A Guide on Defending B Site on Inferno Like GeT_RiGhT

GeT_RiGhT gives some tips on how to improve your CT side on B Inferno.

Every player has their favorite positions to defend on each map. But even if you prefer said spots, you might not know how to use what’s around you to the best of its possibilities. With that in mind, I’ve had a chat with Christopher “GeT_RiGhT” Alesund to know what some of his favorite positions on several maps are and ask him what’s the best way to defend them.

This will be the first part of a series of articles - this one will be focused on Inferno, one of the most played maps of the poll. One important aspect to have in mind is that his favorite positions might not be exactly the ones he plays during team play with Dignitas.

“I don’t play my favorite positions on every map if you ask me, but at the same time, you can't be satisfied with all the positions you're getting. You have to do your part and help the team. In the end, everybody is not going to get their favorite positions. But in the end, I think we have a pretty good understanding of what we want to do and what we want to aim for, it's all good.

It's frustrating from time to time, but then at the same time it's a team game and you have to look forward to it, to become better in that position.”

When asked about his favorite positions to defend on the map, GeT_RiGhT quickly answered the B bombsite. Although being a rather hard bombsite to enter due to the existing chokepoint and hard to flank due to the necessity of having to go all the way around CT spawn, it can also be hard for the CTs to defend if they do not know what they’re doing.

There are two main ways of defending the B bombsite - you can try to get control of Banana early round or just defend on the site and give Banana control to your opponents. You can also try to retake Banana mid-round, but that’s a whole other story.

“As an anchor, you need to be learning more and more about how to stop the pushes and get at least one or two kills before your teammates come to help and essentially retake the bombsite. And of course, the way you decide to play on B depends on the team you're playing against and how they approach the Terrorist side.

Inferno is quite a difficult map nowadays, as the Ts punish the CTs quite a lot, that's why it has come to a point where teams stack more on A than B. But you should be taking Banana control early with 2 or 3 players and then let your AWPer be there, or you have one guy just jump-spotting on the wall there to try and get information before the push starts.”

Let’s say you try to get Banana control early-round - how should you approach it?

When deciding to take Banana control early round, you should also decide if you’re using 2 or 3 players. If you decide to use 2 players, you have several options - you can bring 2 Incendiaries and use them on top and bottom Banana. If they’re rushing, by the moment they get close to you, they’ll be heavily tagged by the fire; or they could just stop and wait for them to pass. If that’s the case, you can then stack the HE grenade on Tree, since that’s a common spot for the players to wait for the fire to pass.

But let’s say either you or your teammate has an AWP and wants to do an early peek on Car. You can, and should, throw a Flashbang above the roof in a way that your teammate is free to peek on Car or Wall without getting blinded, while everyone else that’s going up Banana needs to smile for the photo being taken.

After that initial control, you have two options: either you stay up there and defend from there, or you can try to smoke the lower part of Banana and get all of it. Like GeT_RiGhT said, it’s rather common for players to get this control and then just rotate one player to A - either Library or Arches - so that as soon as the B player gets in trouble, they can rotate fast and help.

“I think the best setup is to always have Banana control, I think that helps and opens up the defense for yourself and for your team a lot more, but I know nowadays that the meta now involves the Terrorists not throwing that many grenades in Banana. So, if you try to take Banana, they can easily play faster to A, so it's a little bit 50-50 regarding that.

I personally enjoy taking Banana control and I think that's how you win the map as a CT, but as I said, Terrorist now generally only throw a Molotov to Car, sometimes a Flashbang, just to make the CTs uncomfortable. It's hard to take the battle there when there's Smokes and Molotovs there already, so you really need to go with a mindset of controlling Banana whatever it takes.”

Just like GeT_RiGhT said, if taking Banana control with 3 players early round, you need to make sure your opponents are not pushing on A fast, as that can make for an easy take on A. If that happens, your players need to be ready with Molotovs on Middle, Flashbangs to delay and even Smokes to make the opponents slow the pace.

Taking Banana with 3 players takes a lot of responsibility since they can attack fast A, they throw Smokes, Flashbangs, and all of a sudden it's 2 against 5 on that side of the map. You need to make sure you understand how your opponents are playing the match.”

In the image above, you can see some of the most common positions to defend B on site (purple), the positions GeT_RiGhT referred when taking early Banana control (blue), and the positions the players from B should rotate after getting that same control (orange). You can also find both Incendiaries and the Flashbang you should throw when taking that early control as referred to in the article.

Another thing you should do if you're serious about improving is to watch some demos of professional teams and see how they defend B. Remember that the meta is constantly changing, so avoid watching demos/matches that are more than 1 year old. The recent ESL One Cologne tournament has some very interesting demos that deserve to be studied!
