Effective Team Comps for Capture the Point Mode

An in depth look at an insanely good and effective team composition for capture the point style maps.

In Overwatch, team composition is vital to success. There are no items or augments to your characters, it's all about making sure your composition fits the needs of the current situation. What you see in the character is what you get at face. On Capture the Point-style maps that don't involve a payload, remaining one hero isn't that bad of a choice. There is one team comp that shines for Capture the Point-style game modes because it covers most of the needs a team comp has really well. This team comp is 2 Lucios, 2 Winstons, and 2 Tracers. The overall aim of this composition is mobility and zone control, which are the 2 biggest things needed for a Capture the Point-style of game.

The Basics

This comp consists of 3 of the most mobile heroes in the game, so they are hard to pin down and keep aim on. Lucio with his speed boost aura and ability to skate on walls, Winston with his Jump Pack, which is a rather large leap that covers lots of ground, and Tracer, who is the queen of mobility with 3 Blinks as well as her Rewind. Capture the Point game modes are about getting to the point fast and effectively. Not only do these heroes offer some of the fastest mobility in the game, they also offer the exact tools needed to defend a point and assault a point as needed. As seen in the competitive match above, Game 5 is Control on Lijiang tower. This exact team comp is used in the first 2 rounds by both teams. It is not until the third round, where a more assault and damage oriented comp may work better, that a team switches and, by the end of the round, Cloud 9 ends back up back on the 2 Lucio, 2 Winston, and 2 Tracer comp.

Execution

Lucio is a top tier stand and hold it hero, with his area of effect constant heal. He keeps his teammates healthy without the need to stop doing damage, which is pretty important for holding and assaulting a point. His ultimate, which gives your team a massive shield in an area that covers most of capture points fully, shines when defending the point and can help with an assault of the point if your team is coordinated enough to mob it as a single unit. Winston has a barrier that defends on all sides and helps the team be protected with no need for that defense to be precise. It's also the largest barrier available, allowing it to cover a fairly large area on most capture points. His ultimate is great for defense and offense. It gives him a chunk of health, powers up his melee attack and gives him more spammability on his Jump Pack.

Tracer is zone control in the form of being a nuisance and dealing damage. She weaves in and out of the control point shooting whatever enemies she sees. Her ultimate is an AoE explosion that can wreak havoc when the enemy team is going to concentrate most of its forces in one area. The composition is great for trying to keep overtime going as well, due to the insane mobility of the comp and the ability for tracer to quickly pop in on a point and pop out. This comp is known for creating Capture the Point games that go on quite longer than expected. One last note about the comp is that Lucio's alternate fire and Winston's ultimate melee attacks both knock people back. Knocking people back can buy crucial seconds when defending or assaulting a point. Also, a lot of point control maps have holes. Lijiang Tower, in particular. Having a knock back to push someone down a hole is a great way to instantly kill someone.

Conclusion

The comp is not without its flaws, though the flaws are not that major. It's overall damage output is a bit low. Winston is one of the lowest damage tanks. Lucio is a healer. He is probably one of the most damaging healers, but he's still primarily a healer. The key damage is all on Tracer, who is rather squishy. The comp revolves around solid play on the Tracers, as Winston's and Lucio's roles aren't as hard to pull off. The most offensively skilled players on the team should be your Tracers. Another flaw of the team comp is your team has to have the utmost coordination to make it work. Due to the overall lower damage and the need for Tracer to be doing a brunt of the damage, the comp requires acting as a one unit as much as possible. One last note is to always keep in mind that Overwatch is a game about adaptation. This is a really good comp for point capture but don't be scared to change your hero if you feel the need arises.
