Overwatch Combo Series: D.Va & Winston

Here we'll be looking at current Overwatch Hero combos you can play currently in Overwatch.

Here we'll be looking at current Overwatch Hero combos you can play currently in Overwatch. We'll be looking at how these hero combinations have affected the present and previous metagames and how we can implement these combos and tactics into your games in the Overwatch competitive ladder.

D.Va and Winston have defined the current Overwatch metagame. Ever since the nerf to Ana and the fall of the Triple Tank Meta, dive compositions have been the best strategy. The current metagame revolves around the both tanks, D.Va and Winston, engaging together to cause as much disruption to the enemy backline while other high mobility DPS dish out the finishing blows. During the contenders’ season zero, Winston and D.Va had the highest pick rates for tanks. Here I will be discussing how Winston and D.Va work together and why it is so effective currently.

How does D.Va + Winston Work?

D.Va and Winston work together by jumping into the enemy team before they have the chance to engage with your team. Communicating with your other half is vital when playing together. Understanding when the pair wants to fight with each other and your DPS players will allow you to get the most effectiveness of the pair.

Communicate with your other half, whether it be Winston or D.Va, that you are ready to engage. The Winston player should always jump in first with the D.Va firmly behind him. D.Va should place her Defensive Matrix over Winston to protect him at all costs. Once Winston has landed and placed his Barrier Projector on the floor, this is the best time for D.Va to recharge her Defensive Matrix. Allowing her to restore her Defensive Matrix will allow you to protect the other members of your team that follow up.

Why is this so effective?

The reason this is as useful as a combo is D.Va’s Defensive Matrix. In the current metagame, there is nothing to counter it reasonably. There are Heroes such as Mei and Zarya who are the natural counter to D.va Defensive Matrix. But in the current metagame, Mei and Zarya struggle against the current fast paced DPS heroes.

D.Va’s Defensive Matrix allows her to get in the face of any hero that is hitscan or projectile. As a result, it allows D.Va to be able to protect her team against pretty much anything. In conjunction with Winston being there as a body blocker with his barrier, he can travel with D.Va at the same speed with his leap. They can also both jump on a target which is out of position by themselves to take them out.

This synergy that both D.Va and Winston have is why the current drive meta is so strong with the additional support of the fast paced DPS heroes such as Genji and Tracer. Both D.Va and Winston can cut a team in half at the right moment with the right dive which is vital in this current Overwatch metagame.

Final Thoughts

Currently, D.Va and Winston is the strongest combo in the current Overwatch patch. Duo queuing with a friend and playing just D.Va and Winston will give you the advantage when increasing your rank on the competitive ladder. Just always be wary of stray Zaryas and Meis that may appear from time to time, as you will have to rely on your teammates to deal with them.
