Slicing up the Top Lane: A Camille Guide
A guide on Camille, the Steel Shadow.
A guide on Camille, the Steel Shadow.
Camille is a high mobility duelist who can cut any opponent into pieces. Camille is the sharpest champion to be released in League so far. With her high mobility, she can turn any situation into her favor. She is a high damage top laner who is challenging, yet fun to play. With this guide, you’ll have the basic understanding on how to slice with the best of them.
Pros and Cons
Pros:
Cons:
Abilities
The order that you’re going to level Camille’s skills is R>Q>E>W. With most champions, maxing your ultimate when available is best. Q is Camille’s main damage ability, so maxing it second is a must. E is Camille’s gap closer, which can help you chase down or escape enemies. Lastly W is a great form of crowd control, but only one point at level 3 is needed until late game, so I recommend maxing W last.
Passive: Adaptive Defenses
Camille’s passive grants Camille a shield when she autoattacks a champion. Adaptive Defenses does have a cooldown, so you won’t be able to abuse it. The shield is equal to 20% of her maximum health. The unique trait of this passive is that the shield will either be a physical damage or magic damage shield, depending on which damage type the target has done more of during the game. A blue shield will appear for magic damage, while an orange shield will appear for physical damage.
Q: Precision Protocol
Camille’s Q is an empowered auto attack that also grants bonus movement speed. Precision Protocol can be recast within 3 seconds, with no cost. If the recast was activated at least 1.5 seconds after the initial attack, the damage will be doubled and 40-100%(based on level) will be dealt as true damage. As a duelist, this ability gives Camille quick damage for little mana. Both activations of Q will reset Camille’s autoattack timer, which is useful for last hitting. The damage on this ability cannot critically hit.
W: Tactical Sweep
Camille’s W is a cone of damage that activates after a brief delay. The cone is split into two parts, an inner and outer part. Enemies that are hit by the outer half take bonus damage and become slowed. Camille is also healed for the bonus damage done. Tactical Sweep is a great way to zone champions. Camille can move while casting, allowing Camille to reposition herself and ensure the slow/heal. This ability is great for lane sustain, since she can heal from the outer cone.
E: Hookshot/Wall Dive
Camille’s E has two casts, Hookshot and Wall Dive. The first cast, Hookshot, has Camille shoot a grappling hook in a target direction. If Camille’s hook collides with terrain, she will dash toward it and become bound to it. Once bound, Camille can activate Wall Dive. Wall Dive allows Camille to dash in a target direction. If Camille dashes toward a visible enemy champion, the range is doubled. Once Camille collides with an enemy champion or reaches the maximum distance, Camille will deal damage to all nearby enemies. If Camille collides into an enemy using Wall Dive, the enemy is stunned and Camille gains an attack speed boost. This ability allows Camille to become one of the most mobile champions in the game. Using Camille’s E is a great way to start a 1v1 with an enemy champion.
R: Hextech Ultimatum
Camille’s ultimate allows her to jump to an enemy champion, becoming untargetable during her journey. When she connects with an enemy champion, she creates a hexagonal zone around the target for 4 seconds. All other enemies will be knocked back, pushing them out of the zone. The targeted champion can move freely in the zone, but can’t escape. Within the zone, Camille’s basic attacks deal bonus magic damage. Once Camille exits the zone, Hextech Ultimatum disappears. Camille’s ultimate is like Jarvin IV’s ultimate, but better in every way. Camille’s ultimate is what truly makes her a duelist, allowing her to single out an enemy champion.
Summoner Spells
Flash is a go-to summoner spell for most champions. The ability to transport yourself a small distance might not sound great, but it could be the difference between life and death. Whether you’re flashing to secure a kill or to escape an enemy, Flash is a valuable spell.
Teleport has been the meta top lane summoner spell for ages. Crossing the map within seconds is an incredible spell for a tank or bruiser to have. A champion with Teleport can target ally minions, towers, and wards for Teleport. Teleport can help secure Dragon/Baron or turn the tables in a teamfight.
Ignite is a situational summoner spell for the top lane. Ignite deals 70-410 true damage (based on Level) over 5 seconds, applying Grievous Wounds and revealing them for the duration. As an assassin, this ability can secure a kill. While playing the tank role, Ignite will reduce enemy healing by 40%.
