One of Rocket League's strongest elements is its car customizer. We tell you some ways you can really deck out your ride for matches.
Rocket League is a game about cars playing soccer. Yes, its high octane, fast-paced gameplay can overshadow other elements of the game. But, one other thing that always will stand out is its rich customization. For a game that presents itself as smaller, it packs quite the punch and that includes on the creative side.
Ever since it released back in 2015, it still has some of the best decorative features in gaming. Almost every aspect of your car can be changed. On top of that, you can unlock more items to really swag things out. It adds extra personality to a game that is always rich in character and charm.
There are so many things that can be customized. Even some of the smallest things that you may not think about often. Not to mention that there are so many things that get released all the time, so there's no shortage of car swag. And with the quirkiness that Rocket League presents, everything feels more vibrant, personal, and fun.
Creating your ride to fit your style is almost as fun as the games themselves. It's a signature feature of the game that just tells you that it's Rocket League. Style isn't everything in the game of course, but it certainly is a great way to express yourself. Plus, it's kind of a cool way to show how far you've come. You'll look back at old highlights and think "wow, my car was so plain". So, we'll give you some tips on some cool ways to deck out your speedy little car.
1. Choose your car and feel free to switch it up
OK, so this seems pretty obvious, but it's always fun choosing which vehicle you want to use for your matches. There are so many great options, even when you're just starting out. Go with whichever you think looks the most stylish. Do you want something that's small and compact? Perhaps you want something thicker?
Whatever you choose, whether it's a classic Super-Sonic Acrobatic Rocket-Powered Battle-Cars (the original Rocket League) style vehicle, a muscle car, or van, there's a little bit of everything. And not to worry if you're brand new; there are no major advantages or disadvantages for any of these rides so this keeps a competitive balance in the game.
Once you have your vehicle, go ahead and play around with the colors. There is a rich variety of colors to choose from and there are two types to customize. You're usually either playing for the blue team or the red team. And although orange and blue are the colors, you can mix it up even more.
For example, for your blue vehicle design, you can change it to other colors that are similar to blue, such as purple. And with orange, you can switch it up to a color like red. So this gives you a chance of still giving you some personal flavor without the confusion of having out of sync designs. So even before you get to everything else, you can still have some stylish and ready to play.
2. Add some decals
Decals may be the most visible thing on your vehicle. Each car has its own selection of styles to choose from, so perhaps a ride's decal options could play a role in which one you want. Most vehicles have at least four or five styles to choose from. You can also unlock some new ones by just playing in matches.
The better you play, the more XP you gain. The more XP you gain, you'll be able to unlock Blueprints (replacing crates) where you can earn some new decals (among many other things) for your cars. Just keep in mind that it's totally random. So you'll never know what vehicle the new paint will be for until it's revealed.
If it looks sweet enough for you, then maybe you could switch to that particular vehicle and see how stylish it looks during games as you lead your team to victory. And even if you think that vehicle you like doesn't have the best decals, you can still unlock some more for them. Just remember that it's at random. Otherwise, just roll with the coolest looking decal you see from your favorite car if you don't want to switch.
3. Put a cool Antenna or topper on your vehicle
Hats and flags are always fun, silly items to put on your cars. Certainly, the caps (called Toppers) are especially hilarious and they stand out even more than the decals. There are quite a few to choose from early on, but then you can earn some more simply by playing. Level up, and you'll start receiving Battle Pass rewards, including caps.
The Toppers are more than just regular hats. It could be something totally wacky like a squid or a set of golf clubs. They are all stylish in their own way and help you show off your personality a bit. Maybe you want to go with something low-key like a regular hat, or perhaps you want something with extra swagger like pixelated shades (which you can unlock).
Whatever your taste is, there are plenty of Toppers to choose from. And if you're a sports fan, you'll see that Major League Baseball has a set of items that you can purchase. This includes new Toppers of hats with some of your favorite baseball teams (Go White Sox).
As for the flags (called Antennas), these go beautifully with your Toppers. There are a ton of cool ones that are in the game from the jump and some others you will unlock of course. From a panda on bamboo tree to a hula girl or that lucky rubber duckie, there's a bit of everything. Then you have plenty of fun community flags to select from too. These flags represent different platforms such as YouTube and Discord for example as well a few media outlets like GameSpot and PC Gamer.
And just like with the Toppers, the MLB pack includes Antennas. Furthermore, there is a free pack of NBA flags to place on your car. So if you're a fan of basketball, then this is something you should definitely download. These look great the colors of your favorite teams are vibrant. It's a nice, free pack.
4. Pick a cool boost type
Boost is interesting since it's not something that is necessarily on your car. It's a part of it, but it's not painted or planted on it. But in Rocket League, turbo boosts are extremely stylish, and they make their presence known to you big time when you're playing. I'm sure you know how many times we use boost in matches.
Boost puts the "rocket" in Rocket League, really. In order for you to gain speed and make amazing aerial plays, boost is what gets the job done. So really, it's kind of like your best friend. But as with everything else, you can choose from many different boost styles for your game.
What makes the boosts highly distinctive is that, for one, it's shooting right back at you since the camera faces behind the vehicle. Two, they each look different, and three; each of them have unique sounds. For example, if you have the money boost, you will hear the sounds of change and paper flying. If you have the hearts one, you'll hear the beautiful sound of a harp as you use the boost.
So with boosts, you get distinction, sound and they are immensely helpful during matches. What's not to love, right? And they all present many different colors and also just look cool on replays after you score (if you used it). Aside from the action, crowd noise, and announcers, the only other constant is the boost, whether it's seeing it or hearing it, it's almost always there and it becomes a recognized attachment of your vehicle.
5. Having a wheelie good time
Cheesy use of wording aside, fresh wheels are another fantastic addition to any "soccar" vehicle. If you're a car enthusiast, then you know how important rims are when it comes to stylish rides. You can't get out there and hit the ball around like the pro that you are without some wheels.
Wheels are among the more valuable customization items in the game. They can be easily earned through playing the game and opening up Blueprints, but for premium ones or during special events, they are usually quite expensive. One thing about them is that, yes, they get you moving but they are also thick.
Sometimes, you'd think you can see Rocket League wheels from miles away. It's the size and the overall creativity of the style of them that adds to their value. Some of the coolest ones you'll find are during special events whether it's for Halloween, Christmas, or any other holiday or occasion. For example, there was some cool jack-o-lantern wheels they had during one spooky event.
And going back to the Esports Shop, the wheels you'll see here are also gorgeous. With a nice, big logo of your favorite team as the rim, these are great ways to show your team spirit. And yes, Dignitas also features these wheels from time to time too. Just keep in mind that your favorite team is not always going to be available like we mentioned earlier. But, wheels are everything in this game because, without them, the show can't go. So choose some awesome ones and hit the pitch.
