Interview with shoutcaster Panky: "we really need someone new to shift the meta"

Panky, Absolute Legends' shoutcaster of League of Legends, took a moment to talk to us.

Christopher 'Panky' Pankhurst is a shoutcaster of Absolute Legends for League of Legends. His shoutcasts are very cool to watch and I strongly recommend you to do so. <!--[if gte mso 9]><xml> Normal 0 21 false false false PT X-NONE X-NONE MicrosoftInternetExplorer4 </xml><![endif]--><!--[if gte mso 9]><xml> </xml><![endif]--><!--[if gte mso 10]> <style> /* Style Definitions */ table.MsoNormalTable {mso-style-name:"Table Normal"; mso-tstyle-rowband-size:0; mso-tstyle-colband-size:0; mso-style-noshow:yes; mso-style-priority:99; mso-style-qformat:yes; mso-style-parent:""; mso-padding-alt:0cm 5.4pt 0cm 5.4pt; mso-para-margin-top:0cm; mso-para-margin-right:0cm; mso-para-margin-bottom:10.0pt; mso-para-margin-left:0cm; line-height:115%; mso-pagination:widow-orphan; font-size:11.0pt; font-family:"Calibri","sans-serif"; mso-ascii-font-family:Calibri; mso-ascii-theme-font:minor-latin; mso-fareast-font-family:"Times New Roman"; mso-fareast-theme-font:minor-fareast; mso-hansi-font-family:Calibri; mso-hansi-theme-font:minor-latin; mso-bidi-font-family:"Times New Roman"; mso-bidi-theme-font:minor-bidi;} </style> He has been gaining a lot of popularity from websites like reddit that seem to love him! I also recommend you to follow him on twitter at www.twitter.com/ALPanky and also like him on facebook at www.facebook.com/Panky.lol.

In this interview he talks about how he got picked for shoutcasting LoL and also he discusses a little about the current competitive scene. Make sure you keep checking his shoutcasts and you keep reading our articles!

Thanks a lot for the interview, how is your social life aside from shoutcasting LoL?

Panky: Right now, it is slower than I'd like but we are right in the middle of my Uni assesment period, but most of my friends realize that this is more than just sitting in my room playing games and see it as a real job now.

How did you become a shoutcaster for League of Legends? Have you had any kind of experience in the past?

Panky: I started out casting SC2 but as I got bored with the game and started playing more and more league with my friends I looked into the possibility of casting this. As there was no proper replay system or observer mode when I started this was hard but I practiced talking to myself while watching streams.

Then once observer mode was released I started working with the CSL and their tournaments for some real game experience, before finally talking to a couple of the current CLG.eu members about sitting in their scrim sessions. They agreed as long as I didn't stream to steal their viewers, I could record them and upload to Youtube. Then when Wetdream announced he was looking for casters I sent him one of my recordings and he liked it! That got me to hear.

What do you think makes a good shoutcaster?

Panky: A good voice is a great place to start, if you are hard to listen to it doesn't matter what you are saying people won't want to listen. An acceptable knowledge of the game is a must, even if its not to a 2400 ELO level. Confidence with what you know, do not try and make it out like you know more than you actually do. A strong grasp of the language you are casting in, getting stuck on words is never a good thing when you are trying to talk as fast as you need to be in a game.

What do you think of the top teams at the moment? What team do you think people should look out in the future?

Panky: I think the teams at the moment, at least in Europe, have such a good knowledge of each others strategies and tactics that we really need someone new to shift the meta. When it comes to teams to keep an eye on, Teamless (Kottenx, Althor, Metalx, Tabzz, Loordn) are certainly the guys to watch.

Is there any shoucaster that you dream of one day shoutcasting with but you never had the chance?

Panky: I still look forward to the day I get to meet Day[9] but the chances of acctually casting with him are rather slim, for obvious reasons.

What was the best game you ever shoutcasted, if any?

Panky: Best games... That’s hard because each one is so good for its own reasons, but the Lower bracket final from Gamers Assembly between CLG.eu and AL is definitely a game I am not going to forget for quite some time. (Screenshot of the endgame of this third game of this Best of 3 Match is below)

Is it your dream to one day shoutcast for Riot instead of AL?

Panky: I wouldn't say dream, but I don't think there is a League player out there who doesn't hope they can work for a company as cool as Riot Games. Working in such a friendly environment with a community we all love would be a dream for people in any profession.

When do you think this League of Legends' worldwide excitement will stop?

Panky: I don't see it stopping anytime soon because of the constant input from Riot and a community that is not only really well invested and included but also growing by the day.

Will you keep saying "very, very" a lot while shoutcasting?!

Panky: Hopefully not, it’s one of the things I hate most about my own casting. When I get tired it becomes really obvious because I start falling back on a term which I would never use in normal conversation.

Where do you see yourself in 10 years?

Panky: I want to be casting League fulltime and earning enough to live comfortably. Hopefully the scene will be going strong enough to support that, if not I still want to be working in eSports helping future generations to get the same level of excitement we all currently know and love.

Are there any shoutouts you would like to say or anyone you would like to thank?

Panky: I need to thank Wetdream and the whole AL organization, if you asked me at Christmas if I thought I would be casting League at this level by April, I would have laughed. They have worked so hard to support me and promote me. Finally our sponsors over at TwitchTV and SpecialTech.
