Snaking Your Way to Victory, a Guide on Going Prone

Snakes are one of the most hated types of players in PUBG, but how do you pull it off?

There are a lot of players in PUBG and we despise different types of them. The most unpopular ones are "Sneks", "Bridge Campers", and "Edge Campers" with the "Bridge Campers" and "Sneks" taking the cake for being some of the most annoying enemies to deal with due to their playstyle being very obnoxious as you can't avoid them and step right into their line of sight. You can be "that guy" as well, so let's get on the way to becoming the "Snek"!

Choosing a Location

Choosing your spot is important, as your gear and weapons should at least blend in a little. Wheat fields and tall grass are the first spots that come to mind but when you have spots you can lay prone against, like the concrete platforms that support the water towers in Erangel, you're mostly invisible and can't be shot from two sides if you move around a corner once you've been shot. It's also difficult to get pushed since you can crawl to a different position and surprise the enemy.

On Miramar, going prone is definitely more difficult than on Erangel and I would recommend only going prone in the tall grass fields (of which there aren't many on Miramar to begin with) or the tall brown rocks that are located on the hills, because if other players have the high ground they'll most likely spot you within twenty seconds. The only other option there is for going prone at Miramar is laying between piles of garbage bags with some darker-coloured gear.

When to go Prone

There are different scenarios as to when you should go prone so there are also multiple answers.

When you're getting shot at by an enemy, it's a very natural reaction to do what you think is right as soon as possible, but do not go prone in open fields or with the enemy having the high ground advantage since it'll just slow down your escape and cost you more resources as you take more damage. Rather, go prone if you have the high ground and quickly switch back to standing up to surprise your enemy since he temporarily loses vision of you. In my experience, the enemies' reaction to me going prone even if they're relatively close to me is that they'll reload their gun and so they will not even get the chance to shoot back.

Most professional players only go prone when they're holding an angle or they're at a man disadvantage facing 3 or 4 enemies and only having 2 left alive in their own squad. It's hard to grab a win from a prone position but letting enemies fight it out first can increase your chances of winning!

What to Do When You Prone

Going prone may be boring and will take some time before you can reap the results from it, but you can also be productive!

When I prone, I first position myself to have the best angle through the grass and go through my inventory to throw out rubbish and plan out rotation routes that enemies may take to shoot them at the chokepoint that they'll have to pass through.

Later in the game, near the top 15 to top 20, you should make yourself as invisible as possible. Remove your backpack and all of the weapons that you don't have equipped to blend in more with the terrain you're currently crawling on.

Enemy Spotted, What Now?

You've just spotted an enemy that just ran past you at a distance not farther than 30 meters, what's the best choice now?

In this case, they're quite close so just stay still and choose the right moment to shoot, but don't go into a crouching/standing position! Even though you're behind the target, the small amount of noise you make can really catch their attention and they may react by immediately shooting you while you're stuck in the animation of standing up.

It's also easier to control your recoil while prone, so you should only stand up or crouch if you've lost vision of your enemy.

If the enemy you spotted is quite far away, it is almost always a better choice to ignore the opponent or stand up to get a better angle on them instead of lying prone.

Conclusion

The art of going prone requires both patience and attention. This may not be your preferred playstyle but you should really use it in situations where you need to survive for as long as possible or when trying to ambush enemy players to improve your chances later in the game. Don't prone too much. Let it be a healthy part of your playstyle and use it when it's your best option. Otherwise, just let it be. As an ending note, you can still shoot mid-animation from standing up to going prone, but not the other way around. Good luck snaking your way up to the top!
