Runic Rummaging – Fun Runes for Fun Games

An offbeat piece on other ways to play a few LoL champions in a new way to have fun with the new rune system.

Now I know most of us tend to focus on getting better when we spend our time playing or even thinking about League of Legends. But this can be detrimental to our mental state and as a result, negatively affect our gameplay. When this happens it’s time to goof, make it fun by coming up with the off meta, madness mind-bendingly stupid concepts that will never work in pro but can make some solo queue normal (I don’t advise trying this in ranked) games so fun that we are reminded why we love the game so much.

In this guide I hope to show you a few fun crazy rune and champion combos that will make a game fun for you and hopefully restores your love of the game (Note: These concepts are most definitely gimmicks, they do not make a champion O.P., hidden O.P., or broken so do NOT consider these runes, champions or builds as such).

Predator Annie

Now the regular rune setup for the Dark Child has been to run Sorcery as your primary tree with Domination as your secondary, with Arcane Comet as your keystone as it the conventional choice for a mage that has no shield such as Annie. It also helps that this allows you to run Gathering Storm which is currently a great rune to run.

However, we aren’t here to run conventional runes, we are here to run the mad and in this case, the application is to flip the trees round and run Domination into Sorcery. The way this setup works is that you farm out to the three items of Luden’s, Sorcerer's Shoes, and Spellbinder. Then, oh boy are you in for fun with a Usain Bolt impression. Watch in terror as you pop Predator and Spellbinder from stealth to run at speeds unknown to man, burst a carry with Annie’s combo, and then run away before the enemy team can react. The enemy team (especially their squishier members) will find it un-bear-able.

Run with and building it with

Unsealed Spellbook Blitzcrank

Blitzcrank is usually played as tank support running Aftershock with the summoner support spells of Exhaust/Ignite alongside Flash (this has even seen some play as a pocket pick in the LCS under the control of veteran support Aphromoo). The secondary tree here is Inspiration since it allows the pickup of Biscuit Delivery to cover the pick's innate weakness of no lane sustain but increasing the number of consumables Blitzcrank can utilize. This is utilized exclusively as a pick setup-oriented champion utilizing the potency of Blitzcrank’s Q, Rocket Grab, to start fights with a man advantage.

However, we aren’t here to run conventional runes, we are here to run the mad and in the case the application is to run Unsealed Spellbook. Now, I hear you ask, why? The answer is simple - level one shenanigans with Smite. Blitzcrank has one of the best level one setups in the game due to the power of Rocket Grab, but Rocket Grab is blocked by monsters and late invades past initial monster spawns are rare, as typically level one invades in solo queue are all about the kill. However, this setup is all about the buff and so you do not leash your jungler but try and blind steal your opposing jungler’s buff then Smite it away (I would recommend hooking at about 4 seconds after the buff spawns). This not only giving you a lead in lane but putting the enemy jungler behind. Fun times for you, but not your opponents. This also sets up another neat little play in the form of Smiting the blocking minion before throwing the hook for a rather tasty support play. Once you have a charge of your keystone ready, you can change back to standard support summoner spells should you want to.

 Run with  while initially selecting

Glacial Augment Janna

Janna typically runs Summon Aery as she can utilise both sides of its usage (the damaging and shielding natures) and in fairness, it is a solid strategy, but it is rather passive. And passive is no fun because you feel like you have no impact even though you most certainly do as the recent Ardent Censer metas have shown.

Yet we are here to have fun in this scenario and for that we are going to be a bit more proactive with Glacial Augment. The way to play is simple - be as annoying as possible for the enemy frontline and engage. Just watch as a Rammus sits there knocked up then slowed after Powerballing through the river to bot for no purpose. Admit it, you’re smirking even thinking about it. If you run Font of Life from the Resolve tree, you proc Ardent Censer on any target not only affected by Glacial Augment but Howling Gale and Zyphyr (Janna’s Q and W abilities) meaning if you want to switch back to the full peel strategy, you do have that option. Once again fun for you, frustration for your opposition.

 Run with and

Conclusion

To conclude these suggestions and any other fun rune setups you can come up with (in any role for any champion, remember runes are for you to have fun and experiment with) are not the optimal, most efficient, or most powerful (unless you accidently find something that is hidden OP, which could happen). But that’s the point here. The point of this isn’t to be try hard, but to be having fun. So, may you all have fun with this and I hope it can re-kindle your love for LoL as it has done for me on more than one occasion. GL HF and GG
