How to counter Evelynn

Evelynn has risen up recently. We can see her more often in competitive scene as well as in Solo Queue.

This season is full of changes to the jungle, the jungle items, nerfs and buffs to the champions that are played in the jungle. Besides all champions, Evelynn did get some love and got buffed two patches in row, 5.6 and 5.7. Ever since, we can see that she is played more and more in Solo Queue, and on competitive stage as well.

What makes her so strong is her invisibility. That makes her one of the most dangerous champions on the rift, because a simple Stealth Ward does not give you information about possible ganks, as it does against non-stealth chamions. Playing against Evelynn is not easy, but here are few tips that can help you:

1. Vision wards

The fact that every player on the team is limited to only one Vision Ward placed, makes some people think that it won't help. But it does! Playing against stealth champions (especially Evelynn) requires a lot of teamwork and investment from each player on the team.

In the laning phase, be sure that you have placed Vision Wards on the entrances to your lane. There are many routes that Evelynn can use to approach any lane, and you cannot put Vision Wards on all of them. But, it is always better to have one entrance secured with Vision Ward than none.

When there is objective that you and your team are preparing to take (ex. Dragon, Baron Nashor), be sure that your team has two or three Vision Wards placed in the river. Overall vision around the objective is really important, but it will not be enough against Evelynn. For example, if your team if going for drake, put two or three Vision Wards down in the river, and you will be safe from unexpected five-man Agony's Embrace.

However, this does not mean that if there is Evelynn in the enemy team she will not engage, but it denies the factor of surprise that Evelynn brings to the table.

2. Play defensive

Evelynn brings a lot of early pressure on the map, and her targets are usually lanes where her enemy has overextended. Her advantage is the burst damage she provides early, but she has no CC before level 6. So, if you are playing champion with an escape tool (ex. LeBlanc, Lissandra), and the enemy laner does not have CC, it is not necessary to hug your turret because they do not have CC to lock you down.

On the other hand, if you are laning against a champion with CC (ex. Maokai top, Leona bottom lane), then the best way to counter Evelynn is to stay defensive as much as possible, and not overextend. This does not mean that you will not get ganked, but it will force Evelynn and her teammates to dive under your turret.

3. Put wards on Evelynn's jungle camps

This is definitely the best way to counter Evelynn, but it is pretty risky and requires a lot of resources. Because Evelynn loses her invisibility when she is in combat, doing a camp that is warded by your team can provide you information about her position on the map. It is one thing to ward her jungle camps, but that will be worthless if your team does not use that information correctly.

For example, if you spot Evelynn going to get the Gromp, it is likely that she will show herself on mid or top lane after that. That means that if you are playing in mid or top lane you should be prepared for her gank and stay defensive. At the same time, if you are playing as AD Carry or Support and your lane is stronger than theirs, you can feel free to engage them without the possibility of surprise by invisible an Evelynn that waits for you to engage and use that window for a 2v3 turnaround.

If you spot Evelynn clearing the bottom part of her map, there are few things that your team can use. Your Jungler can gank top if he is in the top part of the map, without fear of countergank. If he's in his bottom part of the jungle, with the knowledge that Evelynn is also in the bottom part, can choose to gank either mid or bot lane, but he should be cautious, because Evelynn can show at any moment. You mid laner should be more careful as well, whereas the top laner can freely push.

Doing this task successfully is not easy, because you may be caught in the enemy jungle trying to ward Evelynn's jungle camps. Whenever going to ward any of her camps, make yourself sure that all the enemies are in their original lane, so you do not get caught by multiple enemies.

Conclusion

Playing against Evelynn is not easy, and it requires a lot of resources spent to deny her huge lane presence. The whole team should be equally commited in shutting Evelynn down. If you are playing as a Jungler, buying a Vision Ward + 2 Stealth Wards instead of Long Sword and placing them correcty is a really good trade. The best way to counter Evelynn is to stay defensive, ward some of her jungle camps and use the information your team gain correctly. If you are successful in doing all these tasks, it should help to not have a bad time against Evelynn, the invisible champion that brings so much lane presence to the table.
