An in depth look at a very non-meta pick, Miss Fortune support. Does she live up to the hype or not? Lets find out!
What a roller coaster the 2016 League of Legends World Championship has been. The games were exciting, and players everywhere got to see what the highest levels of League of Legends looks like. Of the many insane games we got to see, one of the most talked about was in the semi-finals between SKT and ROX Tigers. This match up for many is what should have been the finals. Getting to watch the LCK 2016 champions play against 2-time World Champions SKT T1 and the "Unkillable Demon King" Faker, was a real treat. However, aside from the god tier gameplay, players got to see something we rarely get to enjoy. Crazy pocket, exact opposite of meta picks. In this case, Miss Fortune support, piloted by ROX GorillA.
ROX Tigers saw so much success with the Miss Fortune support pick that SKT T1 ultimately had to sacrifice a ban slot for the pick. But if my time playing League of Legends has taught me anything, pros can get away with playing whatever they want because they're pros. What works for them doesn't necessarily work for platinum elo and lower. A lot of low elo players oftentimes see a pro playing something and automatically assume it's good. But if you decide to try and be like ROX GorillA, you have to understand that support Miss Fortune is not played like Miss Fortune ADC, has a unique build path, and a very unique playstyle. Let's examine support Miss Fortune's pros, cons, build path, and how she stacks up against the meta.
Build Path
The starting item that support Miss Fortune wants to get is a Spellthief's Edge. While this might seem counter intuitive since Miss Fortune is normally an AD character, she has some decent AP scalings on her "Make It Rain" ability. Also, triggering Spellthief's is incredibly easy with "Make It Rain", so you quickly gain a large amount of gold from Tribute. Since we're playing her as a support, we'll upgrade into Eye of the Watchers for vision. Mid-game is where Miss Fortune really shines. Ideally what you'd like to buy in the early to mid-game are a Black Cleaver and Mortal Reminder. Black Cleaver synergizes incredibly well with Miss Fortune's ultimate. Using her ultimate ability very quickly applies full stacks of armor reduction from Black Cleaver and gives a strong boost in damage to your AD. Since you're a second pseudo-ADC, you also serve to be a heal reduction bot. Most ADCs aim to build Lord Dominik's Regard to optimize damage, but since your goal is to just harass, support Miss Fortune can rush an early Executioner's Calling for heal champs like Vladimir, Cassiopeia, Soraka, Swain, and Dr. Mundo. Into late game, you want to build a Liandry's Torment. The extra AP scales incredibly well with "Make It Rain" and the active slow on it procs the additional burn damage on slowed targets from Liandry's Torment.

Skill Priority
At level 1 take E, then take W. At level 3, I like taking a second level in E to maximize damage and help win lane phase, then take Q. After getting R at 6, prioritize R, then E, then Q, then W
Pros
Having now played against and as Miss Fortune support, I can safely say she is one of the most annoying bully supports in the game at the moment. "Make It Rain" is on such a short cooldown that she can spam it, especially when she gets mana regen. Not only can she use it to poke you out of lane and to get free damage, she can use it as a zoning tool to push you off wave or use it to slow you if a gank is coming in. Miss Fortune support is also very good at wave clear/pushing up the wave. Miss Fortune has the ability to help push wave to tower from a comfortably safe distance, meaning that you and your ADC can have full control of the wave.
Once Miss Fortune gets enough free Tribute gold and gets a Black Cleaver, both her and her ADC get a huge power spike in raw damage. Because of the armor reduction ability on Black Cleaver and the way Miss Fortune's ultimate works, she can almost instantly apply full stacks of armor penetration on an enemy while your ADC auto attacks them into oblivion. Mind you this works on multiple targets at once since Miss Fortune's ultimate works in a cone shaped area of effect. Couple this with an ADC with Runaan's Hurricane or an AD Bruiser with Ravenous Hydra, and the damage multiplication begins to get silly.
PENTAKILLLLLLLLLLLLL!!!!
Lastly, if we learned anything from Worlds, Miss Fortune is just a straight up hard counter to Zyra support. Her "Make It Rain" ability clears Zyra's plant turrets, and they also give her a free target to "Love Tap". Do you know how tilting it is to get "Love Tap" crit from your own plant spawn as a Zyra? Very tilting.
Cons
Miss Fortune has no peel and in a teamfight, aside from ridiculous damage (see above gif), she's actually useless. If you have a Miss Fortune support on your team, pray to the Riot gods that the enemy team doesn't have any assassins on it. Having two squishy ADCs in bot lane, with at least one that's immobile, usually screams "free double kill down bot". Also, because of her need for an item or two to get going in the mid-game, if she loses the laning phase, she is legitimately useless for the rest of the game. In the late game, support Miss Fortune falls off enormously, so if the game doesn't end relatively early, she can begin to struggle. In order to exploit her power spike in the mid-game, it's best to run a team comp that can play around her and play to her strengths. While very easy to assemble a team comp around her in dynamic queue, if you're in solo queue, it can be difficult to get Miss Fortune support to mesh well with the rest of the team comp. Also, Miss Fortune fits the bully ranged support meta right now. However, she is incredibly vulnerable to any tanky support with a hook (Blitzcrank et al.). At Worlds, support Nautilus, Blitzcrank, and Thresh were hardly seen so it was safe, but at lower elos where Blitzcrank runs rampant, be wary of picking her in the blind as a support.
Miss Fortune support, although a very odd pick for the role, can be incredibly fun. Her long rage harass, slow, and ultimate/Black Cleaver synergy makes her a force to be reckoned with. Coupled with ADCs who have hard CC like Jhin, Ashe, and Varus, there's almost assuredly 100-0 potential at level 6. However, her lack of peel, CC, squishy frame, and lack of late game relevance make her not exactly appropriate for every game. I feel as though Miss Fortune could definitely be played well as a support, but this doesn't mean that she should be. After ROX Gorilla's performance on the champ in the support role, Miss Fortune's win rate went from 54% to 48% almost overnight.
If you plan on playing Miss Fortune support, practice her out before taking her into ranked games. She has a very particular playstyle as a support, and can't be put into any team comp and be expected to perform well. Only pick Miss Fortune into teams where her kit makes sense. Hopefully this guide has given you some insight on Miss Fortune support if you plan on trying her out on the rift. I wholeheartedly love seeing weird off meta picks being played, and I hope to see Miss Fortune support being played to her full potential!
