Taking a look at Virtus.pro's de_mirage B fake Strategy used in the Dreamhack Winter semi-finals against Fnatic.
During the semi-finals of Dreamhack Winter 2015, team Virtus.pro managed to win a round on the Terrorist side using an amazing Mirage B fake strategy that got them to map point against Fnatic. In this guide we are going to take an in-depth look at the strategy and how to execute it. This strategy does require some coordination and practice with a team, so it is advisable to do a practice run first before using it in a live game.

What to Buy
At the start of the round Virtus.pro had enough money to buy fully. To execute the strategy you must have at least 3 full sets of grenades. A full set means 2 flashes, a smoke and a Molotov or HE grenade. You need these grenades to make your fake on B believable. If you don’t use enough grenades the enemy can easily see through your fake and it will not force a rotation from the CT’s. You could attempt this strategy on an eco round, but keep in mind that you will spend more money than you would on a normal eco round and you will probably have less grenades to use.
The Set-Up
When the round starts, three Terrorist players make their way towards the B site and wait outside B Apartments. The other two Terrorists go towards the A site and wait outside A Main and Palace for possible CT pushes. While the A players wait, the B players set up their smokes for the B fake. Once everyone is ready, someone can make the call on when to execute. When Virtus.pro executed this strategy, they threw their smokes at around 1:25 (you can do this a bit earlier or later depending on the team you are playing against and your economic situation).
In Virtus.pro’s strategy Pasha, Neo and Snax were the ones who went towards the B site. There they waited for the two A players, in this case Taz and Byali, to setup for a possible CT A push. Since some of Virtus.pro’s players didn’t have that much money, only the B players could buy fully, while the A players only had a flash, a HE grenade and two Molotovs to defend the A site in an after-plant situation.
The execution
When the call is made, the players outside B throw their smokes in to the B site. The smokes used in Virtus.pro’s strategy are for Van, Bench and one that was presumably for Site but failed. As a team you can decide what smokes are best to use.
After throwing the smokes they throw multiple flashes in the B site. This is to make the CT’s really think that you are hitting the B site. After that, one player goes back to T spawn to regroup with the A players, while another creeps through underpass towards mid. This is to cut off any rotators and possibly grab an easy kill on an unsuspecting CT. Once the bomb is planted this player can move towards Connector and defend the bomb from there.
The third player pushes into B on his own to make the CT’s think it’s a B push. This player needs to make a lot of noise and keep the CT’s on the B site busy. He doesn’t need to make frags, just keep the CT’s mindful that there is still a player that can push B. It is also important that this players stays alive, if he dies the CT’s will realize he was on his own causing them to see through the fake earlier.
While this is all happening the two A players push onto the A site from Palace. Hopefully the A site can be taken without too much resistance. When they have planted the bomb the CT’s will realize that they have been tricked. This will cause a big rotation towards the A site, but the CT’s are probably spread out. This will make for some easy one-on-one duels. The player who rushed the B site now has to push through onto the B site and backstab the CT’s trying to retake the A site. And after a couple of easy kills the round should be won.
Try this strategy out with your team and see what happens, it could be that the other team doesn’t rotate that heavily so it’s not a guaranteed success. But if you get this strategy just right it can be super effective. Good luck!
