Here is your one stop Susano shop to learn how to play and build him with confidence!
Susano has always been one of my favorite gods in the game. As soon as he was released and I did a jungle practice then a few casual games I knew he was going to be at least an S tier jungler just from his abilities and versatility. Here I am going to show you how I like to build and play Susano to give you the same experiences with him that I have had!
Abilities:
Susano is an extremely versatile and fast paced god to play. Utilizing his abilities, stacking the right items, and using the correct combinations will make you a force to be reckoned with! I am going to start the guide by going over Susano's passive, abilities, and how to correctly build him.
Susano's Passive is called Gathering Storm. Each time Susano successfully deals damage to at least one enemy god with an ability, he gains a stack. At 4 stacks, his next ability within 5 seconds that hits an enemy god will deal bonus damage. Bonus Damage: 25 (+60% of your physical power). This passive is amazing for Susano, being an ability-based god, with his 1 counting as technically three abilities itself. The bonus damage coming from this passive will help you chunk down tanks and shred anyone in your path!
Susano's first ability is called Storm Kata. Susano moves thrice in quick succession. After each attack, he has up to 3s to fire the next one. First Attack: 100% Damage to all Enemies in a cone. Second Attack: 100% Damage to all Enemies in a circle. Third Attack: 50% Damage while Dashing forward. Damage per hit: 40/65/90/115/140 (+55% of your Physical Power). This is going to be your main source of ability-based damage coming from Susano. Having the ability to strike three times, dealing 100% damage to everyone in front of you, twice, with the third doing 50% damage and acting as an escape, can be extremely handy and extremely frustrating to deal with. The more you get the hang of this ability, the more you can do with it. AA canceling is an extremely useful tool with this ability. Being able to temporarily stop the ability, land an auto attack, do the second part, auto attacking, then dashing away can almost completely kill a carry.
Susano's second ability is called Wind Siphon. Susano commands the winds to blow, dealing damage in a cone in front of him. Enemies in the center of the attack are pulled towards him. Damage: 80/105/130/155/180 (60% of your Physical Power). This ability is not used too heavily for the damage aspect, but for its ability to pull enemies towards you. Once you get them dragged towards you, you can use your Storm Kata and maximize your damage output! Keep in mind that you can also pull more than one enemy towards you at a time, as long as they're in the vicinity that allows it!
Susano's third ability is called Jet Stream; Susano throws forward a gust of air which creates a whirlwind, dealing damage every .75s for 3s. He may activate this ability again to teleport to the whirlwind. If the initial gust hits an Enemy, the whirlwind surrounds and travels with them, and teleporting to the enemy reduces this cooldown to 8s. Damage per tick: 20/30/40/50/60 (30% of your Physical Power). This ability specifically can make Susano one of the most annoying gods in the game to deal with. It can be used as an engage to apply DoT damage and give him the ability to teleport to you or to run away and teleport behind you. Jet Stream is extremely good against enemies with quick escapes or teleports like Janus. After Janus portals through a wall Susano can teleport to the DoT damage from Jet-Stream. Trust me, if applied correctly, it is extremely annoying, but satisfying if you're playing him!
Susano's ultimate ability is called Typhoon. Susano summons a hurricane at his location that pulls enemies towards the center while growing to up to twice its size, increasing the damage as it grows. Upon reaching full size, the storm is launched in the direction he is facing, knocking up opponents in its path. Susano may re-activate this ability early to fire the storm at its current size for reduced damage. If fired at less than half of its maximum size, he also foregoes the knock-up. Full damage: 215/280/345/410/475 (+140% of your Physical Power). This ability can be used a few different ways, my favorite though, is to use it to engage the enemy team. It can also be used as an effective self-peel if you're being chased down. It'll knock up the enemies (as long as you turn and face them for a second) allowing you time to make a proper escape.
My favorite ability combo for Susano for a one vs. one duel is to Wind Siphon them to me, Jet Stream on to them to apply DoT damage and allow me to teleport to them, auto attack them, teleport to them, auto attack once more, than finish with Storm Kata. Using the abilities and animation canceling in this order will almost guarantee you a kill against the enemy! If that wasn't enough and they start to run, you can always use your Typhoon to finish the job!
Build:
Next we're going to talk about the optimum build for Susano. Although he can be built in several ways, all being extremely effective, I'm going to go in-depth on the power build to be able to tear down any enemy you cross paths with!
