Positioning in Apex Legends: Everything You Need To Know

In this detailed positioning guide, we'll be covering indoor/outdoor positioning, advantages, and Legend abilities!

Positioning in Apex Legends is an important component of your playstyle. Your general movement needs to be up to standard to always have ideal conditions when a fight occurs. In this guide, we'll be focusing on positioning rather than the entirety of your movement since that would be too much to cover at once. We'll be going through indoor/outdoor positioning, advantages, and Legend abilities.

Positioning indoors

Positioning indoors is extremely important when you're relying on close-quarters combat or when you're the last member of your squad that's alive. There are a few aspects of indoor positioning that you should always keep in mind:

• Where are enemies coming from?

• At what angles is my presence visible?

• What are my escape routes?

Most buildings either have broken walls that you can shoot through or a window that acts as an extra entry/exit. Playing around this instead of going head-on against your opponents is key, as you'll be able to juke enemies that think you went in a different direction, allowing you to quickly dispose of them.

These broken walls, as shown above, are very useful for scouting around the building without actually leaving it. This is best utilized when you're in a smaller circle, later in the game. Always be aware that these are also the reason what makes these type of buildings weak, your opponents will easily destroy anyone that's inside if they have enough utility and cooperate with each other.

Upstairs is almost always the preferred spot for camping inside a compound. This is due to the fact that it's harder to reach for players that lack grenades or other types of utility. In some cases, the building has a terrace that connects to a door upstairs. Make sure that you don't position yourself anywhere near those kinds of doors!

Vision is extremely important when you're inside. When your building is being sieged, you should always focus on either the doors or the staircase since those are mandatory to actually get up close and personal with you. In our opinion, we think that the opposite side of where an enemy faces when they're scaling the stairway is an ideal position for the defending party. This is because it's the blind spot for most players that run straight up the stairwell.

If you're in the middle of a disadvantageous siege, you should try to get outside as quickly as possible. Except for Bloodhound, it's hard to track if a player is actually crouching on the roof when you're standing inside of that same building.

Some extra tips for those scenarios where you happen to find yourself inside of a building:

• Charging a weapon with a Precision Choke will immediately give away your position due to the noise it makes.

• Play around pillars/poles. It'll disorient your opponent if they're not used to it.

• If you're down or need to heal quickly, try to block the door that the chasing opponent is trying to come through. They'll be forced to use a grenade or most likely Melee attack the door twice, after the second Melee attack animation they'll be stuck in the animation for a split-second allowing you to attack!

Positioning Outdoors

Ah, the great outdoors. Positioning from here on out will be very different as you'll have to deal with less cover (most of the time) and more options. Let's focus on the most important aspects of outdoor positioning first:

• If enemies approach me, do they have the high ground?

• What types of weapons do I use?

• What are my options for cover and escape routes?

High ground is always very important when it comes to shooters in general. In Apex Legends, you'll be able to escape a lot faster just by positioning yourself on the high ground. There are two scenarios that can unfold:

Scenario 1: Enemies try to assault you from lower ground. As you get hit, you can quickly stop peeking and heal yourself up to full.

Scenario 2: Your high ground gets contested. If you've determined that you can't win the fight, try to slide off the high ground and either continue jumping forward or use other objects as cover.

Located in between Bunker and Bridges, this spot is one of the strongest tactical locations in the game. Not only do you have the high ground, there's also only one easy way up. If you're peeking and get hit, crouch backwards so that the enemy can't see you to heal quickly.

The type of weapons that you use determines where you should actually relocate yourself. In the case of long-range weapons, try to find a place where you at least have two or more rocks/trees to hide behind but the rest of the terrain around you needs to be open. If you're in the lucky situation that the enemies need to come to you, they'll stand no chance in an open field.

If you prefer to play with weapons most effective on close to medium range, try to stay near mountain ranges if there are no buildings that you can occupy. You can find some of our favorite outdoor locations for close-quarter combat in the images below.

Three locations that are surrounded by mountain ranges, all three of them being within 200 meters distance from each other. On the most northern locations, east of Cascades, you can hop onto the high ground and jump down on your enemies which will be forced to participate in close-quarter combat.

Market is one of the ideal locations on the map for close-quarters combat, you can position yourself on the roof or next to one of the many cave entrances. So many chokepoints almost completely negates the effect of long-range weapons.

Other good places include:

• Swamps

• The Pit

• Northern half-circle mountain range at Skulltown

Legend Abilities

There are a few abilities in Apex Legends that allow you to reposition yourself quite quickly, we've listed them right here for you and how you could use them to your own advantage:

• Grappling Hook (Pathfinder)

Grappling Hook allows you to scale heights with ease but does so at the cost of leaving your teammates behind. Use this for positioning if you're the sniper on your team or if you're trying to scout for enemies.

• Zipline (Pathfinder)

The best repositioning tool in the game if you're not getting shot at, you can transport your whole team to a higher altitude on the map. Be careful that enemies can use it against you if you decide to leave your position and chase a different squad.

• Dimensional Rift (Wraith)

An extremely useful repositioning tool, you can surprise enemies by placing your portal behind cover when you're flanking. You can also use it as an escape route right after you've respawned an ally at a respawn beacon.

• Launch Pad (Octane)

One of the less useful repositioning tools, but still a good option for a fast character. For example, if you're being chased from Caverns towards Market, you can place a Jump Pad and quickly jump on top of the roof to gain the high ground. This can turn the tides of your battle!

Conclusion

That about sums it up for all the intel we have on positioning for now. We'll make sure to update this topic whenever there's more that we can talk about. For more great Apex Legends content, stay tuned with Dignitas!
