What is "tilt?"
If you don't know what the term "tilt" means in gaming, it's more than moving something into a sloped position. The word "tilt" is to describe an emotion of anger, frustration or confusion. This meaning originates from the card game, Poker. So when you hear popular players, whether it's in an eSports scene or a famous streamer, say they are "on tilt" or they are "tilting", now you know.
What does tilting have to do any type of player?
Well, this term is used quite often and it can be a problem. When player(s) are playing a casual game, ranked game or in an online tournament, tilting is something that can be identified easily based on a player's attitude or their gameplay. Identifiable symptoms are as followed: making multiple reckless plays, not remembering basic skills, saying negative things in chat and being less willing to listen to their team. Now an abundance of things can cause tilting in not only a casual scene, but in a ranked scenario as well.
A list of what can cause these things, most of the time, will revolve around the type of game being played. In the cases of an FPS, MOBA or MMOPRG, being camped by the opposing side or being killed by the same opponent multiple times can lead to someone tilting. In the terms of a fighting game, people can be irritated by being hit by the same combo or not being able to play around an ability being spammed.
Most, if not all, games usually have some little function in the game that is a fun little emote such as a dance, taunt, etc. These emotes being spammed usually show a more fun feature of the game and the player. But a majority of the time, you've most likely seen these emotes being spammed after someone kills another in a game or someone gets cocky and walks around to spam it in order to tilt someone.
So what can get a LoL player on tilt?
There's an abundance of things. The main things would be happening in-game. A teammate could be feeding or having a bad game, saying mean comments and such, trying to start an argument, etc. In terms of out of the game, there's so many other things in real life that could be causing it. They may have just gotten out of a relationship (not likely), they could be living with someone and that person is yelling at them, etc. There are just so many things that can put someone on tilt, in game or out.
So how does one get off tilt?
It really dependent on the player. There will be players that tilt constantly or for long periods of time, players that tilt when something happen but brush it off their shoulder, and players that try so hard to not tilt but just can't hold it back. So if you want to learn how to get off tilt, follow these steps!
Steps to Not Tilting or Getting Off Tilt:
- Keeping a Positive Attitude: The entire team should be keeping a positive attitude, not just a single player. If you're going to playing from behind and not surrender, this is the only thing you can do. There's no point on being negative and adding fuel to the fire.
- Understand Tilting Helps No One but the Enemy: Tilting helps absolutely no one on your team and only helps the opponent. There isn't any more to be really said.
- Remember That Everyone on the Team Is Trying Not to Tilt: The team is trying to fight the urge to tilt and wants to win the game. In order to win, understand the team and communicate.
- Figure Out What Is Causing It: Find the root of the problem. If it's play in-game, try to stop whatever is causing it. For example, if you're playing bad, just play safer and listen to the team. If it's the opponent playing differently than expected, figure out the strategy and exploit flaws.
- Utilize the Mute Function: Yeah if you didn't actually know, there is a mute function. So if a player is being irritable then open up that scoreboard and hit the mute button. If other players are affected by comments being said in-game, tell them to just use it too.
- If It's IRL, Ignore It: Something bothering you in real life rather than the game? Ignore it. Block it out of your mind and focus on the game (note: unless your house is on fire, you might want to check into that). Treat that game like it's your life. Act like it's your promo into Challenger. (If it actually is then good luck with that.)
- Take a Break and Do Something Enjoyable: If a player is continuously playing a game for a long period of time and began tilting and is just not able to do any of the other steps, stop playing and take a break. Do whatever you're interested in that doesn't aggravate you and make sure it's enjoyable.
These are the steps to getting off tilt for your average LoL players. But always remember, whether you try your luck on the Summoner's Rift or Howling Abyss, there will be players that are impossible to get off tilt. Are you playing other games that put you on tilt? Most of these steps can be used anywhere! So make sure to be safe and don't tilt so hard that you become the number one Tower of Pisa impersonator.
