Valve finally dropped the update we were waiting for, and it was a new game mode - Danger Zone (a Battle Royale). This is much different to any other battle royales we have seen by any other developers and is a breath of fresh air for CS:GO. In solo games you will have 15 enemies to deal with and in duo and trio games there will be 18 players total in the lobby.
In this article, I will be summarising what I feel is the best way to play the game from my experience so far and also what you need to know before you decide to drop in to this strange new world.
Dropping
Unlike Fortnite and PUBG, there is no bus/plane for you to drop into the world from. Instead, we have a system like in Ring of Elyseum or H1Z1 where you choose a quadrant to drop into and you parachute down into the quadrant you choose and have little control over the direction of your parachute. Once you load into a lobby, you will have to wait for all of the players to load in before you can choose where to drop. On the drop screen, you can see where everyone else is dropping so you know whether you will be forced into an early fight, or if you will be able to loot before you have to try and take a fight. You can also see where your team has dropped so, if you're not a premade, you can drop with your teammates without having to communicate with them, which can be especially useful when there are language barriers.
Early game Looting
An average Danger Zone game only lasts 10 minutes, so you need to be quick in looting if you want to have any chance to win. The looting system in Danger Zone is incredibly different from any other Battle Royale on the market currently. Instead of looting guns, you loot money, ammo and C4.
Money
Money is used to purchase weaponry, grenades, medi shots and much more from the buy menu (which you open with your typical buy button). Instead of a gun magically appearing in your inventory like in normal CS, a drone flies to your location and drops off your weapon, or utility, to you. There is a risk involved here, which is that enemies can track your drops and you may end up revealing your location to any enemies. To avoid this, I would recommend that you try to get as much money as possible early game so that you can get a gun delivered to you when it is likely that enemies haven't been able to rotate to your position yet. You can, of course, use this to your advantage and track enemy drones so that you can take out the enemy or even steal their gun.
C4
Unlike in bomb defusal game modes, you don't use C4 to blow up a bombsite but instead to blow up a safe, which is full of money. Naturally, a C4 explosion is loud so you need to attempt to blow a safe when you know that there are no enemies near you or blow a safe and be prepared for a fight quickly. You can, of course, survey the area using your tablet so, if you spot an enemy nearby, it is probably wise to not blow the safe and instead take the fight.
Weaponry
In Danger Zone, we see all of the old favourites such as the M4A4, AWP and P250 just in the cover photo on the blog announcing the update. We also see a whole host of new weapons introduced to us for this game mode only such as: an axe, hammer and remote explosives. Only time will tell whether or not these are influential to fights in Danger Zone and if they are actually introduced into the older game modes (although we can presume they won't). Like in the normal game, you have to buy your weaponry, but this time with a twist. As aforementioned, you can buy guns from the tablet, however the prices are hiked up and considerably higher than their normal price. Due to this, I would suggest that you should try and take out a player with an expensive weapon using a pistol, which there are an abundance of around the island, or try to steal a player's weapon from their drone.
You should try and play Danger Zone like you would in any normal comp and you can transfer most of your knowledge of the guns over to this new battle royale game mode. For instance, it is common sense that if you have a Mac-10 or pistol and your enemy has an AWP there is no point in trying to engage them at a long distance as they will take you out before you have a chance to retaliate. Ideally, I would advise getting a rifle early game (if you are a rifler) or an AWP if you're a sniper and just carry over your knowledge of Counter-Strike and try to outposition your enemy, take clean shots and get frags. It is also important to note that you start with 120 HP, so you can survive a chest shot from an AWP at long distances and will have to double headshot an enemy without head armour with most pistols.
Tablets
The tablet is the most interesting part of this game mode to me and is something that we haven't seen in any other battle royales, and I will be interested in seeing how it works and how it changes the meta in Danger Zone. All you need to know about the tablet is that it is one of the best bits of gear you have to assure you win most of your encounters. It shows the trail that any nearby enemies have taken and shows the location of enemies within a certain region. You are also able to track the 'Para Drop' which works similarly to the supply drops in both Fortnite and PUBG and contains some of the best guns in CS:GO, and it is quite often a worthwhile risk to try and get it. With the tablet, you are also able to see where the zone is going so that you can avoid dying to the zone, or getting caught out on the other side of the map and dying before you can use any of your weapons. The tablet is also where you order in any weapons and where you track the enemies' drones. Lastly, you can upgrade your drone so that the image is clearer and you can also see a wider area of the map.
Extras in this update
With this update, we also got a brand-new case - the creatively named 'Danger Zone case' with a pink variant for the MP5. This case also introduces the long-awaited AK-47 Asiimov and has the same knives as in the Horizon Case.
Also, all players with a Prime account are eligible to recieve a souvenir MP5 - Lab Rats as a thank you for using their Prime service.
Lastly, something that wasn't mentioned in the blog, was the 'Loyalty Badge'. This covert badge is absolutely stunning and I recieved one when I first logged in but I am unsure of the circumstances needed to obtain it.
Thank you for reading this article, and I wish you all the best in your Danger Zone games.
