Mastering the Zen Touch in Rocket League with Bora

The Zen Touch is a highly advanced move in Rocket League that is based on absorbing high-speed ball hits in order to maintain control in the air. Bora helps us describe how to pull off a Zen Touch, why it is useful in game situations, and when it should be used.

Rocket League professionals are always pushing the game forward, raising the skill ceiling of the game even higher. Players like Zen are always coming up with new mechanics in the game that are redefining the skill level of the game. The latest from Zen, known as the “Zen Touch”, is one of the most advanced techniques we have witnessed in the game. So, what exactly is the Zen Touch? Why is it so effective? And how can we start applying it in our own game?

To break it down, we spoke with Dignitas pro Bora “Bora” Sari about the mechanic, its impact, and how players can start practicing it.

Why Should I Learn the Zen Touch?

As I mentioned in the introduction, ball control is a key factor for your success in Rocket League. The more control you have over the ball, the more shots you'll have, which in turn means more goals. The Zen Touch is all about control. There are some games where it feels like every clear is from one side to the other, neither team really has possession of the ball. The Zen Touch can help you turn a defensive possession into an offensive one. Not only that, some of the principles involved in the Zen Touch can help you better understand other mechanics. Ground dribbles, air dribbles, and flicks all use some of the same principles.

You want to use a Zen touch in a few specific situations. Most commonly, it’s when no one is challenging you and the ball is coming at you very quickly, off a pinch or a 50, and the only realistic way to control it is with a Zen touch. If you don’t, the ball will bounce too far away and likely hand possession over to your opponents. It’s also important to make sure you have space because without it, there’s no real benefit to going for the mechanic.

Additionally, improved ball control makes you far more unpredictable. When you’re able to take a soft touch instead of chasing down a heavy one, you open up far more options in the air. Defenders can’t easily read whether you’re going for a fake, a pass, or a shot. On the flip side, a heavy touch forces you to use extra boost just to catch up to the ball. That often leads to rushed, predictable plays, either giving defenders an easy challenge or leaving you without enough boost to execute anything effective once you reach it.

How Do I Pull Off the Zen Touch?

What makes the Zen touch so impressive is the level of control it provides in the air. Typically, when a player goes for an aerial, the focus is on making solid contact, either to shoot accurately or to challenge an opponent’s air dribble.

Instead of simply redirecting the ball, you absorb the pace of a boom from the opponent and keep it close, setting yourself up for a follow-up air dribble or double tap on the other end.

The Zen touch is so impressive because so much of Rocket League comes down to that first touch, the one that sets up full control of the ball. It allows you to stay close and do almost anything you want with the play. That initial touch is crucial for setting up your next move, and the Zen touch executes it perfectly. With a heavy touch, it’s much harder to recover, and opponents can challenge you much more easily.

What is the best way to successfully execute this move? The move that we're attempting to accomplish by "catching" the ball on the hood of your car is to soften the impact enough to allow it to stay close to your car instead of bouncing away towards your opponent. This will allow for a soft touch and help you transition directly into an air dribble.

If you do not cleanly catch the ball, you may very well end up having a heavy touch that will allow the other team to react and run you down before you are able to make a play. The move itself carries a high-risk factor, but if you are able to time and position yourself correctly, then you can completely juke out your opponents on this touch.

When you’re air rolling, you want the ball to hit the back of your car near the windshield. The key is to be air rolling as the ball makes contact, which helps absorb its momentum. Just before impact, you air roll back slightly so the ball meets that part of your car. It’s an extremely difficult mechanic to execute, and right now there isn’t anyone in the game who can do it consistently.

Common Mistakes

As Bora has previously stated, this mechanic is very difficult to perform, but there are some common mistakes players make while trying to perform it. If you can identify these mistakes in their infancy, you can rectify any mistakes fairly quickly and improve your game exponentially.

The first of these common mistakes is trying to force the mechanic. Depending on the game situation in which you find yourself, you may not be able to use the Zen touch, so trying to force this into a situation where you aren’t able to use it is usually a loss of possession. This applies as well to other mechanics of the game and not just the Zen touch. Therefore, your goal is to read the play and work within the confines of that play rather than to force a play that is not there.

The next common mistake is catching the ball at the wrong angle. The Zen touch requires precise car control and positioning. If the ball makes contact on the wrong part of your car, it will either result in a heavy touch that forces you to chase it down or send the ball off at an awkward angle with no follow-up.

The biggest mistakes are the hardest to notice, such as being slightly off with your air roll. You have to catch the ball perfectly on the hood of your car, so even a small error in air roll can send the ball flying in the wrong direction. Another common issue is making contact with the wrong part of the car. Some players attempt the touch but end up hitting it with the roof, which provides no control at all.

The key is developing the ability to approach the ball at the correct angle so that it lands cleanly on the hood, effectively “sticking” to your car and setting up the aformentioned controlled play.

How to Practice the Zen Touch?

While it is an incredibly difficult skill to master, the Zen touch can significantly impact both individual games and a player’s overall development if learned effectively. This level of aerial control allows players to shift momentum instantly, converting defense into offense within seconds.

There are several good training packs available if you search for them online. One option is ‘Zen Touch Practice’ (4EF7-8B9C-2495-9D16), though there are many others that focus on similar concepts. You can also create your own practice scenarios by sending the ball toward yourself to simulate real in-game situations.
