Top 5 Training Packs for the Consistent Player

I've put together a list of my favorite training packs to help you reach the next rank!

With the new season of Rocket League getting started and new season rewards to shoot for, I've made a list of my top 5 favorite training packs to help you get to the rank you deserve! I thought about all of the different aspects of the game I think are essential to your success on the pitch and picked the packs I run through most often to share with you guys. Training packs are important because they are a very accessible way to work on specific techniques in a much more concentrated way. For example, if you happen to be working on redirects, it may take you a match or two for one opportunity to materialize.

Instead, you could grab a training pack and run through a variety of different setups and really give your redirect game a workout in the same amount of time. In the packs I've picked, we'll focus on dribbling, air dribbling, saves, redirects, and backboard reads. All of these things are individually important to improving your game, but run through all of these regularly and you will come out a better, more well-rounded player.

The first pack we'll take a look at is the easiest in my opinion. This backboard shots pack by "Squishy" is a fairly basic introduction to backboard reads. I love this pack for a few reasons. First, it's a really great starting point for anyone who has trouble reading bounces off the walls. The ball tends to float in fairly slowly giving you enough time to line yourself up before leaping into the air for the finish. The second reason is that once you start understanding how the ball is going to bounce, you can start working on your quick aerials to get to the ball even faster.

Backboard shots can be tricky to defend, especially at lower ranks where players have yet to master proper backboard defense. Reading the bounce off the wall can really catch the defense off guard, but getting to the ball with a quick aerial can be hard to save even if the defense sees it coming. Start practicing this pack to become a better striker and start putting more goals on the board for your team!

The next pack is aimed at improving your defensive game. Made by the lovely guys at Psyonix, this pack puts your goaltending skills to the test. After running through the regular goalie training packs built into the game, I was a little bit skeptical that this pack would be much more difficult. Even if you've mastered the All-Star goalie pack, this one is humbling. These shots come in hot and give you very little time to get into position. Some of these shots still give me some trouble when I boot it up. Regardless of your current level of play, allowing fewer goals means winning more often. This pack may challenge your decision making but if you can handle this advanced goalie pack, you'll be a defensive wall on the field.

Dribbling the ball is an essential skill to have up your sleeve because it opens up new options for you on the pitch. That's why our next training pack focuses on dribbling the ball around the field. You start off carrying the ball in a straight line from one goal to the other. By the end, you'll be catching the ball on your hood and pulling off U-turns without the ball ever touching the ground! Once you've mastered the art of dribbling, you can fake out opponents, pass to a teammate, or even put a powerful shot on net.

Once the ball is on top of your car, the defense will either be forced to challenge you early or wait to see what you choose to do next. A hesitating defense means easy goals for your team so add this pack to your regular rotation and start breaking some ankles this season.

This next training pack is hands down my favorite. It's the first pack I run through when I open the game because it's super fun and it really helps you improve your car control in the air. This is the training pack for anyone wanting to work on their air dribbles. It starts with a couple of air dribbles from the ground and works into shots off the walls.

This pack can be really tough if you've never worked on air dribbling before but this is where I started when I was looking to practice and now I just do it for entertainment! Once you start getting the hang of it, you'll be impressing yourself left and right with these shots and when you start incorporating them into your online play, you'll be able to hop over defenders and put the ball in the top corner of the net every time.

Our last training pack is massive. 50 shots of pure redirecting madness. It may take a while to get through but this pack made the list because the sheer amount of meat on its bones. Out of all of the packs on this list, this one may be the most important in my opinion. Some of the shots are just ground rollers you have to tap in. Some shots, however, will just leave you scratching your head and resetting the ball a billion times. The reason I feel this pack is so important is because of the wide variety of shots it contains and the many different mechanics it forces you to use to complete it.

Air rolls are really important in this pack which is great because it's one of those mechanics that a lot of lower ranked players don't actively work on. Air rolling seems to fall somewhere between basic and advanced on the mechanics scale and I can't understate how useful it is in every online game I play. There are a few shots in this pack where starting an aerial in reverse is useful. This pack just does a stand up job of starting players in awkward positions at times and expecting you to use mechanics you may not focus on otherwise. The amount of variety you find in this pack will make you a much better striker if you put in the time to run through it regularly.

Rocket League is all about consistency. The best strikers are the ones who rarely put shots off target, not the ones that miss nine out of ten shots but make the last one look really good. I picked these training packs because these are all skills you'll need to reach that next rank. One of the coolest things about training packs is that they keep track of how many shots you nailed first try out of the total shots. Don't be discouraged if you only get one or two on your first try. Over time, these packs will get easier and easier until you're hitting these shots more often than not. Training packs are an awesome way to see your own improvement. You'll see yourself finishing packs in half the time it originally took you and you'll start using these mechanics in games without even thinking about it. I hope you guys enjoy these training packs and use them to reach that next rank. I want to see a montage of epic shots and saves you guys get from these! Until next time, keep scoring goals and making friends!
