Some tips & tricks to improve your Genji play!
First off, let me start by saying that Genji is NOT front-line character. He is at his best when he is catching his targets off guard and aggravating the enemy team from behind enemy-lines. The priority in any game is the objective, but for Genji, his priority is to cause mayhem on the battlefield. You don’t want the enemy to know where you are until it's too late.
For Genji, it’s crucial to stay on the move all the time as his health is one of the lowest in the game. Take advantage of Genji’s double jump and wall-climbing ability to evade or/and penetrate the enemy's side and pick them off one by one. Take care not to get swarmed by three or more players at a time and choose your targets carefully as some match-up for Genji can prove very fatal, like Winston or Mei.
Use Your Abilities Wisely!
Genji’s is a three-star hero, which means that he is not a hero you can pick up and master in a day. Understanding and utilising Genji’s abilities successfully can turn you into a force to be reckoned with. Let’s start things off with a very underrated ability in his arsenal, his Quick Melee. The Quick Melee is usually used when an enemy is two inches away from you and you’re in mid reload, but for Genji’s case, it can be used to create some epic combos if pulled off correctly.
For example, if an enemy hero is in front of you, you can pull off a Shuriken, Quick Melee and Swift strike to deal approximately 165- 250 damage in total. The key here is to learn the Shuriken’s speed and travel time. You have to be able constantly adjust your aim throughout the Shuriken clicks to hit all three shurikens to be able to deal as much damage as possible.
Next is his his Swift Strike. Genji’s Swift Strike resets every time you get an elimination. Whether it's a kill or kill assist, Swift Strike will reset after an elimination. However, killing anything else that isn't a hero won't reset the cooldown. This also includes D.Va's mech. The best time to use Genji’s Swift Strike is when the enemy hero has two bars of health left in the health bar. That way it's a confirmed kill and will reset the cooldown, but that’s not the only way to use the ability. Since Genji doesn't have an escape move, an alternative would be to use it to quickly escape a sticky situation or reach a health pack faster.
Timing Is Key!
A lot of players assume that if you pull off a successful Deflect, the attack goes automatically back to the one who dealt it first but that’s not the case. When using Deflect, you have to manually aim it back at the heroes who shot it at you. Just remember that you can only Deflect projectiles attacks like Tracer and Pharah's attacks. You can also Deflect ultimates if they're projectile based. However, it’s important to know when to use the Deflect ability, because advanced players will most likely try and bait you into using Deflect if they see you coming (which, by the way, was a bad thing considering you’re supposed to be a ninja).
Lastly, let’s look at Genji’s Dragonblade. When he activates his ultimate, Genji brandishes his katana for a brief period of time. Until he sheathes his sword, Genji can deliver killing strikes to any targets within his reach. The best time to use his ultimate, believe it or not, is when the enemy is totally distracted with the objective or your teammates. Position and timing is key to maximise the power of the Dragonblade. Once you unleash the blade, try and take out the healer of the enemy team first to prevent them from healing their teammates, otherwise your ultimate may end up been in vain. Alternatively, seek out the hero closest to you, and begin slicing until everything in sight is eliminated.
To keep yourself alive longer while using Dragonblade, it’s ideal to try and combine Dragonblade with Swift Strike to make it harder for the enemy to take you out. Getting your first dash reset early on is very important as the rest of the kills will become a lot easier to achieve.
And that’s it for me. If these tips have helped you out in any way, let me know in the comments below and share this article with other Genji players or new players looking to use Genji.
