Overcoming the Tilted Mindset

Tips for relieving frustration and converting wins. And we're not talking about muting text chat!

Many players can all come to the general consensus that "tilting," which is usually spawned from poor teammates, is the reason why they are dropping those juicy ranked points. Very seldom are sheer outplays and a higher level of skill the causes of losses. This is mainly because players seem to find it easier to blame others instead of themselves, which is true! I'm a victim of this same critique. Getting past the tilt is a very simple but effective way to gain more wins in Rocket League. So, here's how we can try and move away from this mindset and towards a healthier one. Hopefully this one comes with more wins in ranked, eh? This guide will focus on the 2v2 and 3v3 playlists.

Recognize what exactly went wrong

This step will come as you gain more experience in the game. When you get scored on, it's most likely for a reason. Maybe your team gave the opposing side too much room to work with in the midfield and it led to an onslaught of offensive pressure. Maybe someone on your team didn't rotate quite correctly and ended up in the wrong place at the wrong time. No matter how simple or complex the mistake was, it's important to at least find out what that mistake was so that you can work on fixing it up. If you're noticing that no one on your team has boost, then make that extra step to steal boost pads in front of your net. This way, you'll have more power in clearing an off shot on your net or rotating faster onto offense after a clear.

To build on this, it might be a good idea to communicate with your team in the team text chat. Remember, the end goal here should be constructive and help improve a certain area of play. So instead of saying something like, "Our clears are absolute trash," try something more positive like, "We should start looking for each other when transitioning from defense to offense." Keep it short and simple, and don't type during the game. More likely than not, their response will be something along the lines of "Stop typing instead of playing." So, keep that team chat friendly and well timed!

Try to move past mistakes

Especially in Rocket League, it's easy to get hung up on minor errors that really have little to no effect on the overall outcome of the match. For example, if your teammate totally cuts you off on defense and leaves you with little boost while they go up for a challenge, you could get totally frustrated at the time and start to panic. Believe me, sitting in net with no boost is one of the scariest places to be in the game. The trick here is to try and keep your head out of that mindset of blaming your teammates. Instead, think about how you're going to get yourself out of this mess. In this example, you can collect boost pads in front of the net and wait for the oncoming shot or slowly creep out of net and try and challenge the ball earlier, or even simply call out "Need boost!" in quick chat.

When playing on defense, these three yellow boosts should be your best friend. The golden ones are also useful, but put you somewhat out of position and can result in conceding a goal.

What's important is that you move on from whatever your teammate did and instead focus on what's happening now. If your mind is caught up on what happened 15 or 20 seconds ago, there is little room for you to think about the play that's happening in front of you. And this is where the score difference will "snowball," which is when one team goes on a complete offensive tear. Focusing on the play in the present will allow you to make the best decisions you can and will likely result in goals!

Leave previous games where they belong

This tip is extremely important in having more wins under your belt of experience. It's too easy in a game like Rocket League for you to stay caught up in what happened two games ago. You might say things like "I've been getting really bad teammates today" or "I keep getting put in the worst positions which is costing us goals." Remember that Rocket League is a very momentum-based game. It's the very reason that the term "reverse sweep" comes out in the Rocket League professional scene, as teams gain more and more momentum that will lead them to an unlikely victory. Momentum is a double-edged sword and if it builds up negatively, it will cost you many games. Keep your head in the current game and try and make the most of what you have.

Know when to take a step back

Perhaps the hardest tip to accept here is to just take a break. If you're following all of the tips previously and still aren't getting any wins, then it might be time to stop playing and remove yourself from what's causing this frustration. Losing streaks can be especially brutal to your mentality going into future matches and to your overall attitude for the season as a whole. One of the easiest way to rank up in this game is to simply stop playing after a loss. This way, your mind is completely fresh when you return and you can better secure more wins. Play casual, play a different game, or stepping away from a screen altogether will help relieve your mind of the stress that is affiliated with ranked and will lead to a healthier and happier mindset.

Have fun!

Rocket League is a game after all. I find that sometimes I play the best when I'm not thinking like a robot and finding the best plays. If you're listening to good music while playing, and laughing with some friends, then climbing the ranks might be a lot easier for you. Simply put, acting out of pure instinct and reactions is sometimes a better approach than thinking methodically about every decision.

To sum up, recognize and forgive the mistakes that you and your teammates make. Focus on how you can improve your game instead of blaming your teammates for their poor game. Keep your mind happy, healthy, and where it belongs and I'm sure you're going to find yourself with more victories than if you were tilted. Hopefully you gained some insight on escaping the pit of tilt from this article! Good luck out there, and I will see you all on the pitch!
