Agni – God of Fire

Agni is a long range, magical god who seems to have everything in his kit, with high burst, mobility, and crowd control. You may ask yourself who can counter such a god? Agni is mostly played in the mid lane, as that is where he shines the most, so in this guide I will cover which other mid lane gods counter him.

Poseidon.

Poseidon is a great counter to Agni mainly because of his Whirpool (3rd ability), which cripples enemies and pulls them to the center. Agni for the first few levels mainly clears the wave with his Path of Flames (3rd ability) which is a dash. Poseidon with a well placed Whirlpool can negate Agni's early clear and force him under tower.

This however becomes not as relevent after Agni hits level 5 when he can clear with Flame Wave (2nd ability) and Rain of Fire (4th ability). In the later stages of the game Poseidon remains a relevant counter to Agni, as he is able to deny him his escape and he can easily burst down Agni with Whirpool into Kraken.

Isis.

Isis counters Agni's early game by her Dispel Magic (3rd ability) which can silence Agni while he is using Path of Flames. This makes his ability go on cooldown without reaching the full dash. This is a harder play to pull off, but it works very well, since Agni stays in a bad position with his only escape down. After that, Isis may follow up with a Spirit Ball (2nd ability) and Wing Gust (1st ability) for a full burst.

Also Isis has a better early clear than Agni and she probably has the best early kill potential to shut down Agni. Her ultimate (Circle of Protection) also offers damage reduction, so it becomes harder for Agni to burst her down with Rain of Fire.

Although Agni can actually deny Isis her main clear ability - Wing gust (1st ability) by stunning her with his combo. This is actually quite hard to avoid after Agni reaches level 5. Keeping this in mind, Isis should always make sure not to use her Wing gust when Agni has his stun up.

Janus.

Janus is also a great god to counter Agni, since like Isis, he can interupt Agni's dash with his Portal (1st ability), making it go on cooldown without reaching the full distance of his dash. This is also quite difficult to pull off but it's very rewarding. Although he doesn't have that full burst potential that Isis has, you can definitely get an early kill with Janus on Agni with the help of your jungler.

Janus also has the best mobility in the game and can start ganks much quicker than Agni, influencing teamfights more.

Ra.

A much different style of counter play than the first three mid laners. Agni relies a lot on damage over time from Path of flames and Flame Wave paired with his passive to clear the lane in the early stages of the game. Ra can negate that damage over time with Solar blessing (3rd ability) by healing the minions and forcing Agni under his tower.

This kind of counter play becomes less relevent really quickly when Agni reaches level 7-8 and can almost instantly clear the wave. In the later stages of the game, if Agni didn't have the opportunity to burst down you or your teammates, Ra can heal up the damage and continue the fight.

Nox

Nox, although underplayed, is also a great counter to Agni. Mainly her counter is Siphon Darkness (3rd ability) which silences enemies in the area and explodes after a few seconds. Placed in the middle of the minion wave or even in the place where Agni is preparing to dash can really devastate Agni's early game and even grant you first blood.

Mid to late game Nox becomes a very skill based god since her combo is really hard to hit. In my personal opinion Nox is almost like Scylla with a more difficult to land combo. But in the late game her ultimate also has 30% damage reduction for 5s, which can very well influence a team fight.

So if you're looking to make your enemy Agni's game a bit harder by countering his ability to safely do damage these are the few gods you should pick.

Some honorable mentions that counter Agni throughout the game but aren't played in the mid lane.

Thor - A great jungler, who can wall off Agni denying him the ability to dash away to safety. Also his wall can interupt Agni's dash, putting his only escape on cooldown and making it easier to secure that kill.

Ares - He can cripple Agni for a very long time using Shackles (1st ability), letting his teammates to follow up and get the kill onto Agni.

Cabrakan - He has the best ability to wall off Agni from safety, his ultimate is kind of like a cone ability, which will only let Agni dash into one direction - danger.

Ymir - He can also wall off Agni in a tight spot in the jungle or simply deny him the luxury of Path of Flames by blocking the direction Agni wants to dash to.

Odin - Ring of Spears ability denies Agni any chance of escape, letting Odin's teammates to pile up and erase Agni from the game. Not even meteors from the sky can save this god of fire when the rings are up.
