Zaun Strikes Back: Warwick Rework Preview

A look into the Warwick rework currently on the PBE server, along with thoughts on his potential impact.

Rejoice League fans, 2017 has brought us the long-awaited Warwick rework. With a hyped animation with it, players are looking forward to getting their hands on his new kit and to experience what he can do firsthand.

Passive: Eternal Hunger
"Warwick's basic attacks deal [8 + 2 per level] bonus magic damage. If Warwick is below 50% health, he heals the same amount. If Warwick is below 25% health, this healing triples."

Thoughts: While Warwick will be losing out on the initial healing provided by his passive in the jungle, the increase in damage in the early stages of the game will allow Warwick to increase his overall clear time. While his damage is slightly downgraded (barely) in the later stages of the game, the healing he is able to receive is absolutely insane. As long as Warwick builds tanky after Blade of the Ruined King and another damage item (Titanic Hydra, Death’s Dance, etc.), his sustain will allow him to survive in team fights for much longer than most other champions.

Q: Jaws of the Beast
"50/60/70/80/90 Mana
6 sec Cooldown
Warwick lunges forward and bites his target.
While the key is held down, he will lock on to the target then leap behind them.
On release, deals [120% total AD] plus 6/7/8/9/10% of your target's maximum health as magic damage (applies On Hit effects).
Heal 30/40/50/60/70% of damage dealt. While locked on, Warwick is connected to the target and follows any movement they make."

Thoughts: A huge upgrade to his current Q which is a simple target and click ability. This new Q will allow Warwick the capability to chase after kills as the new Q also serves as a dash. Along with that, the damage from your Q is much higher now thanks to the 120% AD scaling combined with the percent health damage. Additionally, Warwick’s new Q allows him to have a good tool to gank with before receiving his R at level 6.

W: Blood Hunt
"70 Mana
120/105/90/75/60 sec Cooldown
Passive: Warwick gains 50/65/80/95/110% attack speed against enemies below 50% health. He also sensed low health champions globally, moving 35/40/45/50/55% faster toward them when out of combat. These bonuses are tripled against enemies below 20% health.
Active: Warwick briefly senses all enemies. The nearest sensed champion is Blood Hunted for 8 seconds.
Cast only while not in combat with a champion.
While no enemies are being hunted, Blood Hunt cools down twice as fast."

Thoughts: A nice combination of Warwick's old W and E abilities, not only does it reward Warwick even more to find low health targets, the combination of the two abilities allows Warwick to get a new ability (which we’ll get to next). Along with that, the active adds to Warwick’s new early game ganking potential as he’ll be able to receive the attack and movement speed on command.

E: Primal Howl
"40 Mana
15/14/13/12/11 sec Cooldown
Warwick gains 35/40/45/50/55% damage reduction for 2.5 seconds.
At the end of the duration, or if activated again, Warwick howls, causing all nearby enemies to flee for 1 second."

Thoughts: With the combination of his old W and E, Warwick was able to receive a new ability. This new ability is absolutely insane, it gives Warwick a nice damage reduction which will allow Warwick to have a greedier build as he now has built in tankiness. Along with that it provides Warwick with some crowd control as well with a nice 1 second fear at the end. This allows Warwick to get out from bad situations after a bad jump in with your ultimate or Q.

R: Infinite Duress
100 Mana
110/90/70 sec Cooldown
"Warwick leaps 2.5 seconds worth of movement speed in a direction, suppressing the first champion he collides with for 1.5 seconds. Deals 175/350/525 (+ 167.5 bonus AD) magic damage and applies on-hit effects 3 times.
Warwick heals for 100% of all damage he deals during Infinite Duress."

Thoughts: On paper, his new ultimate is a slight increase in damage, however the big thing here is that he now heals for 100% of the damage dealt as opposed to only gaining a 30% life steal increase. Along with that, his ultimate also received a big range increase with the tradeoff that it can now be body blocked. Because of this change, Warwick will likely have to flank with his ultimate as opposed to starting fights with it. However, the overall ability is a nice increase in damage to Warwick, he just needs to use it in a different manner.

Conclusion
The new Warwick fixes the core problem the current Warwick has which is the ganking potential before level 6. Along with that he will now have more tools at his disposal thanks to the combination of his old W and E, which also allowed him to receive a new ability. Thankfully his new ability works and synergizes well with the rest of his kit. With some slight damage buffs as well, I wouldn’t be surprised to see Warwick make an impact on pro play as well as ranked games in general.
