Exploring the Utility Mages in Smite
Mages are the most diverse class in Smite. All Mages are focused on dealing damage, but each sub-class has a different way of dishing out the punishment. Classic mages deal all their damage in one combo or in a short period of time, giving rise to the name of Burst Mage. Some Mages are tanky and wade through fights as Battle Mages. Others deal high sustained damage and have kits revolving around basic attacks, giving them the moniker of Magical Hunters. There are also mages that have kits based around control or healing called Utility Mages. This article will cover the Utility Mages of Smite.
The premier Utility Mages are Isis and Janus, who have ways of controlling fights and the terrain of battle. Healers also have great utility. The Mage Healers in Smite are Aphrodite, Chang’e, Hel, and Ra. They bring the power of team sustain, which can change the outcome of fights and games.
Isis
Isis is the god most people picture when thinking about Smite’s utility Mages and she has been a staple of the game for years. She can do high damage, but much of it is conditional and is a reward for properly using her utility. Isis’ kit is designed around supporting her team and controlling the enemy team. The Goddess of Magic has access to several abilities that alter the course of a battle.
Isis has 2 non-ultimate damaging abilities. Wing Gust is just a lane clear ability. Isis’ utility starts with her Spirit Ball ability. It is one of the few ranged stuns in the game and it can be used to initiate a team fight, peel for an ally, or pick off low-health targets fleeing from a fight.
Dispel Magic is an underrated ability and a large part of the utility of Isis. The ability debuffs all enemies in an area, silencing and slowing them for up to 2.5 seconds. This ability also shreds a percentage of all targets’ magical protection and gives the total amount shredded to Isis and all her allies in her passive’s radius. Dispel Magic has offensive and defensive applications. It can be used to strip the protections of a target for Isis and her team to easier kill them or to halt an assault by making Isis and her allies tankier. The spell is a unique and powerful ability.
Finally, we have the ultimate, Circle of Protection. Isis creates a large zone where allies take less damage. When the ultimate expires, either after 5 seconds or a manual detonation, the circle explodes, healing all allies inside while damage all enemies caught in it. The healing and damage dealt is based on how much damage, by either team, occurred inside the circle. Circle of Protection is a very strong ability. It provides mitigation to allies while also healing them and damaging enemies. Her ultimate is a strong ability in team fights and for securing objectives, tying together the utility aspects of Isis.
Janus
Janus is one of the most unique characters in Smite. He can be played with many possible build paths and playstyles. Even the most aggressive, damage-focused Janus has massive utility. Similarly to Isis, Janus has a simple lane clear ability and then the rest of his kit is full of utility. The power of Janus comes from his portals.
Janus’ Portal ability has many applications. It can be placed on the ground to create a zone that will banish enemies caught inside and set them up to be easily hit by other abilities. Janus can also fall through his own portal, banishing himself and allowing Janus to dodge enemy attacks. Portal can also be used on walls and map terrain. This causes a gateway to form to the other side of the wall. This portal is single-use and can be used by Janus or one of his allies to walk through the structure. The wall Portal can be used defensively, to get someone out of a bad situation, or aggressively, to allow one of your teammates to quickly join the fray.
Janus has another ability that can create portals, his ultimate, Through Space and Time. Janus fires a projectile with infinite range in a line. The projectile creates portals in walls it passes through. These portals differ from Janus’ first ability in that they can be used by all teammates, but only once per person. Through Space and Time can be used to bring a whole team into a location or just transport Janus across the map. The high damage from the projectile is the cherry on top.
Threshold is another powerful utility ability that Janus has. Janus places a line on the ground that slows enemies and causes them to take more damage from Janus. Threshold also has a passive component that increases the movement speed of all allies that pass over it or through a portal. This bonus is increased as the ability is leveled and stacks up to 2 times, which synergizes with Through Space and Time. The combination of Portals and Thresholds makes Janus a strong Utility Mage that is not only hard to lock down himself, but also makes his team slippery.
Healers
Healing is a strong utility in Smite. By having a healer, a team can outlast opponents in a fight or sustain up after an engagement and grab hold of the game. The Mage healers are Aphrodite, Chang’e, Hel and Ra.
Aphrodite, Chang’e, and Hel are similar characters in that kits are close-ranged and they excel at controlling enemies while supporting allies. They are not played often because, even though they have great healing and utility, they do are not good by themselves or in the laning phase. Ra is more of a burst mage with a heal than a dedicated healer. This makes him stronger than the other healers because he can hold his own in the early game. Ra also has the best individual heal, as it can be placed at ranged to heal teammates on the other side of a fight. These factors make Ra the best Mage Healer, even if he doesn’t have much other utility.
Conclusion
The Mage class in Smite is varied. One prominent type of Mage is the Utility Mage. These are exemplified by Janus and Isis. Healers are also a type of Utility Mage. Utility mages control fights not by damage, but by increasing the strength of allies, weakening opponents, or by altering the field of battle itself.
