The Wonky World of ADC Meta in Season 10
The ADC is in a strange place with a handful of strong champs. Let's take a look at what makes them so good.
The ADC is in a strange place with a handful of strong champs. Let's take a look at what makes them so good.
As metas go, we see either an entire role become strong or just a champion or two. In the current meta, we see something much different in the bot lane where half the Marksmen/ADC you play are actually strong while the rest are balanced making them feel as if they are underpowered. The classic marksmen/ADC I'm looking at as too strong are those that can take Press the Attack (after 3 Basic attacks you gain 40 to 180 adaptive damage and 8%-12% increased damage from all sources, all of this is based on level) like Lucian and Tristana. The outlier in this group of super-strong ADCs is Ezreal, but we will get into the why Ezreal is OP later.
Lets first take a dive into Lucian, He is a highly mobile short-range marksman that every time he uses any ability, he can basicattack twice in a row, ignoring the normal attack speed he has giving him a much larger damage output. This combined with the fact that these extra basic attacks proc press the attack twice as fast allowing for you to receive the bonus damage on the enemy champion after only two abilities with basic attacks laced in between each ability use. This gives Lucian an immediate boost above the other ADCs that benefit more from other masteries like Lethal Tempo (increases attack speed up to 110% allowing you to exceed the attack speed limit). Lucian at 3 procs of Press the Attack on a champion not only gives him a huge boost of damage but also gives his team a gigantic boost in damage because it is stated "increasing the damage they take by 8-12% from all sources" making Press the Attack too good to pass up. This combined with the current strength that BORK (Blade of the Ruined King) has with its percent max health damage gives Lucian an easy top 5 on the list of meta ADCs.
Tristana is different from Lucian as the primary source of damage isn't her basic attacks, but her E (Explosive Charge). Tristana places a bomb on a champion and can increase that bombs damage with up to 4 basic attacks. Because it is 4 basic attacks, she procs press the attack increasing damage in general which makes her bombs one-shot a lot of people early. Even late game these bombs do a lot of damage as they are just extra damage to the basic attacking you would normally do. She even has a free escape with her W (Rocket Jump) which if timed well, can allow her to move to the target location even after being CC with a root or stun.
This adds to safety but can be used best to aggressively chase champions as every time she gets a champion kill her jump cooldown is reset meaning she can keep chasing after that elusive Penta Kill. The only downside Tristana has is that she has the smallest basic attack range of any marksmen early making CS-ing harder and opens her up to enemy harassment. I only say early as every time she levels up, she gains basic attack range turning her into one of the longest ranged ADC.
Oh, Ezreal, when will you be a balanced champion again. The strength he holds is in such a strange place that he can easily be nerfed into the dirt, but for now, he stands as what I consider the strongest ADC, but I use ADC lightly here as although he basic attacks a lot, his damage mainly comes from his abilities. His Q counts as a basic attack as well as lowers all of his cooldowns (including ultimate). But the main reason he is strong is because of the items he builds. You build a Manamune and now you have extra AD and you never again have to worry about mana. Manamune is strong as it now gains its passive stacks (Gives up to 750 extra mana at which point you gain 2% of your mana as AD) with basic attacks meaning you stack it much much quicker than before. Ezreal also builds Sheen (which can build into multiple items) and Sheen is fairly strong right now as the bonus damage you get from every Q is disgusting. Finally, you build a BORK. which gives him max health damage on everything.
All these all the time, but he also can melt any champion in the game with the combined max health damage from BORK and the burst potential of Sheen. The power from these current meta Items and the fact that he has high mobility with a basically free flash makes Ezreal the current strongest ADC. To further the idea that this isn't just my personal hate for Ezreal, I looked into the pick ban rate for Ezreal in Korea (they are usually the ones creating meta) and noticed that he had a 50% pick rate which is fairly high, but I also noticed he also had around a 50% ban rate... This means Ezreal is picked or banned in nearly every single game, cementing the idea that Ezreal is currently broken in terms of general power. If you want to pick Ezreal up to play, now would be a good time to do so
I think I do need to say that just because I personally think these champions are stupid strong doesn't mean you should only play these ADC. Do these champions stand out from the rest? Sure they do. Does that mean other champions like Miss Fortune or Vayne are not playable due to the aforementioned champions' power? Not at all. If you do find that the other ADC choices aren't matching up against the meta, a current way to work around this is either building an early Executioners as that helps to stop them from healing off the face of the earth. Early game, especially with BORK, is hard to play as, if the enemy gets ahead, it's very hard to pull out of the spiral of death. The Executioner's should get you back to even ground as most of the time you lose fights bot (against a BORK champion) because they out heal you with items even if technically you do more damage.
