Levelling It Out: A Guide on De-Tilting

A guide on how to find, examine and then deal with personal 'Tilt,' in your games.

Tilt, when our emotional state starts to affect our level of gameplay (usually as a detriment) and as much as it is a meme in the gaming community it is very much one of the biggest causes of lost ranked gain for players.

Now to maintain decent ranking position most high ELO players have had to develop a system of tracking, recognizing and then eliminating tilt. In this guide, I plan to show this system to you so you too can apply it to increase your overall ranked gains.

Am I on Tilt?

This is probably the biggest thing with this whole concept but the concept of this question is the base for the whole system. So, you’ve just finished a ranked game, and you’re considering playing another but stop. Look back at your last game (especially if it was a loss) and look at your play.

Remember it is your play that matters. Not the Teemo’s, not your jungler’s, yours. Now that we have that out of the way, I can explain. When you look back at that game, look for your mistakes, where you got caught, where you missed a skillshot, and so on. If there are too many mistakes for your standard level of gameplay, guess what? You’re tilting, and it’s time to stop with ranked for now.

Note: Don’t be afraid to look at your stats post-game too for that additional level of analysis when identifying tilted gameplay (for me, my ward score is a stat that I check every game as a support main) to another level.

OK, I’m on Tilt, What Now?

Stop playing ranked. There is no point in you playing at a sub-par level (and probably cost yourself LP or other ranked rating) and tilting even further. By doing this you are saving yourself from yourself and ultimately making yourself a better player in the long run, so, don’t look at it in the mindset of; ‘I’m wasting time not playing ranked,’ but more as; ‘I’m ensuring I give myself the best chance to win overall.’ If you were a duo with someone don’t worry, taking a few minutes is no shame and I’m sure they won’t mind waiting for you more often than not.

But How Do I De-Tilt?

There are a variety of good ways to de-tilt. Sometimes, it's just finding the best way for you to de-tilt. For me, it is goofing in some normal games with mates or just off to play some ARAM with a new pick. For now, I am going to suggest a few different options for you to try.

Exercise

Sometimes the best way to get over a bad game is too just keep moving but away from your PC/Console. This can be done in a variety of ways (I’m sure some of you veteran LOL players are thinking of getting fit with Snoopeh right now) from going out to the gym or even just going on a walk or jog for ten minutes. The big thing is to keep your body moving (the exercise can’t hurt our wellbeing either) while our mind resets and so, de-tilts.

Cook

One of the reasons our play may have dropped in quality (causing the tilt) is that we may be hungry and so it is an issue that we need to solve. Now, this isn’t just a case of where I’m recommending that you just sit and eat, no. What I’m recommending is that you actually take some time to actually cook, even if it’s just something as simple as a bacon sandwich or as complex as a stew or casserole. Now many of us know that cooking can be a very rewarding experience (especially if your cooking for more than just yourself) but this activity works two-fold here, not only do you satisfy your hunger but you put yourself in a better mental state too as you take time away from the game but do something mentally stimulating. Result: de-tilted and ready to go!

Goof Games

One of the biggest factors that can cause tilt is the effect lost ranking can have on our perception of the game, leading to a negatively orientated mindset. The solution to this effect can be to just be not play ranked but play for the sheer wiggles and giggles of a game with no consequence on our ranked stats. A great personal example of this for me was in a 5-man premade group in which we got dumpster dumped hard in a ranked flex (5v5) game. After that experience we immediately stopped the ranked play as we knew we were all tilted off the face of the Earth, but instead of staying mad we queued for normal with a twist, off roles with kill lane setups, and my fluffing flippers was it fun (Sion Ornn bot lane going 13/3 total at 20 mins was hilarious). After this, we were so refreshed that we decided to go back to ranked feeling a lot better and proceeded to win our next two games. An example of how a goof game can be a cure for getting tilted.

Note: if you are solo, going into your game dev’s fun game modes (Like LoL's Blood Moon, URF or even ARAM) can be a way to apply this effect if you are playing solo.

Conclusion

To conclude, tilt is something we all hate but we are all going to experience at some point in our gaming careers (and yes, I see everyone who attempts to climb a ranked ladder having a trackable career) and it is something that hurts our gameplay as well as our ranked rating. The core concept of this is to (hopefully) give you all the setup of play, review, identify and the deal with your own personal tilt by you personally being a better player overall. With that may tilt never take any more ranked progression from your goal to reach new competitive levels. GL HF and GG.
