Smite Assault Guide: Learning the Assault Ropes

A look into Assault and how to increase your chances at winning by mentality.

So Assault has been in the game for a long while now, and it's one of the more popular game modes. The main objectives are fairly simple, you recieve a random god in the lobby, and you're given one chance to reroll or trade with your teammates. Then you battle it out in a one laned map with your given god and take down the enemy titan. There's one more twist, though. You can not get back into the fountain to regen HP/Mana or buy stuff before you die. This is the main problem with assault and you have to play around that. It's unique in its genre of game modes and it makes every round different - and you have to adapt your playstyle differently every game as the team compositions will be different each time.

Meta:
Honestly, there is no meta in Assault. You can win with pretty much any team comp, you just have to play the fights right. There are exceptions, though. You don't need a tank, but it's never a bad thing to have one. Having 3-4 tanks is really strong, but you could always use some more damage. However, it's not your decision, you gotta play what you're given by the gods of Random Number Generator. Anyway, let's sum up the 5 classes in Smite to see how they are in Assault:

Assassins:
Might be one of the hardest classes to play in Assault, as you rely a lot on being sneaky, ganking from the side and bursting down a single target. It can be quite hard with all five players in the same lane at all times. However, they are definitely not bad in this gamemode, and some of them can turn around a game no matter how behind you are.

Some of the most dangerous assassins: Hun Batz, Bastet, Ne Zha and Mercury.

Mages:
It's no secret that mages dominate in Assault, and they are definitely the strongest class in this mode. They have great waveclear, they have a lot of poke damage. Their presence in teamfights and what they are capable of is just too strong to pass on. It is fully possible to win without a mage on your team though. I wouldn't reroll a mage, they're so valuable for your team.

The most dominant mages: Ah Puch, Janus, Isis, Vulcan, Scylla, Hel, Ra and Zeus.

Hunters:
Hunters are also one of the better roles in Assault. You want ranged gods, because it's dangerous to be close to the enemy team due to how stacked everyone is at all times. Hunters may not deal the most damage in the early stages of Assault, but as soon as they get online, you should really be careful of what they can do to turn around any teamfight.

Hunters you don't want to face: Hou Yi, Medusa, Cupid, Ah Muzen Cab, Artemis and Rama.

Warriors:
They're the tanky powerhorses of this game mode, and you would want one of these on your team as well. Not only can they handle a lot of damage, but they also deal damage like no tomorrow. They're great in the frontlines, they're great for initiating teamfight and a warrior could also outzone the enemies away from your tower if the team has died and no one else are defending the lonesome tower in the lane.

Strong warriors you want on your side: Tyr, Sun Wukong, Bellona, Chaac

Guardians:
They're pretty similar to warriors, but the guardians are magical and have more CC than most other class in the game. What makes guardians great in Assault? Well, you have the CC. And a little bit of more CC. Not only that, but they're tanky, great initiaters and good in the frontline, so having a guardian on your team would not be bad at all.

Guardians who will save your team: Kumbakharna, Athena, Khepri, Sylvanus, Ares and Xian Tian.

Item Builds:

Your builds in Assault should not be like your normal builds in any other game mode. Except from Doom Orb and Heartseeker, stacking items are disabled. You need to see the enemy team comp and build against their comp. Do they have three hunters and one warrior? You bet you should get some physical defence. Do they have one guardian and four mages? Magical defence. What about your own team comp, are you four physical gods? You should probably buy some penetration then. You can't have one build in Assault because it's impossible for that build to stay relevant in every game. You can have some core items you should get on a class though, like Spear of the Magus on mages and Titans Bane on assassins, but your build should be different for each game.

When it comes to actives, as long as you're not playing Thanatos, get Meditation. It's the best active for this gamemode, and you should buy at least tier one Meditation as your first item. If you're not playing Aphrodite, buy Salvation to help your team. Aphrodite's meditation will also go to her soulmate, and she is better off with Meditation anyway. But there's nothing wrong with buying Salvation on her as well.

Early Game:

This is one of the most important stages in Assault. You had 3000 gold to start with, you've bought your Meditation and your items, now you will all meet up in the middle of the map. The first blood is really important as you get a lot of gold for the kill, and those will come in handy when you die. If you die early, you won't have enough gold to buy a new item, so you will have to die another time to buy it later on, and that's just time wasted for yourself. So play safe, but lean on your teammates for the teamfights. Teamfights are everything in this game mode.

Mid Game:

What's important to know about the mid game is that dying to buy items will be a huge risk due to longer respawn timers, so be careful if a teamfight is breaking out. If many of your teammates die, you will probably lose one, if not both towers and maybe the phoenix as well. A Deicide in this game mode is so important when it comes to taking objectives, because you will always have your allies and enemies in the same lane for the whole game. Play safe if one of your allies already died, and if you need to buy items, wait until your allies return to lane and be alone when you die for most efficient defence on your tower.

Late Game:

Many people lose their mentality here if they're behind in gold and kills, or if you're defending your phoenix while both of the enemy towers still stand strong. Trust me on this one, the game is not over until the defeat (or victory) message pop up. One well executed teamfight and the game is back on tracks for your team. If you wipe out some of their most dangerous gods, you can easily come back into the game, and if you get a deicide at this stage, you might even win before they can respawn. Remember that you can't back to your base and regain health and mana in Assault, so constant pokes will push them back.

Mentality of Assualt:

Unfortunately, quite a few players can be negative by looking at your team composition against the enemy team composition. The game is not over at 10 just because they got "meta friendly" gods. Meta is not a topic in Assault, and you can really win with five melees against two tanks, two mages and one carry. The mentality and not fearing the enemy team composition is the key to success, but remember to respect the matchup.

The main key in assault is winning teamfights, so if you see them making some mistakes, using beads, being out of position and stuff, punish them. All poke is important in Assault. Be careful of your positioning though, after all, you don't want to get jumped by four people because you wanted one kill. Don't chase kills.

Fun Facts about Assault:

Now hopefully you know more about Assault, and you're ready to jump into the random teamfights with whatever god Smite decides to give you. However, Assault isn't just all "let's get random gods we don't want to play and make the best out of it." it's also the home and founder of "Jump party." Basically, you meet up before the game starts and the minions spawn, and jump around each other in sheer joy to have some fun before the serious business start. But be careful, there will always be some party poopers who don't want to take a part of the jumping and rather punish your carelessness.

[VVGL]: Good Luck!
And most important in this game mode,
[VVGF]: Have fun!
