Apex Legends has taken the gaming world by storm. It's free-to-play like Fortnite but with a futuristic twist. To keep a free-to-play game running they need to have some type of monetization located in the game, and they've done it without harming the gameplay. In this article we'll go over what Apex Packs actually are, how you can obtain them, and the quickest ways of doing so. Let's get into it!
Apex Packs
Apex Packs are the lootboxes of Apex Legends. We've seen similar systems in the most recent installments of Call of Duty and games like Overwatch, Heroes of the Storm, etc. At the start, you'll receive these quickly, but as you play the game the constant flow of Apex Packs will significantly slow down. This is due to the amount of XP needed for every level increasing. These lootboxes contain three items, and you're guaranteed to get at least one Rare or better item, a 24.8% chance to get an Epic item or better, and (last but not least) a 7.4% chance of getting a Legendary item or better.
You are guaranteed to get at least one Legendary after opening 30 Apex Packs. There also are no cosmetic duplicates in this game.
Items that you can get from these Apex Packs include:
• Weapon Skins
• Intro Quips
• Kill Quips
• Legend Skins
• Legend Finishers
• Banner Frames
• Banner Poses
• Banner Stat Trackers
• Crafting Materials
The absolute rarest items in the game are Heirloom Sets, these extremely rare items have less than a 1% chance of being in your recently acquired Apex Pack but have a guaranteed drop when you hit the ceiling of 500 Apex Packs opened.
Obtaining Apex Packs through in-game activities
You'll be able to collect Apex Packs as you level up with the XP requirement increasing, eventually slowing down the flow of Apex Packs to your account. There are multiple ways of getting XP but some are more effective than others. Here is a rundown of what generally gives you XP while playing Apex Legends:
• Time Survived
• Kills
• Damage done
• Revive Ally
• Respawn Ally
• Playing with Friends (10% Overall XP Boost)
On top of this, there's also a concept of Champions in-game. These Champions can be appointed by their performance in their previous game and are calculated by their placements plus their kills. You can also become the Kill Leader while playing your match if you have the most kills out of the 59 other people. Not much will change, you'll just be a normal enemy with a larger bounty on your head that players can only find out when they've just killed you.
Both Champions and Kill Leaders have separate XP bounty assigned to them. If you manage to kill one of them, you'll get a nice bonus of 500 XP added to the results of your match. These are listed in the results after a match as follows:
• Killed Champion
• Kill Leader
As shown in the image above, you'll have to work your way up the levels to receive some currency that you can use to buy cosmetics in-game. As previously mentioned you'll also receive an Apex Pack with every gained level.
Obtaining Apex Packs quickly
This is what you should focus on when it comes to collecting Apex Packs:
• Play with a Squad of three players to increase your XP Boost by 10%.
• Survive for as long as possible. You can do this by dropping further away from your enemies.
• Consider conflicts with enemy teams and handle them carefully.
Microtransactions
As with every free-to-play game that's relying on servers to let people play, Apex Legends also has put microtransactions in the game in the form of Apex Coins. Apex Coins can be bought at the in-game store for around the price of 1$/1€ per 100 coins.
A Legendary skin in the official Apex in-game store costs around 11 to 18 Dollars/Euros, meaning that you will have to buy the 2nd package that costs 20 Dollars/Euros to actually be able to purchase one of these skins that you want. The Apex Coins that you have spare can be used to buy more Apex Packs which also have a very small chance of containing a Legendary or Epic Skin in them that's normally exclusively available in the Store.
The more you spend, the more you'll get on top of the normal amount. We've done the calculations on how much more you actually get:
• 20$/€ Package: 7.5% more Apex Coins
• 40$/€ Package: 8.75% more Apex Coins
• 60$/€ Package: 11.6% more Apex Coins
• 100$/€ Package: 15% more Apex Coins
Consider for yourself what you think is right to spend in the game, just know that you'll also unlock other Skins that are purchasable with the in-game currency that you can collect from levelling up!
Items with the lock in between them mean that you'll have to buy the Skin with Apex Coins first before you can unlock the other one that you don't have to pay for afterwards.
Conclusion
That's about all we know about Apex Packs and Microtransactions in the game of Apex Legends. We'll have to see if Respawn Entertainment (the developer behind Apex Legends) is going to expand upon the in-game store and ways to buy skins.
