It's All Skill - An AD Ezreal Guide

Ezreal is a meta AD Carry that received a lot of praise during the Season 6 World Championship. Superstars like Deft and Uzi showed the true value of him while others including FORG1VEN and Ruler used him fewer times, but remarkably nevertheless. Regarding Season 7, Ezreal's position in the meta will not be shifted much, as only minor changes have been made to bot lane. Overall, this is a guide that will teach you all the things an Ezreal player needs to know, and some useful tips as well. Without delay, let's take a look at what Ezreal's kit consists of.

SPELLS

Passive: Rising Spell Force

Ezreal gains increasing attack speed each time he successfully hits a spell, stacking up to 5 times. This ability is very effective as Ezreal is a spellcaster ADC, so he gets a lot of extra attack speed.

Q: Mystic Shot

Ezreal fires a damaging bolt of energy which reduces all of his cooldowns by 1.5 seconds if it strikes an enemy unit. This is the main damage source of Ezreal, besides auto-attacks. Mystic Shot can apply on-hit effects, so consider this as a massive range auto attack. This is also an auto attack reset, so use it appropriately.

W: Essence Flux

Ezreal fires a fluctuating wave of energy, dealing magic damage to enemy champions, while increasing the attack speed of allied champions. This is more like a utility tool for Ezreal, as building AD will not increase this spell's damage at all, but it can prove useful when sieging enemy structures.

E: Arcane Shift

Ezreal teleports to a target nearby location and fires a homing bolt which strikes the nearest enemy unit. This is the escape tool of Ezreal. If you Arcane Shift on Essence Flux while it is still in the air, you will get bonus attack speed.

R: Trueshot Barrage

Ezreal winds up for 1 second to fire a powerful barrage of energy missiles which do massive damage to each unit they pass through. This is the ultimate ability of Ezreal, and the one that deals the most damage. Remember that the more enemies it hits, the less damage it does.

SKILL ORDER

Ezreal's main source of damage comes from his Q (Mystic Shot), so make sure you upgrade this first and max it as fast as possible. After your Q, place your spell points in your E (Arcane Shift) to lessen its cooldown, and leave your W (Essence Flux) for the last few levels. Always remember to upgrade your R (Trueshot Barrage) whenever possible. Overall, your spell order should look like this.

ITEMS

STARTING

This is the standard build of all AD Carries, as it is the most effective item early on in terms of gold.

CORE

Manamune: Being a spellcaster has its cons early game, so building a Manamune (and not just a Tear of the Goddess) early on is a must on Ezreal, as it will stack to Muramana quicker.

Ionian Boots of Lucidity: As I mentioned, Ezreal is a spellcaster, so having a bit of extra Cooldown Reduction definitely fits his playstyle. Others might buy Berserker's Greaves but I would very rarely recommend it, as Ezreal's attack speed can already get really high from his passive.

Sheen: This item is mostly bought for its passive, which gives +100% AD in your next auto-attack after you cast an ability. Good thing is it can be procc'ed automatically by firing your Q (Mystic Shot).

FINAL BUILD

For years now, the famous blue build is AD Ezreal's main build, for various reasons. Mostly because this build allows him to scale up through early and mid game, and become a huge threat in the late game. So let's examine what each item has to offer.

Manamune/Muramana: As we said, Ezreal needs Manamune to help him with his mana problems in the laning phase. Good thing is it can be upgraded into a heavier AD item and deal a lot of damage when it is fully stacked.

Iceborn Gauntlet: It is an upgrade of Sheen, relatively cheap, and the only defensive item Ezreal will probably need as it gives armor to get him going in the mid game, so I prefer to buy it before the teamfights start.

Blade of the Ruined King: Blade of the Ruined King is an AD-AS item that allows Ezreal to get an early power spike, and that is why many Ezreal players choose to buy it really early. Really helpful when you are constantly fighting in lane. Mystic Shot can also trigger its passive, which is bonus damage based on enemy's HP. However, it can be hard to purchase as it is really expensive, and has a difficult build path.

Lord Dominik's Regards: Not a lot to say here, a Last Whisper upgrade is a must on AD Carries in Season 7. You should tend to buy it against juggernaut-type tanks, as Lord Dominik's Regards deals bonus damage the more HP an enemy has, without costing that much.

The Bloodthirster: Another heavy attack damage item. It gives a lot of AD and lifesteal. Usually built last, it's useful versus enemy fighters as it gives continuous sustain and a big shield to stack before the crucial teamfights.

