The S's, A's, and B's of Jungle: Tier List for Season Nine
Here's an idea of what junglers are best suited for a newcomer.
Here's an idea of what junglers are best suited for a newcomer.
These junglers are ranked not on any personal level but rather an objective one based on three levels; Damage, Crowd Control, and Difficulty. This list is for those who want to know which champions are better than others, but more importantly which ones are better suited for their style. Higher ranks only dictate the capability of the champion to make an impact on their own. The higher the rank, the easier it is for that champion to make an impact without having to rely on others as much.
In each of these ranks, I will provide a scale for each champion's damage, control in fights, and difficulty to learn from 1-10 to get a feel of how they compare up to others. This also gives an idea of how some champions are ranked higher than others.
S Rank:
This category includes those who excel in one or two categories if not all three. These are some of the champs that have seen the most consistent success in solo queue. These are the champs that have some of the strongest control of the game if not through their damage then through their crowd control in fights. For the most part, they are all relatively easy to learn except for some champs which have a higher learning curve.
Each of these junglers also has no issue with their clears in the jungle, where they can successfully clear with minimal to no issue. This includes being able to fend off any attempts at countering from the enemy junglers. With information on the enemy, this rank can also venture into the enemy jungle with little consequence. They are overall the highest of the champion pool that can bring any struggling jungler to success.
Rek'Sai: Her damage is one of the highest and with the bonus of knock-ups, she is one of the highest in terms of rank. Her strength is actually based on the ability to see her enemy in the fog of war and make decisions based on this knowledge. Her only downside is a higher learning threshold than most of the other junglers.
Hecarim: This champion has a massive damage output and plenty of CC to boot. The strength of Hecarim lies in the ability to immediately run through the frontline and pressure the enemy carries. The control aspect of this champion is relatively high as well with his ultimate that can fear multiple people and a knockback which can set up teammates.
Jarvan IV: Now not going off pro play, in which he hasn't seen much success, Jarvan is a strong jungler worthy of an S-Rank. His damage output isn't as low as you may think, but his main strength is the CC and way to manipulate fights. With his ultimate and combos, he can leave enemies stuck in place or keep them immobilized long enough in teamfights.
A Rank:
This category is similar except the champions are less easy to learn but are still strong in another category. These champions are almost entirely fighters or assassins, which guarantees high damage output. This excludes Amumu and Skarner where their control is much stronger, but their damage takes a backseat. The strength in this category comes from the gank potential that each champion has and a chance to snowball.
Champions in this rank have minimal issue in the jungle where many can clear with relative ease. However, some of these champions do have trouble with invading enemies as their dueling power is lower in most matchups. some champs also will require practice such as Evelynn, Kha’zix, and Nocturne as they have a higher skill cap. This pool of champions is for those who are more skilled in micro choices in ganks and minor fights.
Kha'Zix: Kha has one of the highest damage outputs in the A rank category. His assassination ability can take carries out of a fight before it has even begun. This champion does lack a bit in the control category, but can still pose a high threat to carries and even just the threat can cause an issue with the enemy teams during teamfights.
Kayn: Kayn is strong but, depending on the path you choose to evolve him, he can do much more. He has a baseline A rank due to Patch 9.8 by reducing the cooldown on his E and allowing him to move through walls more often. However, his darkin Rhaast evolution is still the stronger choice when taking into account the three aspects as his hard CC, difficulty, and damage all outweigh Shadow Assassin Kayn's primary damage aspect.
Udyr: This champion is one of the most versatile on the rift. His strength is both damage and control of a fight. Where his damage may not be the highest, it is the most consistent and this can be done even while building defensively. His control isn't the best, as it is done in melee range, but it is reliable once you are able to run into the enemy and apply stuns. This champion has the power to build whatever is needed and still do well, especially when he builds defensively and is able to run in and out of fights without trouble.
Amumu: His control is one of the strongest in the game, where his stun has a low cooldown and his ultimate is a CC that can immobilize the entire enemy team if you pull it off. While this champion does have a lot of CC, his damage is nothing to laugh at as one item such as Abyssal Mask can enable him to almost solo carries at the early points in the game. As of Patch 9.8, his Bandage Toss has a much lower cooldown, meaning his gank potential and frequency has risen much higher
B Rank:
B rank is mostly a weaker pool as they are weak overall but excel in one aspect. These champions have some of the lowest difficulty to learn but their damage or control is not overly impressive. Most of these champions struggle in the jungle not with keeping healthy upon clearing but with the speed. These ones are easily the most susceptible to counter ganks and invades from the enemy jungler.
This last rank is for those who know how to control fights or be the frontline tank for teamfights. These champions are more prone to be controllers of fights and have higher gank potential. Being a more macro potential category, it is only the lowest rank due to their slow clear speed and reliance on teamwork.
Nunu: One of the oldest champions of the Rift, Nunu and Willump have seen a rework that changed their linear playstyle and made them a strong jungle force to be reckoned with. Their strength lies in the control they have in ganks and teamfights. Their ultimate and snowball both may seem hard to hit, but they are also some of the best CC in the game and also deal significant damage. His damage may not seem a lot but, with one or two items, it can cause a world of hurt to the enemy.
Lee-Sin: A high damage champion. However, this champion is one of the few champions that has the potential to set perfect gank opportunities. With his mobility and ultimate, you can serve the enemy carries on a platter to your team. You do have to practice the mechanics a bit, but he is strong early game. His later game suffers when enemies start to build defensively.
Sejuani- Sejuani has seen a rise in popularity recently with pro player Xmithie and it is primarily because of the immense amount of CC she brings to the composition. Her damage takes a step back to the three CC abilities she possesses. Her defensive builds will allow her to stunlock most carries with no trouble and control the fight in her team's favor.
Conclusion:
S-rank is a strong group of champions to learn and make a strong impact on your games. Controlling fights and controlling the objectives is the best course of action in this category. A-rank is for the fighters of solo queue who can control fights and snowball through solo strength. These champions are the ones that will overpower most situations but, it is by your pace. Lastly, B-rank is for those who enjoy working in a team environment where they excel in keeping the fights focused on them and defending the team. The champions in this rank may not be the best against the jungle but they are the best in a teamfight. Each rank has its own strength and different conditions for winning.
