How to Prepare for Ranked Games

I talk about how you can win more ranked games by just preparing the right way.

The greatest achievement in League of Legends is to get to Challenger. To do that you need to win a lot of ranked games. On the contrary of what many people believe, it is actually possible to climb from low elo to Challenger. It isn't an easy task though. If you want to do it you will need to perform at your absolute best and that is what I'm going to help you with.

One of the more important things to know is that you should never start a game while tilted. By tilted, I mean that maybe you're on a losing streak or you might just have played a game where one of your teammates just sat there and flamed you all game. Why is this important you ask? Well, when you're tilted (in many cases) you will just do anything to win, even if the plays are desperate like going in 1v3. You might think that if something does go wrong, that it can't be your fault or that when something does go wrong there is no coming back. If you've just lost 6 games in a row and then you die early in your next game, you often start thinking that it's the game's fault, that it is impossible to win, or that there is something wrong with you. If you go into a game tilted you will basically have a really bad mindset.

So yes, it's very important not to be on tilt when playing. Many people know this though, but still can't win. While skill is one of the bigger parts of succeeding in ranked games, concentration is another thing that many people don’t think is that important but is. Concentration is the ability to focus the mind on one thing and only that thing. For example, you don't start thinking about your surroundings while in an important teamfight. When you concentrate, you will get much better at things like winning an important 50/50 Smite, landing skillshots and CSing. As we all know these are key parts of winning your ranked games. So if you want to do all the things I mentioned well, you need to concentrate. Luckily, I have some tips on how to do that.

It’s actually easier than you might think. Sometimes it’s hard to know whether you are fully focused on the game, but if you prepare in the right way you will concentrate easier. Your mind won’t wander off as easily if you just have your set-up the same way each game. You should keep your chair the same length away from your desk, your screen should have the same brightness, and, if you have two screens, you should have the same tabs open on your second screen as you usually do. Scientific American has proven keeping your surroundings the same way to make you concentrate better. Another thing that has been proven to help you concentrate is your music. Many gamers listen to "gaming music", which is fine since it often gets you in "the zone". A type of music that may help you concentrate even better is classical music. It has been proven to help your brain focus on whatever you are doing. The last tip that I have is to set aside some time later to think about your worries. It can be just little things that pop into your head like I need to clean or that you have a hard test coming up. As I said earlier concentration is the ability to focus your mind on one thing. If things other than League pop into your head, you will start thinking about them instead of LoL. So if your mind wanders off, you can just tell yourself that you decided before that you were going to worry about that later.

So now you know that you have to concentrate and how to do it. Of course, there are other things that could help you win games that you actually should win based on your skill level.

One of them is getting your hands ready to click precisely and at the right time. You may need to Flash away from an ability, make a precise Smite or get your ability combo to work exactly as you want it to. There are two great ways to make sure you will do that before a game. One is to make sure your hands are warm. Having warm hands means being able to move your fingers quickly, making your hands react the way you want and not fumbling as much. Your muscles just react faster when they are warm. Many pros in different eSports have handwarmers that they use, but a usual gamer might not want to invest in something like that. A good way for a normal gamer to warm up is to play a warm up game against bots. If bots aren't your ideal setting, maybe you can practice your combos in the practice tool or play some internet game in which you use your fingers a lot.

Now that I have talked about what to do before game I think it’s time to talk a bit about what to do in-game. I think the biggest reason many people stop concentrating on the game is because of the chat. While the chat is great for communicating with your teammates, it can sometimes make you tilt off the face of the Earth. Just constantly having people complaining about stuff in the chat will either make you mad or make you start writing back. Obviously this isn’t every game, but as an experienced LoL player, I do have to say that it happens in many games. From my experience, I’ve come to know that you should almost never write back. Doing that will many times just feed the trolls and make them write more. So then what should you do?

Well, there is always the option to just write “/mute all” in chat. Sure that will kind of fix the problem, but the trolls will keep writing so the others in your team will still have to hear it. Also, it will be a lot harder to communicate. I think that a good way to make them stop and to make you concentrate better is to just ignore them and start writing normal callouts. By doing that, the agitators may get bored of complaining and once in a while it will even turn around. They will actually start writing good callouts themselves. Instead of letting chat become a distraction, use it to instead make your whole team focus on the game. That’s better, isn’t it?

As a conclusion, I think that you can win some games a lot easier by just doing simple stuff and keeping focused on the game.