You will start with Assassin's blessing and a tier one Mace, one health pot, and one mana pot. The relic is subjective to their composition. If they have a heavy Crowd Control team with Kumbhakarna and Poseidon, Purification Beads are the most useful. If not, I really like Blink on him to increase his versatility with combinations. If you're still new and getting the hang of him, consider Purification Beads over Blink. With how much movement is already in his kit, Beads would be more useful.
Before you finish upgrading Mace into Jotunn's Wrath, you will instead go directly into Warrior's Tabi. Doing this is more cost efficient, will help you get from buff to buff quicker (+18% movement speed), and add a nice power spike (+40) to your abilities.
After you finish Warrior's Tabi, Jotunn's Wrath is the next item you will finish. Jotunn's adds a nice spike of +40 power to your abilities, gives you +150 mana, +10 penetration, and 20% cooldown reduction. These are vital to Susano, especially the early mana and cooldown reduction. Susano can starve from mana deprivation early game with the focus on his abilities, Jotunn's will help that a lot with the added mana.
Next you will work on an item called Transcendence. This is one of, if not, the most important piece to building Susano. With it's passive of adding +15 mana per stack, up to 50 stacks, than converting 3% of his mana into power, it provides a relatively quick and big power spike to Susano. It also gives you +35 power, +300 mana base, +6 MP5, and 10% cooldown reduction. All of these are extremely important to Susano. The 300 mana and cooldown reduction itself give you a huge spike and advantage against your enemy!
After Transcendence, I like to consider Hydra's Lament. Hydra's offers an extremely useful tool to Susano in it's passive, for 8s after using an ability, your next Basic Attack will deal an additional 50% damage. Abilities that function like basic attacks do not benefit from this. This item grants 2.5 MP5 per 10% of your missing Mana. With Hydra's, when you use your abilities and Animation Cancel, it adds an extra 50% power to each basic attack, which will almost guarantee your foe falls to your blade. Along with the power spike after using an ability, it offers you MP5 per 10% missing mana, which will create even more sustain for you to get an upper hand on the enemies.
When finishing Hydras, I like to go into building The Crusher. Crusher adds a few things to Susano's kit which will accelerate his damage even further including DoT damage. Altogether, this item adds +30 physical power, +20% attack speed, and +15 physical penetration. The passive, though, is where this item really comes into handy. Enemies hit by your damaging Abilities take an additional 20 Physical Damage + 15% of your Physical Power over 2s. This means with your Jet-Stream ability already adding DoT damage, Crusher will add even more for an additional 2 seconds, which could easily help secure a kill.
The last item for the build is subjective, but I usually like to go with a Spirit Robe. Susano is a very in your face, 0-100 type of god, and that type of playstyle can get you caught in a pinch. Having a defensive item that counters both magical and physical damage is optimal. Spirit Robe offers +40 physical protection, +40 magical protection, +10% cooldown reduction, and 20% crowd control reduction. Just with the base offer at 2,500 gold, Spirit Robe is an exceptional item for almost any god, especially one like Susano. Along with the base stats though, this item also has a really useful passive. You gain an additional 15% Damage Mitigation for 3s whenever you are hit with a hard Crowd Control Effect. This can only occur once every 15 seconds. So every 15 seconds, you gain additional damage mitigation if you are hit with a hard crowd control, making it so you can survive more teamfights.
Susano works well with:
Nox: Being able to use your Wind-Siphon into her silence ability, letting her root enemies more easily makes them an extremely strong combination
Aphrodite: Yes, we've all seen the Sus/Aphro memes across the board. They work extremely well together because of her ability to heal him, to knock back applying additional damage to whoever Susano is fighting, and her ultimate which makes him immune to damage while he's escaping.
Susano is weak against:
Artio: Artio can cripple Susano, making it so he can't escape as easily and can pin him down to attack herself or to let enemies attack.
Kumbhakarna: Kumba is a 100% CC god, meaning he can stun and mesmorize Susano in place. Susano's escape and movements are what make him as strong as he is.
Susano can seem extremely hard to play at first, but do not let that discourage you from giving him a chance. As soon as you have his kit down and his itemization completed, he can be one of the most fun gods to play, and one of the most annoying gods to play against! Use his abilities in your favor. Get in, kill, and get it, its what makes Susano such a fun god. Also, he has one of the most satisfying combination chains in Smite!
