Warming up in CSGO: a 10-minute routine

This 10-minute routine will get you warmed up and ready to frag in no time!

We've all been there. Coming home from a long day of work, you cannot wait to hop onto your computer and play some CSGO. Time is limited, so instead of warming up, you dive headfirst into a competitive match. As you engage the first enemy, you wiff every single crucial shot. Your confidence tanks, teammates get tilted, and rounds are lost. Before you know it, the game is over. What was supposed to be an exciting evening of CSGO ended up being a stressful and overall disappointing experience. Not to worry, this 10-minute warm-up routine will give you the quick fix you need!

For this routine, we will only use one map that offers an all-in-one package for all of your warm-up needs: YPRAC Bot Arena, made by yesber. It contains many useful presets which we will use throughout this routine. You can find it on the Steam workshop here.

Before we begin, there are three principles you have to keep in mind throughout this routine. First of all, always aim for headshots unless stated otherwise. Secondly, it's a good idea to take a 30-second breather between every exercise. Lastly, since every activity targets different skills, it is normal to perform a little worse in the first round of every exercise. The goal is to do a little better in every second round of each exercise. To monitor your performance, at the end of each exercise, you can see your kills-per-minute in the top left corner of the map.

If at any point during the routine you notice strain or pain in your arms, make sure to go a little slower or cut the warm-up short. Pushing yourself too hard will only hurt your performance and, more importantly, can have long-term adverse effects on your health. Remember, these exercises are to warm up, not to push yourself to the max!

Now, let’s get started! When you first load into the map, you begin on the main screen. Simply press the jump button, and you will find yourself in a circular arena with many different options to choose from. For our first exercise, however, we will use the default warm-up exercise.

To begin the warm-up, just jump onto the platform and shoot one of the bots. In this first exercise, bots will spawn randomly scattered across the map. Focus on hitting one taps and try to get into that flow of switching between targets. Once you finish, take a small break. To restart the exercise, just kill one of the bots, and the timer will start running again. This time, try to get kills a little faster and smoother than in the previous round.

Once you finish the second round, prepare for the next exercise. Walk towards the activities wall and look for the ‘random reflex’ preset. To load the preset, you just have to shoot it. By default, the amount of kills you have to get in this exercise is set to 15, but I prefer to increase the amount to 30. You can change the number of kills on the opposite side of the map. Once you are ready, jump back on the platform to start the second exercise.

In ‘random reflex,’ one bot at a time will spawn at a random height, and run back and forth. The goal of this exercise is to warm up your headshot reflex on a moving target. To optimally simulate reflex flick shots, reposition your crosshair on the middle pillar after every kill. Remember, it is perfectly normal to get kills at a much slower pace during this exercise. After another break, repeat the exercise.

Once the second round is over, go back to the activity menu and choose the ‘reflex rush’ preset. Here I also prefer to increase the number of kills to 30. In 'reflex rush', one bot at a time will spawn and start running towards you. If it gets too close, it will despawn and another will take its place. Once again, put your crosshair on the middle pillar after every kill and try to flick to the bot as fast as you can without losing accuracy. This time, you can switch between one taps, bursts, and sprays, taking into account the distance at which the bot spawns. Repeat this exercise twice, with another 30-second break in between.

Finally, jump off the platform and take a look at the gun selection part of the map. Get the AWP and repeat the previous exercise twice. Importantly, for optimal AWP warm-up, focus on precision rather than speed. If you miss a shot, let the bot despawn and try again. As you notice that you hit your shots more efficiently, speed up your flicks. Just like the previous exercise, always return your aim towards the middle pillar.

If you go through this routine every time before you play, you should notice yourself hitting more and juicier shots. While warming up might not be the most exciting part of CS, it is well worth it as it makes your in-game experience a lot more enjoyable. Who knows, you might even be the one carrying your team to victory.