So this is the basic build for Ezreal, most of the time you are going to use these items. Occasionally, you may purchase:

Maw of Malmortius

Maw of Malmortius is really good when constantly fighting against magic damage dealers, as it offers a huge amount of AD, magic resistance and a passive that gives bonus AD, lifesteal and a magic damage shield when falling below 30% of your HP.

Mortal Reminder

The other Last Whisper upgrade, it's good versus sustain compositions as it reduces enemy healing significantly. It might be also purchased against fighters with a lot of lifesteal. Costs the same as Lord Dominik's Regards.

Guardian Angel

Guardian Angel is the best item choice for those who seek some heavy defense stats and a passive that revives you after you die. However, this passive has a 5-minute cooldown so you may sell this when you have recently revived, buy something else for the duration, and re-buy it when the cooldown has ended. Usually purchased against teams with high hybrid damage.

Mercurial Scimitar

Mercurial Scimitar is a useful item against burst damage dealers, as it gives AD, lifesteal and a passive that can let you break free from all crowd control. Also excellent for skirmishing. Bad thing is it is the most expensive item in the game, thus hard to be built early.

RUNES & MASTERIES

So for Runes and Masteries, one has to select what his own playstyle needs but an average Ezreal rune page should look a lot like this.

You have Nine Greater Marks of Attack Damage, 9 Greater Seals of Armor, 9 Greater Glyphs of Magic Resist and 3 Greater Quintessences of Attack Speed, which is pretty standard for an attack speed based AD Carry like Ezreal. Others tend to put attack speed or Cooldown Reduction on Glyphs, as it fits their playstyle more.

As for Masteries, the only Mastery page you will need for Ezreal and the majority of AD Carries should be like this.

You put 18 points in the Ferocity Tree, and 12 in Cunning. Select Feast for an easier laning phase and Battle Trance for extra damage at the start of each fight. Fervor of Battle is usually chosen over Warlord's Bloodlust as Ezreal's massive attack speed makes Fervor more valuable. Another adjustment you can make is to put your 12 points in the Resolve Tree for a more defensive playstyle.

LANING PHASE

Ezreal's laning phase in general is kind of decent as he can safely farm from afar with his Mystic Shots if he is getting continuously poked. Your main goal when playing as Ezreal is to get as much gold as possible from the early game as his true power spike comes in the late game.

Ezreal is really strong from levels 1-3. That is because Ezreal's W (Essence Flux) does not get upgraded up until levels 4-5, and you can put more points on your Q (Mystic Shot). After that, Ezreal is pretty weak, and will probably fall behind in stats than the enemy AD Carry.

That is because his early build path does not help him immediately, but make him scale even harder as time progresses. Consequently, be wise as to picking your items, because buying Tear of the Goddess, Ionian Boots and Sheen on your first recall will make surviving in lane even harder. Some players that are not good in lane, prefer Pickaxe, Vampiric Scepter and Tear of the Goddess early, so as to give them some AD and lifesteal, at the cost of scaling a bit later than they would do with the previous build.

Generally, purchase Tear of the Goddess on your first recall, and delay boots for some aggressive items (such as a Vampiric Scepter or a Phage) if you're having a hard laning phase. Then, buy Sheen and Ionian Boots on your next recall. This way you will have built the core items and made the laning phase easier with little or no consequences.

TEAMFIGHTS

Ezreal's teamfighting is the same as most of AD Carries. He needs to sit back, and damage enemies with his Mystic Shots and auto-attacks, while avoiding getting caught.

His R (Trueshot Barrage) is mostly used before the fight breaks out, targeting the enemy carries, which makes it a little easier to kill them during the teamfight. Remember to always cast it outside of enemy vision, so they have less chances of dodging it.

His main goal is of course to do as much damage as he can, so you need to be careful when to teamfight, because his damage is at a really low level before at least buying 3 items. But when the time of the fight has come, make sure to land many Mystic Shots before the enemy tanks can reach you, and don't use your E (Arcane Shift) carelessly.

CONCLUSION

All in all, Ezreal is the kind of champion that is easy to play, yet hard to truly master. Please keep in mind that almost all of Ezreal's abilities are Skillshots, so if you are having a bad day, you will probably end up playing worse than you expected. Also remember that Ezreal needs to scale up first in order to deal quite an amount of damage. And always remember, no time to waste!
