A Guide to Moira, the Talon Scientist

A guide for the brand new hero announced at Blizzcon: Moira

The new support hero, Moira, has been released onto the PTR and the opinions about her kit are mixed. Some people think she's underpowered but most people think she's balanced. We won't know what impact she'll have on the current competitive meta until she has been released onto the live servers. This guide will aim for introduction to the new hero Moina, but also provide a lot of advanced insights to her abilities.

Moira is the new healing support hero, with enough damage to sustain her own survival. Let's break down Moira's kit and the strategies that will help you play and receive better results with Moira.

~ Positioning with Moira. Moira is a hero that has an ability kit inspired from many different heroes like Reaper, Symmetra and Zenyatta. Moira is best used for close quarters combat while staying near her team. Unlike other healers in the game, she's played a lot more aggressively since her RMB is a weapon that uses a beam which tethers upon enemies like Symmetra's weapon.

Moira also has a lot of advantages when she's inside of buildings with walls close to each other so she can make the most out of her abilities.

~ Biotic Orb and how to use it. Biotic Orb is Moira's ability bound to the E key is one of the, if not the most, important ability in Moira's whole ability kit. The best way to use the damaging version of Biotic Orb is to bounce it on a wall behind your enemy lines so the Biotic Orb comes back to perform a 2nd wave of damage upon your enemies. The best usage of the Biotic Orb is inside buildings where it can bounce in the same room or hallway until the duration of Biotic Orb is over. If you're outside, never aim the Biotic Orb upwards but rather straight in front of you so the duration is at its peak efficiency. The last tip that I know is that you can also use the Biotic Orb between the payload and a wall that's close to the payload to force the enemies off the payload or heal your whole team while pushing it. Beware: Genji can deflect both your damaging and your healing Biotic Orb.

~ Fade and what it can provide for Moira. Fade is Moira's escape/engage ability bound to the left-shift key. This ability allows you to move away from your team to engage on someone that is standing out of position, or escape from death. There's a trick you can apply with Fade. When you are running in Fade form against a smooth edge and time the jump right, you can boost yourself up to gain a tactical advantage with high ground or to confuse your enemies. Beware: Enemy heroes can still block you while you're inside Fade form.

Example how to reach high ground with Fade, using the smooth edges on Volskaya Industries.

~ Coalescence and the right way to use it. Coalescence, Moira's ultimate, is best used to heal your teammates instead of dealing damage. The damage that Coalescence provides is not enough to efficiently eliminate an enemy so don't use it for that reason. Remember that you can jump and move while channeling Coalescence, but you can't use Fade. When you're already using Coalescence and your team is healed up, prioritize low health enemy heroes that are far away from your team or support heroes.

~ But since she's a new healing support hero, what other main or semi-supports are best combined with Moira? This section of the guide is pure speculation, since we won't know for sure what heroes are best combined with Moira until she's been released on the live servers of Overwatch. Let's focus on her healing ability first and compare the average healing per minute compared to all the other healing supports currently live on Overwatch. She has more healing than Zenyatta, is tied with Lúcio and Ana (Ana with an average weapon accuracy, a high-level Ana will have more healing), but has less healing than Mercy.

Lúcio would be a good combination with Moira, only because of the fact that Moira can heal better on single targets. But there's more usages that Lúcio can provide for Moira. Moira's damaging ability is a long beam that tethers onto enemies like the Symmetra beam. Having a Lúcio on your team can help you close the gap easier between Moira and her enemies.

Mercy is probably the most important hero in the meta right now, with the best healing per minute in the game and the only hero to have the ability to resurrect allied heroes. Combined with Moira, they provide probably the most healing in the game. Especially with 3 tanks in your team, the healing is very useful and since Moira has such a large kit to also provide damage for the team, she can also split off the team when they're not being fully focused to get a kill herself while being able to heal herself and escape from the enemy team.

Ana has fallen out of the meta quite a bit since Season 4, but could be seeing a comeback with the new buff that she has received. Since Ana can't heal herself that much (Only with Biotic Grenade for 100 hp) Moira is always a good combination. Both the supports have good healing and Moira adds quite an important part to your team if you play with Ana: healing in an Area of Effect.

Zenyatta is maybe one of the best heroes to combine with Moira because of the synergized healing and tons of damage that the 2 supports provide together. The only weakness that this combination may have is that Moira isn't the best at defending her second support except through the healing she provides.

In conclusion, Moira is worthy of being the next healer in Overwatch but we have yet to find out if she can actually fit in the Meta. New heroes from the past have struggled a lot in the current meta because people don't know how to utilize the hero and their playstyle. Moira has a lot of potential since she offers a second support on your team that can sustain herself without too much help of her team making her very self-sufficient. Moira will probably be released onto the live servers three weeks after her launch onto the PTR servers. Good luck in your games playing against or as Moira.
