"Good Squad Means Good Times" - A Guide on Team Compositions in Apex Legends

A detailed discussion of different team compositions that can help you on your way to becoming the Apex Champion during Patch 1.1.1.

Apex Legends is a game that needs no introduction. With concurrent player records outshining the biggest titles in recent history and less than two weeks between its release to the public and its first competitive event, the global gaming community has taken kindly to the fast-paced, trigger-happy gameplay Apex has to offer.

One of the most interesting components of Apex that attracts new players and encourages them to improve is the roster of Legends available and the abilities that they each possess. A well-timed Jump Into the Void as Wraith, a clutch D.O.C. Heal Drone as Lifeline, or a devastating Bangalore Rolling Thunder can turn the tide between yourself and a more experienced opponent in an encounter.

Each of those previously mentioned abilities are powerful in their own right, but knowing how to use your own abilities in conjunction with the other Legends in your squad can improve your game drastically. That's why we're going to have a look at three different team compositions you and your squadmates can form to create the cleanest synergies King's Canyon will ever see.

"Try to move me; it'll be fun"
Gibraltar, Lifeline, & Caustic

This team composition is focused on locking down an area of the team's choice and countering aggressive pushes from opposing squads. Particularly following the recent changes made in patch 1.1.1, this squad suits the player that prefers to take control of their surroundings with strong defensive abilities, starkly contrasting the speedy scenes you'd usually see in Apex. This squad now has a higher survivability based purely on the trio's passives, as the two aptly named Thicc Bois of the squad were given the passive perk Fortified (courtesy of the recent patch), reducing all damage taken by 10%, and Lifeline's Swift Revive is there to get them back on their bulky feet should anything go wrong.

In terms of their activated abilities, Gibraltar's Dome of Protection is the most dynamic mechanic in this composition, as it can be used to shield allies or trap enemies in the right situation and can benefit both Lifeline and Caustic's kits depending on the situation. His dome synergises well with all of Lifeline's kit - her Care Pod, in providing a safe landing zone for your loot, her D.O.C. Heal Drone in giving extra protection while your squad resets, and her Combat Medic passive by adding an additional layer of protection, meaning that restoring your squad to fighting shape is faster than ever before.

In tandem with Caustic's abilities, Gibraltar's traditionally defensive kit ensures that chokepoints mean certain death for wandering enemies. Whether it's placing a Nox Gas Grenade inside the dome and a Bombardment outside or lining canyon walls and building interiors with Nox Gas Traps and preventing escape with a Bombardment behind them, this creates a highly unfavourable situation for any enemies without high mobility.

"I'm quick and you're dead"
Pathfinder, Wraith, & Octane

Where the previous team composition was based on the hugely defensive capabilities of the biggest legends in the game, this one is more in line with the high Octane (heh) energy of Apex Legends. Traditionally, this composition would have seen Bangalore take Pathfinder's place due to Pathfinder's insanely large hitbox. However, to the credit of the developers, there were major changes made to our favourite robot's hitbox following patch 1.05 which means that he has earned his rightful place in this particular squad.

Getting into the synergy of this squad, each of these legends possess a mobile kit capable of chasing down kills and disengaging from encounters with pace on both an individual and team level. Octane's Stim, Wraith's Into the Void and Pathfinder's Grappling Hook enable the inner killmonger in the solo player while all of their respective Ultimate Abilities have the potential to throw your entire team into the fray and sweep up enemy squads in no time at all.

The main thing to remember as you start popping off in this squad is that hurtling towards enemies with the use of your abilities makes it exceedingly difficult to disengage from poor fights, possibly leaving you as easy pickings for a strong defensive squad that's already burrowed in. Used correctly, however, this is a squad that will see you take top spot at lightning speeds.

"Follow my path to win"
Bloodhound, Lifeline, & Wraith

The other two previously mentioned team compositions assume at least a general level of skill in the mechanics and combat in Apex, but this one is specifically designed so that the newer players entering King's Canyon can give themselves the best chance at survival while they learn the ropes. After all, this guide is intended to showcase a few of the strongest squads that are designed to give you and your team an edge over other players but, without cutting-edge gunplay and razor sharp reflexes, your edge might not compare to some of the cutthroat legends that have poured time and effort into perfecting their game.

This being said, the combination of the disengage provided by Wraith's Ultimate and the sustainability through Lifeline's Tactical mean that two defensive elements of the previous squads are joined with Bloodhound's intel-gathering abilities to give new players an abundance of information that other experienced players will gain intuitively. Bloodhound and Wraith's passives combine to warn new players of impending danger and Lifeline's passive gets players back on their feet quicker, giving them a higher probability of surviving lethal encounters and subsequently granting them a second chance to develop their skills.

These are just a few squad compositions that you can take into your next games to improve your chances of taking home a win. As you become more confident as a solo player or find a squad that you click with, you can begin experimenting with some of your choices for a different way to play the game. At the end of the day though, don't be too surprised if you see any one of these three powerful teams featured as your Champion Squad in upcoming games during Season 1 of Apex Legends.
