, this was the one rune that was constant throughout.
Armor/Scaling Armor Seals or Scaling Health Seals
These are very situational. In a lane in which you will be trading often or getting harassed by a physical damage dealer, flat armor is idea. Against a physical damage opponent that will be fighting you less, scaling is great because after the early laning phase, they are more valuable. If you are against a magic damage lane opponent, Scaling health seals are your best option, because you will get more value from health than armor.
Scaling/Flat Magic Resistance Glyphs
These are highly recommended. Against a magic damage opponent, you definitely want flat Magic Resistance glyphs. If you are against a physical damage lane opponent with a fair amount of magic on the opposing team, scaling Magic Resistance is a better choice for the same reason scaling armor was. If there is no magic damage on the other team, consider Cooldown Reduction glyphs to help you use spells more often, since you will not get much or any value from it.
AD/AS Quints
The choice between Attack Damage or Attack Speed quintessences is yours. Generally, if you are going to be auto attack trading a lot, the attack speed will be more valuable. If you are going to be hitting the opponent with one or two auto attacks and a spell for a trade, you will better utilize the attack damage. Both of these are good options.
Masteries:
The general consensus of the community, including when looking at the match histories of some professional players, Running 18/0/12 masteries seems to be ideal.
Fury should be taken for attack speed which Kled greatly utilizes. Feast and Vampirism supply lane sustain to be able to stay in lane and pressuring your opponent. Take Oppressor because you will get more value out of it with your Q counting for the slow as well as any crowd control from a jungler, whereas you likely will not have killed more than your lane opponent and possibly the jungler to make Bounty Hunter worth it in lane. Battering Blows is the obvious choice because you deal physical and not magic damage. Lastly, because Kled is a fighter, he will utilize the stacks and damage from Fervor of Battle.
Recovery and Tough skin will help you survive longer in lane. Both of the next tier are okay, but I and many others prefer Veteran’s Scars for the flat health. It also helps you stay in your starting form longer. Lastly, Insight for Summoner Spell cooldown is a great choice to help you apply global map pressure by having Teleport up more often.
