The Importance of Line of Sight: Abilities, Auras and Ultimates
How to position yourself properly via Line of Sight
How to position yourself properly via Line of Sight
Like in most games, there are many details about Overwatch not covered in the tutorial. Fine details that can make or break a teamfight, and that will sometimes leave the player stumped. Line of Sight means when you can see the target, the target can see you and there are no obstacles between you. These are some widely as well as lesser known details about Line of Sight abilities in the game.
Mei
Mei is pretty straight forward as a hero. Point and freeze. Her ultimate Blizzard consists of her throwing her little robot on the ground, and gradually freezing all opponents within a 10-meter radius and in Line of Sight. It deals 97 damage over a course of 5 seconds, and its freezing effect stacks with Mei's Endothermic Blaster. Mei's Ice Wall does not block the effect of Blizzard.

Lúcio
Lúcio's abilities revolves around the idea of Line of Sight. His passive ability Crossfade allows him to either heal or speed boost his teammates within 30-meters and in Line of Sight. However, the effects are not immediately lost upon breaking Line of Sight but disappear after 2 seconds after being out of sight of the friendly Lúcio, who can keep track of how many teammates are affected by the number in the Crossfade bar.

Following the same standard as Crossfade, Lúcio's ult only affects his teammates in Line of Sight and gives them a shield of 500HP which deteriorates over the course of 6 seconds, fading by 100HP each second. The teammates will not lose their shield by breaking Line of Sight.
D.Va
D.Va's Self Destruct deals 1000 damage at close range and its damage falls off up to 20 meters to all enemies in Line of Sight. Shields and barriers- such as the Winston's Barrier Projector, or Reinhardt's Barrier Field will block the damage.
Zenyatta
The mostly known fact about Zenyatta's kit would be his orbs, Harmony and Discord. Placing a healing Harmony orb on a friendly target will heal 30 health per second, and will stick as long as you're in line of sight. Just as with the Lúcio's Crossfade, it not disappear immediately after breaking Line of Sight, but in the same way as Crossfade it will disappear after breaking Line of Sight for 3 seconds.
His Discord will amplify the damage on your target by 30% and disappears only when you place it on a new target, your target dies or they break Line of Sight for 3 seconds.
The lesser known fact about Zenyatta and Line of Sight is that his ult Transcendence actually follows the same principle as Mei's. Zenyatta will only heal teammates who are in Line of Sight and within his range of 10 meters, even though his ultimate visually appears like it will affect anyone in range.

Reaper
Reaper's ultimate, Death Blossom - like some of the aforementioned ultimates - is actually inaccurate in its visual range. When a Reaper uses his ultimate, the range of Death Blossom extends in a sphere with both a vertical and horizontal 8-meter radius. The damage falls off from 200 DPS at optimal range out towards the edges of his sphere. As with D.Va's Self Destruct, Death Blossom's damage is negated by broken Line of Sight but also blocked by shields and barriers.
Reinhardt
Reinhardt's ult, Earthshatter, can seem a bit inconsistent with how it behaves. Sometimes you stun the entire team, and sometimes nobody gets stunned even though you clearly hit them all. What gives? Earthshatter, like all other ults in this list, follows the basic principle of Line of Sight. When activated, Reinhardt swings his hammer into the ground and creates a cone in which every enemy in Line of Sight and not behind a barrier or shield gets stunned.
The reason his ultimate seems inconsistent is due to a few rules:
Mercy
Mercy's Resurrection does not require Line of Sight. However, her Caduceus Staff's healing or damage beam requires her to be within 15 meters of her target. Like with Zenyatta, breaking Line of Sight or stepping out of range does not instantly cancel her beam. Instead, it loses the target after 2 seconds.

Knowing about these things may not be life or death, but they will definitely assist you in clutch situations and in positioning yourself correctly. Try to keep your healer in mind! If you're a flanker who needs some heals from your Zenyatta or Ana, pop into their Line of Sight and ask for an orb. If you're a frontline DPS or tank who just needs some spammed heals, make sure your healer actually can reach you.
