The Art of the Climb: Playing the Ranked System
Let's look into the smart way to climb out of Elo Hell.
Let's look into the smart way to climb out of Elo Hell.
Climbing can be rough, but there are several things you can do to make it easier, you just have to know the ways. Using just one of these could drastically improve your LP gain.
Duo Queue
Duoing is good for multiple reasons. You know that you have at least one person you can trust with you, not to mention the synergy that can be built up over time. It's not the easiest thing to find a good person to duo queue with, but after each game you play alone, look at the person who did the best and ask yourself if you think you could work well together. If you feel you can, add them and ask them to tag along in your arduous journey through elo hell. Communication and having someone you trust along for the ride can easily net you more wins.
Knowing When to Dodge
So, dodging is something most people wouldn't consider doing or want to even, but it can be the best thing for you to do. If you can look at your team and see less than a 40 percent chance of winning, you might as well dodge. What's a few LP compared to 17+ for a loss? Depending on how long you're sesion is going to be, try and save your dodges, keep it to two in a twenty-four hour period to avoid any kind of reprucutions. Unfortunatley, this isnt viable in your series as a dodge counts as a loss. That is where duoing can help yet again. Play with someone you trust and ask them to dodge for you, if need be, in your series to keep you safe.
Finding the Right Time to Play
Depending on when you can play and where you are in the world, there are certain time of the day/week that are best for playing. If you're serious about climbing and grinding, take some time after every session to make a note of the day of the week, time of day, and your win/loss record. After two to four weeks you may start to notice a pattern forming that you can use to your advantage. Maybe 9pm on Tuesday is a great time for you where you can win, whereas 9pm on Friday is when you lose the most of any day or time. Adapt your gaming to this schedule and watch yourself start to climb.
Who to Ban Away From Your Team
In low elo there are several champions that people play that they aren't mechanically able to pull off. The power picks of each patch should always be banned first, but if you have the chance, there are several types of champions you should consider banning. Any mechanically intensive champion (Lee Sin and Vayne are good examples), any new champion for at least the first week, and any reworked champion for at least the first week of the new patch. These bans may offend some people in your lobbies, but it's better than having someone on a champion they can't pay.
Knowing Who You're Playing With and Against
There are several applications that you can download and use to see what champions your teammates are best with in each roll. Utilizing that info in champion select can save you some troubles as far as deciding where to go. In the loading screen you should utilize this time to go to several different sites to check who you're playing against as well as with. Op.gg is one of the best sites as far as stats go, others for more indepth looks are Carry.gg and LoLNexus.com. Knowing who's duoing, who can carry, or who's on their main can help not only you, but your teammates as well.
Counter Picking
Knowing champion matchups is one of the most important thing for players to know. If you know how to play most matchups, you'll be able to perform no matter the other players skill on the champion. Sites like ChampionCounter.com are extremely useful for when you're left with a lane you dont normally play versus a champion you're not used to seeing. Knowing what's strong and what's weak in a certain matchup can mean the entire laning phase. Keep in mind though, counter picking doesn't always secure a win, it simply gives an advantage. Making the counter work is up to you, your mechanics, and your overall game knowledge.
Recognizing Your Faults
The last way I'd like to discuss to improve your chances of climbing is recognizing where you need to improve. Freelo.gg will give you general idea of where you can improve and what youre doing well. There are other sites that can delve even deeper into what you do well and where your faults lie. The first key to getting better is recognizing that you aren't perfect and that there is always room to improve.
