Gorilla Warfare - Winston Tips and Tricks

Some tips and tricks to improve your gameplay and win more games with the mighty gorilla!

Winston, the genius gorilla from the Moon, is one of the more complex heroes to master on the Overwatch roster. Equipped with a Tesla Cannon, a Barrier Projector (which I'll be referring to as the bubble for the rest of the article), as well as a mighty leap, Winston has quite an assortment of tools that he can use, which many players can find hard to master.

That's why I'm here. Today I'll be throwing some tips and tricks together that you can use to improve and hopefully master the space gorilla.

First off, we'll just go over some general tips that you should all know before leaping onto the battlefield.

Conserving your ammunition while doing some damage.

One thing you should know if you're placed in a one on one situation is that alternating between your Tesla Cannon and your melee attack actually does more damage than just using your Tesla Cannon. So if you find yourself face to face with one of the lower health characters, be sure to alternate between electrocuting and pummeling them. Not only does it do more damage, but it also saves your ammunition, because when you punch it does not use up any of your Tesla Cannon, which can put an end to those pesky mid-battle reloads.

Primal Rage isn't an ultimate meant to get tons of kills!

I feel as if many people just don't understand that Winston's Primal Rage ultimate isn't meant to get an insane number of kills. Primal Rage is meant to be a zoning ultimate, which means that you're not meant to get a crazy number of kills. Primal Rage serves as a much better way to control the flow of the enemy team and knocking them off of objectives and the map. This is why Winston is very good on King of the Hill maps, he can use his ultimate ability to knock enemies off of the point to secure the point for his team.

Conserve your leap so you can chase down stragglers.

Holding your leap can also be very helpful in taking down enemies. For example, you're chasing a Genji down, don't use your leap to get to him! If you use your leap to reach Genji and he has his dash, he'll evade you fairly easily and you'll be without a leap to follow up on your original attack. Try and approach enemies without using your leap so you can follow them with the leap after they use their movement abilities! This is especially effective against squishy (low health) characters, such as Genji and Widowmaker.

Use your leap to get out of battles instead of starting them.

This is going to lead into my next point, which is to not use your leap to start battles, rather, use your leap to disengage from battles. Winston has evolved into a character that's meant to disrupt the enemy team, and it's hard to disrupt when you're dead because you weren't able to reach your healers in time. Similar to the earlier tip, if you're going to engage in a teamfight, don't use your leap. If you start to take a lot of damage or need to reassess the situation, you'll have your leap ready to try and escape the battle.

Try and land on low-HP enemies while leaping.

If you do decide to leap into a battle, try your best to land on low-health enemies, as Winston's leap does a little bit of damage when you land on the ground. To do even more damage, leaping on a character and punching them can prove to do enough damage to finish off some low health enemies.

Contain high-risk enemies with your bubble.

Another tip you should know is to try and drop your bubble over enemies that have high damage, such as Soldier 76. Doing this not only stops them from doing damage, but their healers can't heal through barriers. This can pull healers out of position making it easier for you and your team to take them down.

More tips for Winston's bubble!

One trick that many of you may know is that if an enemy D.Va uses her Self-Destruct ultimate ability, and Winston drops his bubble on her mech, any friendly teammates won't take any damage as long as they're not inside the bubble with the exploding mech. What you might not have known is that the bubble is effective in supressing many other enemy ultimates. You can do this with Doomfist's Meteor Strike if you place Winston's bubble in the center of his landing zone. If you place enemies in your bubble while the enemy Zenyatta is using their Transcendence outside of the bubble, the enemies inside your bubble will not receive any healing.

I hope that these tips that I've given you help you improve your Winston gameplay as much as possible! As always, thanks for reading and have some fun on the battlefield!
