Caching In at the A Bombsite - A Smoke Guide for Cache

A guide to smoking the A Bombsite of Cache in unique ways.

Pripyat, Ukraine. Once a lively city, it is now a ghost town. After the events of the Chernobyl meltdown in 1986, the residents evacuated due to the radiation. All that remains is a hidden weapons cache beneath Chernobyl. This is more than enough to attract a group of five Terrorists who attempt to blow up one of two bombsites. As always, five Counter-Terrorists must respond to thwart their efforts. This is the premise of the original version of de_cache back in 2012 as a custom map for Counter-Strike: Source. Years later, FMPONE’s most popular map has evolved quite a bit. Now flush with foliage that has grown over time, Cache is not quite the same map it once was. With the changes come new opportunities for utility lineups. We will explore some useful smokes that are sure to help you take the A Bombsite.

Smoke 1 - Catwalk

This smoke is quite useful in shutting down the Catwalk position atop the ladder. This will allow an easier cross into the bombsite from A-Main and will be especially useful to anyone coming through Squeaky. First, head towards this wall behind A-Main and jump onto the ledge I'm looking at here.

You'll want to wedge yourself all the way into this corner and crouch.

While crouching, place your crosshair on the corner of this vent. Now you can stand up, and with your crosshair aimed to the clouds, perform a simple left-click throw.

The smoke will bounce into position, fully obstructing the view of anyone on this portion of Catwalk.

After you've thrown this several times in a match, any CT who was playing on Catwalk might begin to spam through the smoke, or just move to another position entirely. Players sometimes get desperate and try to move along Catwalk to their right, through the smoke towards A-Main.

Smoke 2 - New Box/Truck Wall

This is a great smoke to shut down an AWPer from New Box. It also allows for some safety while planting in a more open location, instead of just planting Default. Similar to smokes on the older version of Cache, jump onto this electrical box in the corner outside of Squeaky. Make sure you're as far into the corner as possible.

Align your crosshair as shown with this pipe and perform a simple left-click throw.

The smoke will land in front of New Box as shown.

CTs will have no view from here and will have to consider a hasty reposition.

From this angle it is clear that the Terrorists have options with this smoke down. You might decide to plant for A-Main or even to swing towards Quad and have a teammate plant for Highway.

Smoke 3 - Cross

This is a smoke that almost everyone knows they should throw, but not all players actually know how to throw it correctly. To accurately land this smoke, stand at this pillar in A-Main.

Aim at the Shroud boxes as shown and throw the smoke as you run forward.

It will bank off and land nicely between Forklift and Red, obscuring the CTs' view from Truck and Highway. Pair this with the Catwalk smoke, and you'll be in good shape to take the Bombsite.

Smoke 4 - Mid Site

This smoke took quite a bit of testing, but I finally found a reliable and relatively easy lineup that can provide great situational utility. Locate this barrel just behind Boost.

Get stuck up between the wall of Garage and the barrel. Aim for the part of the wall where the support beam makes contact. Perform a jump-throw.

The smoke will bounce off the wall and land near the center of the site. This works very well with the New Box smoke to allow for planting in uncommon but useful locations while avoiding a Truck player. This blocks off the view much more from Highway as well. While the gap between this smoke and the back wall looks non-existent from this angle, I assure you it is somewhat sizeable. As with any A take, be sure to clear Quad before planting and take advantage of the gap whenever possible.

Being that this smoke was tossed from a good distance away from the A Bombsite, it can be used to sell a fake. Perhaps the player who throws this smoke can then be boosted into Middle and run through the Vents to the B Bombsite.

As you can see from this aerial view, these smokes are all very useful in dividing up the A Bombsite. Smokes 1 and 3 are perfect to allow a simple cross from A-Main and Squeaky into the Bombsite. Smokes 2 and 4 allow for a creative thinker to shine when it comes to a post-plant situation. Of course, not all A takes must come through A-Main. By throwing smokes 2, 3, and 4 you might find it quite easy to run from Middle and plant on the front side of Red. The Terrorists would only have to worry about the Forklift and Truck area, which both could become excellent post-plant positions along with Highway. Endless opportunities exist, and I encourage you to look for them as you try out these smokes for yourself.
