Overwatch Guide: Play to the Objective

Help your team achieve 'Victory!' by playing to the objective!

Each Overwatch map has a different goal, or objective, that if not played properly will likely decide the fate of your match. Team composition is important. It may not decide the match, because different compositions can be effective, but how you play that composition with the objective will. Ignoring how you should play the map and what hero to play hurts those odds since you may not gain that 'Victory' screen if you decide to play for yourself and not for your team.

Overwatch has 12 maps that fall into 4 different categories: Assault, Escort, Control, and Hybrid. Each of these 4 categories require you to play the map differently and some heroes are better suited to help the team to play the objective on certain maps. With these categories, there are 7 different ways to play the game: assault attack, assault defense, escort attack, escort defense, control attack, hybrid attack, and hybrid defense.

Assault Maps (Hanamura, Temple of Anubis, and Volskaya Industries): These maps require the attacking team to capture two points before time runs out and the defending team to stop them.

Attackers on this type of map want a team that's ideally good at pushing through choke points, therefore you want an offense heavy team. Having heroes like Torbjorn, Bastion, and Symmetra are very bad choices due to the fact major parts of their kits require them to be stationary, which means they can be left behind. Heroes like Reinhardt, Solider: 76, and Mercy are ideal because their kits allow them to push and attack on the go. Once you find the opportunity to push in, you must take it as a team before the defending team can set up again.

Defenders on this type of map want a team that's good at holding choke points. This would mean you want a more defense heavy team. Most, if not all, heroes are viable choices on defense, but heroes like Bastion, Torbjorn, and Symmetra excel because their kits provide them with abilities that are great for holding a point.

Note: Symmetra loses a little bit of value on defense once the enemy team has captured the first point since the second point is near the defending teams spawn camp. Closer spawn points make her ultimate lose value.

Escort Maps (Dorado, Watchpoint: Gidbraltar, and Route 66): These maps require the attacking team to escort a payload from Point A to Point B before the time runs out and the defending team to stop them.

Attackers on this type of map want a team that is mobile, as the payload will only move as long as someone is near it. An offensive heavy team works well. Again, heroes like Torbjorn, Bastion, and Symmetra are not ideal here due to their lack of movement. Heroes like Lucio, Solider: 76, and D.Va excel since they can get back to a payload much quicker.

Defenders on this type of map want a team that are good 'controlling' their enemies. Heroes such as Hanzo, Roadhog, and Mei are great assets because they help control enemies around the payload.

Note: Defense can also push back the payload if no one from the attacking team is near it.

Control Maps (Nepal, LiJang Tower, and Illios): These maps require both teams to try to capture and control a point until their capture percentage is at 100. It is a best of 3 series. The team that wins 2 matches wins.

Attackers on this type of map want a combination of offensive and defensive composition. Heroes such as Junkrat, Lucio, and Reaper excel on these types of maps. Heroes like Torbjorn and Symmetra may not be ideal when pushing to try to take the point, but excel once you actually control the point.

Hybrid Maps (King's Row, Numbani, and Hollywood): These maps are a hybrid of Assault and Escort maps. The attacking team must first take control of a point while the defending team is trying to stop them. Then the attacking team must escort a payload from Point A to Point B before the time runs out and the defending team must stop them.

Attackers on this type of map want a team that is good at pushing choke points and who are mobile enough to help the payload; making offensive heavy compositions ideal. Reinhardt, Mercy, and Pharah are usually good choices.

Defenders on this type of map want a team that is good at holding choke points and who are good at controlling their enemies. Therefore, a more defensive team composition would work well. Mei, Symmetra, and Widowmaker are excellent choices.

Note: You will likely see more hero swapping here due to there being two types of maps in one. Example: Symmetra is great at defending control points, but lacks mobility to properly defend against the push of a payload.

While knowing what type of map you are on can greatly help you decide what hero to choose to help your team win, it is not all that is required. Having too many people who are not ideal for playing objectives can be detrimental. Such as, three lone people trying to harass the enemy team who are away from the objective. It takes away from the amount of people you have holding the objective, as well as more of a chance your teammates will be picked off due to the enemy team acting as a group. Ideally, you would have only 1-2 people who are not actively helping capture, holding a point, pushing a point, or pushing the payload.

For those on defense it is very appealing to over extend, but you must resist the urge, especially early on. If you do over extend, and get picked off it leaves the attacking team room to push in. The attacking team could also take a flank route and backdoor you. It only takes one person to capture a point, or push a payload to win the game because you over extended. It is much better to wait at a choke point for the attacking team as a group. It makes it harder for them to pick someone off and push in.

To properly play Overwatch you must have a team that is willing to play to the objective. Otherwise, you lower your odds of winning exponentially. This isn't a team death match after all. So get out there and PLAY TO THE OBJECTIVE!!! If you have any questions, or feel this helped you please leave a comment!
