New Season, New You: How to Improve Your Climb on the Ranked Ladder

A look into some small things players can do to make their climb easier

As the seasons come and go, there will always be players that are disappointed with their final rank. Despite all the games they put into the game, they were unable to reach their desired rank despite the struggle to slowly climb. While the climb may seem easy for some players, most players find the climb a complete struggle and battle all the way through. Through this article, some simple changes to how you climb will be discussed. By the end, players will hopefully find some changes they can implement to make their climb easier and speed up the climb to their goal.

Stick to a role

A common mistake players make while climbing is that they continuously switch roles as they go along due to either not doing well in the role or simply just losing too much. However, it’s likely a better investment to simply stick with a role you do well with as proper knowledge in how to play a certain role will automatically give you a small advantage against your opponent. Along with that, by sticking with one main role, you’ll be able to easily determine any mistakes you make and improve as you’ll be able to compare two different games to see how you improved and what you still need to work on.

Find the champions that work for you

A common mistake most players make is that they force themselves onto a meta champion despite lacking the understanding on how to properly use them. This naturally gives that player a disadvantage as their unfamiliarity with the champion prevents them from using the champion to the full potential. Additionally, by playing a champion that you understand, you’ll be able to play out the laning phase perfectly regardless of your opponent’s champion, this will allow you to be relevant throughout the game as you’ll be able to play within the limits of the champion based on the matchup and therefore keep up in resources throughout the game.

Work with your teammates through the whole game

It may be called solo queue, but that doesn’t mean you can win a game alone. At its core, no matter how you may look at it, League of Legends is still a game that involves five players versus five other players. Because of this, along with the continuous push towards teamplay by Riot, it’s impossible these days to win a game all on your own. You need your teammates to cooperate and they need you to do the same. In order to win, players need to put their egos aside and work with their team to win, or they can keep fighting and lose the game instead.

Accept defeat

Let’s face it, you’re not going to win them all. No matter how good you are, it’s impossible to go undefeated. Yet a common trend seen among players is their tendency to tilt due to losing a game. To fix this, players need to accept that out of all the games they play they’ll win around a third of these games without having any control over the results (ex: game becomes a 5 vs 4, teammate carries the game completely, etc.) and lose a third of these games without having any control (ex: teammate disconnects, teammate intentionally feeds, etc.) so in reality you’ll only have control over the results of a third of all games you play. By accepting this reality, you’ll prevent tilt, play better, and work better with your teammates.

Take breaks

Most players will try to fit in as many ranked games as possible throughout a day. However, in the long run, this kind of climbing is likely detrimental to the player’s goal instead of helpful. What players should do is take breaks after a few games to prevent tilt and fatigue. Therefore, it’s important for players to determine when they’re close to tilting or simply tiring out a bit. By taking breaks, players are able to come back refreshed and completely determined to continue instead of the possibility of slowly tilting as each game progresses and your play becoming sloppier as well. So, to improve players need to just accept that sometimes, breaks are needed.

Conclusion

Most players usually have what it takes to reach their goal by the end of the season. But some players will struggle due to some small things. For these players, there’s usually just one small thing preventing them from climbing with ease. However, once they’re able to get past that one small hurdle, the climb becomes just as easy as it would be for anyone else. Of course, you’ll still have some rough games that makes the climb seem impossible, but you’ll get past it and continue to eventually reach your goal. So queue up, get in there, and good luck on your climb this season.