Exhaust is another situational summoner spell. The afflicted target will have their movement speed and attack speed reduced by 30%, armor and magic resistance reduced by 10 and their damage dealt reduced by 40% for 2.5 seconds. Once Camille is in range of an enemy target, she can disable a champion, allowing her to easily kill her target. Exhaust can also be used to escape, since it slows an enemy by 30%.
Runes and Masteries
Camille uses very standard top lane AD runes. For Camille, I recommend 9 attack damage Marks and 3 attack damage Quintessences. All of Camille’s abilities scale with AD. With both damage Quintessences and Marks, Camille will do plenty of damage early game. For Glyphs, I recommend 9 magic resist. This will help against mages in the top lane, as well as champions whose abilities scale with AP. Lastly, you’ll want to take 9 armor Seals. Armor Seals will help tank damage from enemy autoattacks and minion damage.
For runes, 18/0/12 is the best option. Vampirism is a must because it grants life steal and spell vamp, which can help you sustain in lane. With Vampirism and Tactical Sweep, you should have no problem surviving the laning phase. Fervor of Battle is your Keystone mastery and it’s ideal for Camille. As a melee champion, she gains two stacks, rather than one. With the increased damage from the stacks, Camille is a force to be reckoned with. Runic Armor works well with your healing and life steal, making you a healing monster. Finally, Fearless is a perfect mastery for Camille, since she’ll be constantly fighting enemies, allowing her to gain the armor and magic resist with ease.
Starting Items
Starting off the game with 500 gold, picking up Doran’s Blade and one Health Potion is the best option. With the health, attack damage, and life steal that Doran’s Blade offers, you can’t go wrong. One Health Potion is the only option you can make after the purchase of a Doran’s Blade. Sheen is a strong item for Camille. Sheen will activate on both activations of Precision Protocol, which will lead to tons of damage. Sheen should be built on Camille every time you play her.
End Game Items
Trinity Force is the must have item on Camille. She uses every stat this item gives, and highly benefits from the Spellblade passive.
Although Camille can use any boots, Mercury’s Treads are the best option. A fighter like Camille needs to be moving constantly and the Tenacity will help her escape crowd control faster.
Sterak’s Gage grants health and attack damage, which helps Camille survive skirmishes. The passive, Lifeline, will grant the extra attack damage that you need when in a pinch.
Ravenous Hydra is a life steal orientated item. This item can also help Camille wave clear, which is one of Camille's weaknesses.
Spirit Visage is a great defensive item that pairs well with the life steal and healing Camille does. With the magic resist given, it should help you survive against mages.
Guardian Angel is basically a reset button for fighters. Given the second chance at life, you can choose to fight or escape with Hookshot. The armor and magic resist will also round off your defensive stats.
Blade of the Ruined King is a life steal damage item that helps you shred tanks. With the active, you can slow an enemy and go all in.
Laning Phase
While in lane, Camille can pressure the enemy with her early damage output. With the double activation of Precision Protocol, you can outtrade any champion. Remember to ward often! Vision is a small price to pay for security. Tactical Sweep can help you keep enemies close with the slow, securing kills. The difference between a good Camille player and a great one is the use of Hookshot. Knowing the distance you can travel is essential for success. With the stun from Wall Dive, you can go into your ultimate and eliminate your opponent. Hookshot can also be used for tower diving, but be very careful. If you tower dive without proper vision or support, you can end up giving free kills. If Teleport is taken, you can support your team in a fight or securing a Dragon.
Teamfighting
Camille is not suited for 5v5 teamfighting. Camille’s job is to separate a target from their team and go all in on them. With your ultimate, you can knockback the rest of the enemy team from your target. Using Hookshot, you can maneuver around the enemy team, waiting for an opening. Another use of your ultimate is to target the enemy behind your true target. Doing so will knock your intended target into your team while you tank the damage from the rest of the enemy team. With Ravenous Hydra, the splash damage will be superb if you decided to fight multiple enemies at once.
Conclusion
Camille is one of the most unique champions to be released in League of Legends. Her potential is limitless and is a real threat to the top lane. With her high damage, she can duel anyone with ease. With her crowd control and sustain, she will destroy any opposing challenger. Within the early game, remember to ward your surroundings. With proper vision, you can snowball into late game and become unstoppable. Hookshot and Wall Dive will help you chase down and immobilize enemy champions. Using your ultimate on the correct target is crucial, so decide wisely. Camille will slice and dice any enemy who dares enter her territory!
